Helpful Hints: After parler, there is not usually a definite article. o EXAMPLE: Elle étudie l espagnol. Elle parle espagnol. Did you notice the spelling change for the female? Remember to make sure your adjective always agrees with the noun is modifies (describes). o EXAMPLE: Il est mexicain. Elle est mexicaine. o EXAMPLE: Il est français. Elle est française. What do you think you add if the noun is masculine and plural? Les garçons sont canadien. How about if the noun is feminine and plural? Les filles sont allemand. Lesson 9.06 Les verbes en -re This is the smallest group of regular verbs. Some examples are: vendre, répondre, attendre. Please become familiar with the list of verbs on page 1 of the lesson. Remember, you cannot always leave a verb in its infinitive form. Sentences like She to sell and We to wait don t make sense! You have to conjugate the verb, or give a different form of the verb so that it makes sense (She sells and We wait). Remember how simple it was to conjugate er and ir verbs? It s just as simple for re verbs!! Just follow these steps: 1. Start by crossing off the re at the end of the verb. ex: vendre attendre 2. You are left with a stem (vend, attend) 3. Add the following endings to the remaining stem:

8 Je - s Nous - ons Tu - s Vous - ez Il/elle/on - Ils/elles - ent Ex: Did you notice? The il/elle/on form? You don t add anything to the stem! Je vends Tu vends Il/elle/on vend Nous vendons Vous vendez Ils/elles vendent J attends Tu attends Il/elle/on attend Nous attendons Vous attendez Ils/elles attendent Helpful Hints: Note the verbs that use à (render visite à). You might not use it in English, but it is necessary to include in French!
