1 Lecturer in the School of Computer Applications Job Description The School of Computer Applications is responsible for the disciplines of computing and quantitative methods within the University and has thirty-nine full time academics, a School manager, eight technical support staff and two full-time secretaries. The Faculty Office has four full time administrative posts. The B.Sc. in Computer Applications, the flagship undergraduate degree programme from the School, is, by a factor of two, the most sought-after qualification in Computing in Ireland in recent years and this has led to a highly motivated and challenging group of students. The programme is structured as a common entry into first year with three overlapping streams, Computer Science, Information Systems and Software Engineering. Diversity is added to our teaching through involvement in the B.Sc. in Computational Linguistics and the B.Sc. in Mathematical Sciences and to our taught Masters programme in Computer Applications and a Graduate Diploma/M.Sc. in Information Technology. In Autumn 2000 we launched a new full-time M.Sc. degree in Electronic Commerce, jointly offered with the Dublin City University Business School. The School is located in a purpose built building that it shares with the National Centre for Software Engineering. An extension to this building was completed in 1999 and makes our dedicated space approximately 4,500 m 2. The building has staff offices, an administrative centre, seminar rooms and postgraduate research areas as well as twelve undergraduate teaching laboratories. Undergraduate computing facilities in the School include over 470 desktop machines running both Solaris and Windows NT and 150 special purpose educational computers designed by the School. In addition there is a range of specialist hardware, video and other special purpose equipment. Research facilities for Faculty and graduate students include a range of Unix workstations and servers including an IBM S/390 mainframe running Linux, which deliver more than adequate computing power for our requirements. All computers are networked using Novell, TCP/IP and NFS with a Gigabit Ethernet backbone delivering 100 Mb/s connections to each desktop machine. Naturally, all staff and students have access to the Internet and WWW. In terms of teaching there are almost 1000 students taking computing degrees either fulltime or part-time, undergraduate and postgraduate. Demand for places on the full-time undergraduate programme in computing run by the School is by far the highest in Ireland, and the graduates enjoy an excellent reputation. In addition to our own computing degrees and the shared programmes in Computational Linguistics, Mathematical Sciences and Electronic Commerce, the School provides a teaching input into some of the other degree programmes run by the University. Further details on our teaching activities can be found in the Faculty booklet and on the School website.

2 Research is seen as an important component of the work of academic staff and is supported strongly. Many of our staff are in receipt of outside funding from Enterprise Ireland, the National Software Directorate, various programmes within the EU, and from industry. Research funding in Ireland as a whole and also within the University has been transformed over the last couple of years as the importance of research to the national interest has been realised. While always competitive and based on high standards, the number of new research programmes and initiatives to which the computing researcher can seek support is helping to foster a new emphasis and importance on research and this is reflected within the School of Computer Applications. The breadth of research interests from Faculty reflects the diverse and wide-ranging nature of our discipline and ranges from formal and theoretical aspects of computer science through to the enabling technologies underpinning the discipline, and on into applications of computing. There are currently approximately 50 research students in the School supported by outside funding or through the resources of the School. Further details of our research interests can be found in the booklet on our Research Profile, and also on the school's website. The School's teaching and research activities are increasing over the next few years in response to the recognised skills shortage in the country and the increased emphasis placed on research activities. As a result of these continuing increases in teaching and research, and the launch of new programmes, the School seeks to recruit high-calibre Faculty motivated in both research and teaching. The successful candidates will be expected to be active in research and in the continued development and teaching of the taught programmes for which the School is responsible. We seek to develop and deepen our research expertise and interests in a number of areas. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the areas listed below although high-calibre applicants in any area within the broad spectrum of computing are also encouraged to apply. Business Computing Computational Linguistics and Speech Processing Computer Architecture Computer Graphics Computer Systems Hardware Computing and Education Computing and Quantitative Methods Cryptography Formal Methods Human-Computer Interaction Information Systems Organisation Logic Multimedia Technologies including Digital Video Parallel Computation Security Protocols and Encryption Scientific Computing Software Engineering

3 Candidates will have considerable experience in teaching and research. The appointee is likely to have gained (or be near to completing) a doctorate and/or have published widely. Applications are also welcome from well qualified candidates who can demonstrate a clear commitment to a career in teaching and research and a determination to pursue a Ph.D. As part of the selection process, candidates invited for interview will be expected to give two short presentations to School staff, one on their research interests and the other of a pedagogic nature on a topic notified to them in advance. Further information on the School and on our activities can be found on the WWW at and informal enquiries may be made to Prof. Alan Smeaton, Head of School (asmeaton@compapp.dcu.ie) Salary Scales: Lecturer: 29,218-47,956 (above bar) 22,362-27,971 (below bar) Appointments will be made above or below the bar depending on qualifications, experience and availability of positions. Closing Date: 18 th May 2001
