3 Business Management at Winchester Winchester Business School at the University of Winchester has an established and highly successful undergraduate programme in Business Management. This programme aims to develop confident, responsible and innovative managers and leaders of the future who are able to meet the challenges of managing and leading sustainable businesses in a complex and global economy. Winchester Business School was one of the first UK Schools to adopt the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education and is an acknowledged leader in the field. Responsible management and ethical leadership are core themes embedded throughout the programme together with the importance of enterprise and innovation to contemporary businesses, and the increasing need for social and environmental sustainability. Students may choose to pursue a general Business Management programme or specialise in Business Management with Enterprise and Innovation. The opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in a diverse range of subject areas is provided, including strategy, managing people, finance, marketing, operations management and communications. The real-world experience of business management is a complex activity constantly drawing upon many aspects simultaneously. Business managers must be able to grasp an often complex blend of situations and develop problem-defining and critical analysis skills in order to inform decision making. Such knowledge and skills are relevant in the private, public and not-for- profit sectors, and in large as well as small organisations enabling students to develop a career in a range of roles within business. Work placement Students may choose to spend a year on work placement before moving on to the final year of study. This is normally a paid placement and all placements are approved by the Winchester Business School s academic faculty to ensure that they are suitable and valuable for the student s learning. Applications for placements are subject to the same recruitment and selection processes as those used in industry and require students to prepare their curriculum vitae, complete an application form and 1
4 Business Management at Winchester attend for interview. Whilst on placement students receive support from an academic Placement Supervisor. A placement year has been shown to improve the overall performance of graduates whilst on the programme and further enhances their career development and employment opportunities. Learning and teaching A variety of learning, teaching and assessment methods is used and the teaching team has an established track record of excellence, which is reflected in very high levels of student retention and satisfaction. Learning and teaching combines lectures, interactive seminars and workshops and during the programme, students develop a broad range of managerial skills. These include selforganisation, team-working, effective communications, problem- identification and resolution, decision-making and selfdevelopment. Development of these skills is encouraged through the use of small group projects, business simulations, case study analysis and interaction with the local business community. In addition, students are encouraged to attend the external speaker events that are held at the Winchester Business School via the Centre of Responsible Management. Assessment Students are assessed throughout the programme using a range of methods to include coursework reports, business plans, presentations, essays and case study analysis and exams. Assessments are individual or group based and may involve computerised business simulations or consultancy based projects. Careers A degree in Business Management is excellent preparation for students interested in a wide range of business careers such as general management, strategic planning, project management, business development and product development as well as roles within finance, human resources and marketing. Business Management is also regarded highly by employers, therefore opening up a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates have also used the opportunities presented while on the programme to plan and launch their own businesses. Postgraduate study BA (Hons) Business Management provides the starting point for further career development, which could involve full or part-time study towards a Masters degree, or professional qualifications such as those offered by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) or the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). Winchester Business School has an expanding portfolio of Masters degrees including MSc Accounting and Finance, MSc Business Management, MSc Marketing Innovation and MSc Project Management. Students may also, after a period in employment, return to study the MBA (Master of Business Administration) at Winchester.
