2 In an increasingly technological world, there are great challenges and opportunities for professionals with advanced qualifications in computing. The Department of Computer Science can help prepare you for the career of your choice thanks to our wide range of taught Masters programmes and research degrees. Our courses aim to provide you with a fuller, systematic understanding of current and developing computer systems and technologies. You can also be confident that you will be taught and supervised by subject specialists in a vibrant and supportive environment. Classroom and lab-based activities, including lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical work, offer a varied and diverse range of postgraduate experiences. You will also be encouraged to attend seminars and locally held conferences, participating fully in the research culture of our Department.

3 Internationally-recognised expertise We promote and advance internationally leading research in a number of influential areas, including critical infrastructure protection, computer security, networked appliances, computer games, software engineering and computer science. Our research is co-ordinated via our PROTECT centre, with specialist labs and groups led by experts with international reputations in networking, computer games and cyber security. A supportive community We offer you a vibrant teaching and research environment, equipped with the latest facilities plus a supportive community of 1,100 undergraduates, MSc students plus more than 70 research students from over 20 countries worldwide. The Department employs over 40 highly qualified academic staff and is supported by teams of skilled technical and administrative staff. A modern computing environment In addition to University-wide IT facilities, you will have access to up-to-date specialist computing facilities within the Department itself. We have nine specialist teaching laboratories, with over 400 workstations, managed by a team of eight technical staff. We offer a range of desktop platforms from Windows to MacOS and Linux as well as mobile platforms, such as ios and Android. We also offer a cloud environment and virtualisation systems for specialist applications. We are a licensed Sony PlayStation developer and have PS4 and Vita development kits. Our research laboratories are fitted with air conditioning, ergonomic seating and category 2 lighting, plus state-of-the-art design technology for a modern computing environment. City centre facilities The Department of Computer Science is located on the 6th and 7th floors of the Byrom Street complex in LJMU s City Campus, right in the heart of Liverpool city centre. In addition to specialist computing facilities, Byrom Street has a large Starbucks café, social spaces plus high quality meeting and seminar rooms and lecture theatres. The Avril Robarts Library is open 24/7 during semesters and is also just minutes away on Tithebarn Street. Research excellence We are proud of our growing research reputation and have a long-standing history of working with local, regional and national industries through student placements, research, consultancy, short course activity and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. We have a number of collaborative partnerships both locally and internationally. The Department has a rich research base and in the latest research assessment (REF2014) 48% of our research was ranked as being internationally excellent, with 80% of our research rated as high impact in terms of reach and significance. To further advance our world leading research, we established a Research Centre for Critical Infrastructure Computer Technology and Protection (PROTECT). This centre brings together researchers from a number of areas, including computer networks, network security, computer games technology and software engineering, to address emerging research challenges associated with the protection of critical infrastructure systems.

15 Tuition Fees The following 2015/2016 full and part-time annual tuition fees should only be used as a guide. You are advised to contact LJMU for up-to-date course fees. Home/EU applicants International applicants English for Postgraduate 30 week course: 9,000 Studies courses 20 week course: 6, week course: 3,600 6 week course: 1,800 Taught postgraduate programmes Full time: 5,500 12,000 (PgCert, PgDip, LLM, MA, MSc, MRes) Part time: per credit Fees vary depending on whether you are (Masters programmes consist of studying a class or lab-based programme. 180 credits) Research degrees Full time: 3,845 11,000-12,000 MPhil/PhD Part time: 1,923 Writing up: 360 Postgraduate Loans The Government recently announced that it would be launching a new postgraduate student loan scheme from 2016 onwards. These new loans are expected to provide funding of up to 10,000 for new postgraduates under the age of 30 enrolling on taught masters degrees. Details on eligibility criteria, repayment plans and how to apply for these loans have not yet been announced but will be published on the LJMU website as soon as these details are released (ljmu.ac.uk). Alumni Award Final year undergraduates and alumni of the University are eligible to apply for a 15% reduction in their postgraduate tuition fees if they choose to progress to a higher degree programme at LJMU. PhD Scholarships Support for full-time three year studentships is available via our LJMU PhD Scholarship scheme. Studentships are available for applicants in all disciplines where excellent research is being performed. n Fully-funded three year PhD Scholarships comprise: annual fees (currently 3,845 per year), a contribution towards running costs ( 1,500 per year) plus an annual stipend ( 13,863 per year, normally awarded tax free). n Fees-only Scholarships are also available. All applications for PhD Scholarships must be submitted via your future Director of Studies. The number of Scholarships available is limited. For more details on eligibility criteria and how to apply, please contact the Graduate School: ljmu.ac.uk/rgso Please note: international, part-time and MPhil students plus those completing Professional Doctorates are not eligible for support under these schemes. International Scholarships LJMU offers a range of scholarships for international applicants accepted onto taught masters programmes (excluding distance learning programmes) and research degrees. These scholarships take the form of tuition fee waivers. Current LJMU international students and alumni interested in pursuing postgraduate study and research at the University are eligible to apply for these scholarships along with new applicants. For full eligibility criteria and details on how to apply, go to: ljmu.ac.uk/international English for Postgraduate Studies Bursary A Bursary is also available for international students who must complete the six week English for Postgraduate Studies course to improve their IELTS score by 0.5 prior to enrolling on their postgraduate course or research programme at the University. This course is run by LJMU s International Study Centre: ljmuisc.com This Bursary is worth 700 and takes the form of a tuition fee waiver, which will be deducted from your tuition fee when you progress onto your Masters degree or research programme. You do not need to complete the online scholarship application form to receive this Bursary. Please note: If you are awarded this Bursary you are not eligible to apply for an international scholarship.
