2 PGDip/MSc Nutritional Sciences Why study this programme at the University of Greenwich? The School of Science at the Medway Campus has an important role in helping to meet the key objectives in the university s corporate plan through its portfolio of programmes, research, consultancy and other activities in subjects allied to medicine. The MSS also seeks to play a coordinating role in forging rich partnerships between Schools, Institutes and Departments within the university in order to harness expertise and maximise the quality and enhance the effectiveness of academic provision. By developing strong partnerships with academic and servicedelivery institutions such as hospitals in the Kent and other London regions, the School seeks to widen participation and promote community links. The School has a wide-ranging expertise in developing and delivering honours degrees in life sciences (including successful undergraduate programmes in biomedical sciences and nutrition) as well as taught Masters programmes and MSc by Research degrees. The postgraduate programme in nutritional sciences (with a focus on general/clinical nutrition, public health nutrition and sports and exercise nutrition) is the latest addition to the portfolio of courses which has both a strong academic and research focus and also provides an opportunity for continuing professional development (CPD) in nutrition for individual practitioners in subjects allied to medicine. Why study with us? The School is located on the Medway Campus in the rapidly developing area of Chatham Maritime. This campus is home to three universities, making it a vibrant place to work, study and relax. There are three cafes, a pub, a sports hall and halls of residence on site. Ana active student population runs the Universities at Medway Students Association which organises a variety of sports and social activities. The Medway campus is located near the historic towns of Rochester and Chatham and is 50 minutes by train from central London.

3 What courses will you study? Full-time mode over 1 year: direct or online Physiological & Biochemical Basis of Nutrition Physical Activity and Body Composition in Health & Disease Research Methods, Biostatistics & Data Management Case Studies in Nutritional Biochemistry Specialist Option: (Public Health Nutrition; Clinical Nutrition or Sports & Exercise Nutrition) Project Title Part-time mode over 2 years Students are allowed to take at least TWO common courses in any one year and the remaining two in the second year. Students will also be expected to carry out a research project in the final year. Postgraduate Diploma Students on the full-time mode will be allowed to take all four modules without the dissertation component. For part-time students, the course will run the same as on the part-time mode for 18 months and without the dissertation component. Career opportunities The MSc in Nutritional Sciences provide a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of human nutrition and the opportunity to follow a successful career in nutrition, either in the UK or overseas. Graduates of the course are provided with the knowledge and experience necessary for engaging in, and contributing to current debates about major national, regional and global issues in nutrition. An additional research component allows the development of valuable skills for practising and interpreting nutrition research.

4 PGDip/MSc Nutritional Sciences Attendance Students will be required to demonstrate a commitment to their programme of study by regular attendance at all scheduled activities. They must also successfully complete the summative and formative assessment tasks outlined on the course before the student can pass the course and obtain the course credit points. Entry requirements Candidates are expected to hold a human nutrition degree or the life sciences BSc from a UK university or equivalent, recognised qualification from a non-uk institution or have studied human nutrition as part of their degree. Individuals with a medical qualification or a degree in nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy are also eligible to apply. Fluency in written and spoken English is a prerequisite for this course with a minimum of IELTS score of 6.5 or an equivalent TOEFL or UTESOL for students whose previous course of study was not primarily in the English Language. Minimum requirements for consideration onto the MSc and MSc by Research programme would be a good First degree equivalent of a 2:1 degree classification or above. A few places will be reserved for candidates with a 2:2 degree classification but with other evidence of good academic potential and good supporting references. Individuals wishing to study for the Certificate courses or a Postgraduate Diploma will require the equivalent of a 2:2 degree classification and evidence of good APEL / APL. An intercalated route will be offered to medical, dental pharmacy and other specialist applicants who wish to take modules of interest to them. 5 Teaching and assessment The programme is taught using a combination of activities including lectures, tutorials, nutrition seminars, case studies, and student-led presentations. The programme also has a strong practical programme combined with academic rigour. Courses are taught by lecturers who have strong research records, as well as excellent teaching experience. Exemptions from professional bodies Students who graduate with a MSc in Nutritional Sciences with specialisation in Public Health Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition or Sports & Exercise Nutrition prepares them for future registration as public health nutritionists (RPHNutr), Clinical Nutritionists (CN) or Sports & Exercise Nutritionists (SEN).
