2 Why study this programme? This programme extends the knowledge, understanding and skills of professionals in, amongst others, schools, colleges, further and higher education and government organisations who have a commitment to their continuing professional development and improved practice. It also meets the needs of participants who wish to further their study of education as an academic discipline. Participants build their programme by combining core courses, option courses and an educational research project; these are delivered through face-to-face teaching, self-study, and negotiated and work-based learning. In this way, it is possible to achieve an endorsed MA which focuses on a specialist area of particular professional and/or academic relevance to an individual or institution. We welcome enquiries about ways in which this can be developed and are able to adapt the programme for individual institutional needs through a tailored MA that can be delivered at a designated school, FE college or local authority. Participants may receive credit for prior learning, experience and qualifications (for example, Master s credits achieved during a PGCE). This can then exempt them from part of the MA programme. The programme is underpinned by the notion that its participants, working as reflective practitioners and researchers, can interrogate theory and practice to create new knowledge. It aims to: Provide current and aspiring education practitioners and institutions with a flexible Master s programme which extends knowledge and practice through study and research Support continuing professional development, facilitating the progression of practitioners and institutions and contributing to personal and institutional effectiveness Provide those with a background and/or strong interest in education with a rigorous and engaging introduction to studying education as an academic subject at postgraduate level. Where will you study? There are two ways of engaging with the MA Education programme: individuals can attend the programme at our Avery Hill Campus or a tailored MA can be delivered at a designated school, FE college or local authority.
3 Why study with us? The Department of Education & Community Studies, part of the Faculty of Education & Health, offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes for those interested in careers in education, childcare, youth work and the wider public sector. Many members of the department are internationally recognised leaders in their field and have published in highly regarded academic and practitioner journals. The department is home to two research centres: the Centre for the Study of Play & Recreation and the Centre for Natural Learning & Environments. We also have close links with professional bodies such as Play England and the National Youth Agency as well as with partner colleges and the wider community through joint programmes and work placements. The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. The Students Union University of Greenwich ( co.uk) organises a variety of sports and social activities on campus. What will you study? You may tailor your award through a specialism so that it reflects your professional interests and area of responsibility. Currently, we offer the following specialisms: MA Education (Leadership and Management) MA Education (E-Learning) MA Education (Literacy) MA Education (Higher Education) MA Education (Special Educational Needs) MA Education (Youth and Community) MA Education (Early Years) MA Education (Childhood) MA Education (International). The programme can be studied full-time or part-time. Full-time attendance takes place over a calendar year. Part-time attendance takes place over two to three years and requires attendance in the early evening, generally one day a week. The programme is divided into three phases. Phase 1 Option course (30 credits) Option course (30 credits) Phase 2 Option course (30 credits) Enquiry Skills (30 credits) Phase 3 Enquiry Project (60 credits) Option courses include: Organisational Leadership and Management; Personal Leadership; Literacy (Exploring Texts for Learning); Literacy and Learning (Enriching Practice); The Child s Lived Experience (Developing Confident Learners); Leadership and Management in Early Years; Key Themes and Debates in Childhood; Critical Approaches to Research in Childhood; Principles and Practice of Youth and Community Work; The Professional Practice of Youth and Community Work; Policy and Practice in Technology Enhanced Learning; 21st Century Technologies and Education; Critical Issues in SEN and Disability (Pedagogy and Practice); Critical Issues in SEN and Disability (Discourse and Policy); Comparative Education; Negotiated Independent Study
4 Key facts Attendance: One year full-time (daytime and early evening attendance), or two to three years part-time (one evening per week) Entry requirements: You should have: EITHER an undergraduate degree at 2.1 or above How to apply: Applications to postgraduate programmes should be made online at gre.ac.uk/apply. There is no closing date for applications to postgraduate programmes, but many fill up quickly, so applicants are advised to apply early. OR an undergraduate degree at 2.2 and a professional qualification in, for example, education, health or the emergency services.
5 Career opportunities Graduates from this programme may go on to develop careers in a wide range of roles and institutions, from middle and senior management opportunities in education and healthcare organisations to doctoral study and research.
