2 Why study this programme? Students will learn skills required to manage a software project by producing criteria to monitor the project s progress and measure outcomes. The programme will teach formulation of requirements for a business system and will give an understanding of the nature of software development and its inherent complexity. Students will cover system process modelling topics, user interface and database design issues. They will learn to develop a system from requirements determination to graphic user interface and database implementation. This programme will be of particular interest to those with a first degree in business or with business experience. Students will be given an understanding of the information technologies upon which e-commerce is built and how these technologies provide us with new ways of organising and managing business. On successful completion of this programme students should be proficient in the development of Internet, web and database technologies. They will also have developed the project management skills required for IT consultancy and strategic decision making. Why study with us? We have pioneered programmes in computing, information systems, digital and multimedia technology, interactive multimedia games, networking, Internet and web technologies, data mining, mathematics, statistics, decision science and computational science and engineering. Our students study on the university s Greenwich Campus, which is part of the Old Royal Naval College and on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings, designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a mix of markets, shops,

3 restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous museums and tourist attractions in the country. By train, central London is only a few minutes away. What will you study? Content On this programme students: Gain an in-depth knowledge of the strategic perspective of IT and how SIS are used in gaining and sustaining a competitive advantage Develop demonstrable strategic planning and project management skills relating to large-scale web sites and intranets Develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the current and emerging web technologies Understand and apply principles of database technology and the relational model to the development of database applications Apply the acquired skills and knowledge in solving business problems Demonstrate subject-specific skills with respect to the application of usercentred design and usability analysis methodologies Evaluate the planning of, and activities arising form, procurement and outsourcing across cultures to understand how to build robust outsourcing partnerships Plan and implement an information system project in a variety of cases. Career opportunities Upon successful completion of this Master s programme students should be proficient in the development of Internet, web and database technologies. They will also have developed the project management skills required for IT consultancy and strategic decision making. Students graduating from this programme would typically be in a position to become business analysts, IT consultants, Internet and web developers or IT managers. Teaching and assessment The programme is taught using a combination of formal lectures, classroombased tutorials and laboratory sessions and case studies.
