Le Passé Composé Everything you need to know about conjugating verbs in the passé composé in French
Review of basic Passé Composé To describe actions in the past, you use the passé composé in French. It's formed by combining a helping verb and a past participle. The helping verb conjugates into the 6 forms and yet the participle remains the same for all 6 people.
Helping verb - avoir The helping verb used for most verbs is "avoir" and so the forms "ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont" are very important. The past participle is formed by dropping the ending and adding "é" for "er" verbs, "i" for "ir" verbs and "u" for "re" verbs...
Regular past participles... parler parlé finir fini vendre vendu BUT there are LOTS of irregular ones...
Irregulars the "U" ones avoir - eu boire - bu connaître - connu croire - cru devoir - dû lire lu pleuvoir - plu pouvoir pu recevoir - reçu savoir - su voir - vu vouloir - voulu
Irregulars the "IS" ones mettre - mis prendre - pris
Irregulars the "IT" ones conduire - conduit dire - dit écrire - écrit
Irregulars plain irregular ones être été faire fait offrir offert ouvrir - ouvert
Example sentences... J'ai parlé au téléphone. Nous avons pris une douche. Il a vu le film plusieurs fois. Est-ce que tu as fait quelque chose hier soir?
Negatives... The "ne" and "pas" (or "jamais", etc.) always go around the form of avoir NOT the past participle... Je n'ai pas compris. Vous n'avez jamais lu ce livre. Ils n'ont pas choisi le restaurant.
Another helping verb... être There is a group of verbs that use "être (suis, es, est, sommes, êtes, sont). Just like "homes" is an acronym to remember the Great Lakes, "Dr & Mrs. P. Vandertramp" is an acronym to remember these verbs.
D devenir = to become (past participle - devenu)
R revenir = to come back (past participle - revenu)
M mourir = to die (past participle - mort)
R rester = to stay (past participle - resté)
S sortir = to leave; to go out (past participle - sorti)
P passer = to pass by (past participle - passé)
V venir = to come (past participle - venu)
A arriver = to arrive (past participle - arrivé)
N naître = to be born (past participle - né)
D descendre = to go down (past participle - descendu)
E entrer = to enter (past participle - entré)
R rentrer = to go back; return (past participle - rentré)
T tomber = to fall (past participle - tombé)
R retourner = to return (past participle - retourné)
A aller = to go (past participle - allé)
M monter = to go up (past participle - monté)
P partir = to leave (past participle - parti)
Similar Verbs... Verbs that contain the entire vandertramp verb within them are also conjugated in a similar way like souvenir, remonter, renaître, etc. even if there isn't room for them in the acronym.
Agreement... All vandertramp verbs require agreement at the end of the participle to match the person. Elle est allée. Nous sommes descendues. Ils sont retournés.
More verbs that use... être All reflexive verbs use "être". When you conjugate reflexives into the passé composé, don't forget to add the pronoun and agree!!!!
Examples of reflexives... Je me suis maquillée. Ils se sont amusés. Nous ne nous sommes pas dépêchées. Elle ne s'est pas brossé les dents.* (* no agreement when a body part follows!)
Part-time vandertramps... *monter when it means to carry something up is NOT one *descendre when it means to take something down is NOT one *sortir when it means to take something out is NOT one *passer when it means to spend time is NOT one
And therefore... Those verbs would go back to using "avoir" and not have agreement. J'ai sorti la poubelle. Elles ont monté la valise. Est-ce que tu as passé l'été en France?
Unless... Unless there is an object (typically spotted by a "le, la, l', les) coming before the verb.. La poubelle? Je l'ai sortie. La valise? Elles l'ont montée. Les clefs? Je les ai descendus.
BECAUSE direct objects... When there is a direct object pronoun in a normal passé composé sentence, you agree the end of the participle with the item. (it comes in the front) Les films? Je les ai vus. La glace? Nous l'avons achetée.
Adverbs... Adverbs can go before or after the past participle depending on the adverb or on the meaning... J'ai trop étudié. Il a marché beaucoup.
