Course Description: Welcome to French This is the sequel to French 1301, designed to continue the introduction to the language and culture of the French-speaking countries. The students will practice the four language skills (listening/understanding, speaking, reading, and writing) both with the instructor and with classmates. The text provides abundant communicative activities along with many form-focused exercises and offers a good variety of authentic cultural materials. Practice will continue with technology-based materials. National Standards describe the five C s of Foreign Language Education: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Successful students will learn how, when, and why to say what to whom. Learning Outcomes: Students should be able to express personal meaning, hold simple conversations, ask and answer simple questions, and write short, simple narrations on topics covering basic personal information such as self and family, daily activities, personal preferences, and immediate needs. Orally and in writing, they should have control over present tense and an emerging control over past and future time frames. Students should also be able to read and comprehend grammatically complex texts in more detail. Students should be able to communicate important features of the target language history and culture. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to communicate in all 3 modes interpretive, presentational, interpersonal at the ACTFL novice high intermediate low level; please see the link to the ACTFL guidelines further down in the syllabus. Other Resources: ACTFL guidelines Standards Pre-test and Post-test: At the beginning of each chapter you will have to take a pre-test. This test is taken so you know how to learn for the coming chapter in essence you are not supposed to know the answers to most of the questions. The pretest can be taken by going to the ilrn site, selecting the correct chapter and then click on self-test. Two testing options will pop up: pre-test and post-test. Click on pre-test and take the test. Once we have finished the chapter take the post-test. The post-test is a good preparation for each exam. You are required to take pre- and post-test for each chapter. Taking the pre- and post-tests will form 05% of your grade. REQUIREMENTS: Welcome to Entre Amis, a four-semester French program that will help you explore the French language and culture using a textbook (hard copy and/or online), web activities, videos and interactive online activities. Most of your assignments will have to be submitted online and you are able to check most of your results immediately. You will be able to pace yourself and redo your online assignments before the due date. Make sure you start early on your online assignments. Don t wait until the night before the due date! During the second semester we will cover Chapter 5 through Chapter 8. The communicative goals for each chapter are as follows: Chapitre V: Expressing future time, telling time, explaining your schedule, telling where to find places. Chapitre VI: Relating past events, describing your study habits, describing your weekend activities Chapitre VII: Relating past events, describing your background, stating what you just did Chapitre VIII: Ordering a French meal, discussing quantities, expressing an opinion, expressing a preference You will achieve these goals by practicing vocabulary and grammar with your teacher and your classmates (online and in the classroom). In addition, you will get acquainted with French culture through videos and online materials, learning not only the French language but also non-verbal communicative tools such as facial expressions and gestures. In the Entre Amis ilrn site you will also find the following features that will help you learn vocabulary and gain a better understanding of grammar: Itunes Grammar tutorials Grammar podcasts Audio flashcards Games Crossword puzzles

5 My Role / Your Role: Because of the way languages are learned by adults, you really cannot be taught French. Therefore, my role is to facilitate language learning by creating an environment, in which the language acquisition process is enhanced, guiding you and assessing your progress. Every course requirement is designed with this in mind; there is no busy work assigned. All of the course work has a purpose. Your role is to fully immerse yourself in the work both in the classroom and through outside/ online assignments. The way you learn a language is influenced by individual learner factors such as sensory modalities (e.g., visual, auditory, kinesthetic), social preferences (group/independent), cognitive styles (e.g., impulsiveness/ reflection), flexibility/inflexibility, motivation, speed, systematic learning /intuitiveness, tolerance of ambiguity, attitude and aptitude. We recommend that you take successive semesters of study, hence don t skip a semester or even a year! Don t delay taking a foreign language until your junior/senior year. The earlier you start learning a foreign language, the easier it will be for you. If you have taken foreign language classes at another institution check with the Department of English and Modern Languages on the transferability of these language courses. Office Hours: Office hours held are also for remedial purposes. Please contact me early on if material is unclear to you or if you have any other questions regarding the class. You are most likely to make contact by . Attendance: Class attendance is absolutely crucial to your success in this course. You are allowed 3 absences for any reason; for every absence after 3, there is a deduction of 2 points from your final grade. Each missed portion of a class (late arrival, leaving early, exiting and re-entering, etc.) will be counted as one-third (1/3) absence. However, you are only allowed to make up a test, an oral or a composition if you have a valid reason for an absence. According to the Angelo State University Bulletin, valid reasons for an absence include illness, family emergency or participation in an authorized university activity. If you have one of these valid reasons, it is your responsibility to contact me in advance if possible, and to provide documentation to excuse the absence. If you can t contact me in advance of the test/oral/composition day you have to contact me within twenty-four hours after the test/oral/composition has been administered in class. Absence from Class for Religious Reasons: A student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. Compositions (Redactions) and Orals: The compositions and orals (dialog and/or interview) are on topics we will have prepared in class or through online assignments. It is therefore to your advantage to do all the required online assignments by the due-date. The compositions will be completed in class. Orals will either be conducted in my office or will be an assigned partner activity conducted in class. Make-ups will only be given if you provide documentation and give a valid reason why you were absent. Tests: There will be four (4) tests, including the final, clearly marked on the syllabus covering the grammar points, the readings, the web-assignments, and the online activities. 6 Online Book Activities/Online Workbook Activities: The online activities form a substantial part of your grade. It is very important that you complete these activities diligently and in a timely manner. Make it a habit to work every day for an hour on your online activities. It will allow you to control your overall learning in this class. If you have problems with the internet and the completion of your assignments contact me early on. If you don t have a computer with the necessary equipment, there is the possibility of using university equipment. Make sure you always come prepared to class. Pre-test/Post-test: Each chapter has an online pre-test and an online post-test. Take these tests; they tell you what you need to study to move on. The pre-test tells you what you will learn in the chapter, the post-test might point you to areas you should reinforce to be well prepared for the chapter test. Make sure you take the post-test the day before the exam. You are required to take the pre- and post-test, but your grades on these tests are not important to me; they tell you what you have to learn. You are graded on completion of these tests. Participation: In a foreign language class participation is crucial to your success. The more you practice your listening and speaking skills, the better for you. We will have many group activities and question and answer sessions, which will allow you to practice your oral skills. Activities: You are invited to join the French Club (Le Cercle français) in many activities. This is an excellent opportunity to practice French and to learn more about francophone cultures. As you reach a more advanced level of French, you may have the opportunity to study in the department's exchange program in France and join Alpha Mu Gamma (The National Foreign Language Honor Society). Students are urged to maintain a high academic standard to be eligible for membership. Study Abroad: ASU offers every year various study abroad programs to France and other francophone countries. For further information please talk to your instructor or to the study abroad coordinator in the Center for International Studies.
