3 Media and Communication at Winchester The Media and Communication pathways at Winchester focus on the dynamic nature of media and communication in the twenty-first century. Media institutions and industries are looked at in addition to the diverse ways in which audiences and consumers now engage with media to generate their own content. Teaching is research-led, informed by topical issues at local, national and global levels. There is a strong emphasis upon exploring how even theoretical concepts can have important practical applications for organisations including commercial enterprises, voluntary and third sector organisations, public services and community campaigning. You can study Media and Communication as a specialist programme at Winchester, or you can choose to follow one of the dedicated pathways in Advertising, Journalism, Social Media or Audio Communication. All routes offer a balance between modules that involve critical academic study and modules that provide insight into the practical skills, approaches and concepts that are employed in key media industries. Programme structure Year 1 is foundational with all students taking three mandatory modules. One introduces key concepts in the study of media and communication; a second begins to explore the ways in which digital technologies converge with old media; and the third offers practical opportunities to begin to apply communication concepts in the planning of media campaigns. Students also choose from a mix of additional modules. They can acquire further practical skills in video, sound or image production, or they can deepen their academic understanding by taking modules in reading film and film history. In Year 2 all students take one module in media theory; one module in media research methods, which helps to prepare them for a dissertation or extended practical project in the final year; and the work placement module. Media and Communication students (including Combined Honours students) can then choose from a wide range of optional modules, some emphasising critical academic study and others more practical approaches. In Years 2 and 3, students select specific modules which allow them to specialise in ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Typical offer: points* If English is not your first language: IELTS 6.0 (including 6.0 in writing) or equivalent If you do not have the necessary level of English there are pre-sessional English language training programmes available at the University that may allow you to meet your minimum entry requirements. Please see the University website for details. *Entry requirements correct at time of print. For up-to-date entry requirements please visit the website at 1

These include BBC Solent, Mid Hampshire Primary Care Trust, the Aziz Corporation, IBM, Age Concern and Naomi House (Hospice). Working with these kinds of organisations gives our students invaluable experience in working to organisation briefs, managing client relationships and delivering creative work to deadline. The School of Media and Film at Winchester is guided by advice from its own Industry Advisory Panel. Learning and teaching Students attend scheduled lectures, seminars and tutorials. Lectures are intended to provide an overview of the key themes, approaches or issues which students need to understand in order to engage with a topic. Seminars involve smaller group discussions and give students more opportunity to direct their study and contribute to discussions. Tutorials are usually either one-to-one meetings with a member of staff or a very small group meeting. In these, students can clarify issues they are not certain about or seek guidance on aspects of study. Teaching team Staff on these programmes are active researchers as well as educators, publishing regularly in a variety of specialist areas including media education and digital technology; crime and media; financial journalism; gender and media; media and development; political communication; social media; crime drama; popular music; and zombies and zombie culture. Staff publications and research activity scored very well in the two most recent government assessments of research excellence; it has an international as well as national profile. Nevertheless, teaching 3

6 Media and Communication at Winchester and the delivery of the best possible learning experience to students remains the highest priority. The staff team including the programme administrators and technical staff are approachable, easy to contact and committed to providing appropriate support, ensuring that students gain confidence and feel comfortable right from the start of their study. Campus facilities The Martial Rose Library is well stocked with books and journals, including electronic editions, so students can learn on campus and at home. A number of these are specialist resources for the study of media and communication (journals, newspapers, news and media databases). There is also a large collection of films and audio-visual resources. The Multimedia Centre offers industrystandard technical suites and equipment, including two TV studios, radio studios, film and sound editing suites and Apple imac suites. Film, photography and lighting equipment can be hired from the loan counter. Training is available on all equipment and software. In recent years, student production projects have been highly commended by organisations in Hampshire s business and voluntary sectors these communities continue to commission media students for particular local projects. Career opportunities The Media and Communication pathways have been designed to support students in the development of exciting graduate careers. Graduates may enter careers within advertising, journalism, corporate communications, media campaign management, social media and audio industries. The programmes also foster a key set of flexible skills that are relevant to a wide range of careers in communication work, HR business, education, management and public service.
