4 COMPETITION The Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge is a competition designed for payers aged 9 through 14 to demonstrate the most basic of soccer skis the penaty kick. Each payer wi be aowed 15 shots at the goa from the penaty ine (12 yards from the goa). The goa wi be divided into a series of five scoring zones. The upper corners of the goa wi be designated as 20 point zones. The ower corners wi be designated as 10 point zones and the centra region is a five point zone. To construct the five scoring zones attach a piece of rope approximatey six and a haf to seven feet in ength diagonay across the four corners of the goa as shown in the diagram beow. Use tent stakes to secure the bottom ropes to the ground. 8 feet 4ft 8ft feet 8ft 8ft 5 8ft 8ft Scoring To score this competition each participant wi be given 15 penaty kicks. Points wi be awarded depending upon the area of the scoring zones through which the ba passes. For exampe, after the payer s 15 penaty kicks, his/her scores are 5/10/20/5/5/5/5/10/10/5/20/5/10/5/5, his/her tota score woud be 125. A score of 125 woud be marked on the entry form/score sheet. Norma rues of soccer regarding penaty kicks appy for a eves of competition. Penaty kick vioations incude stepping on or over the ine prior to the kick, and any contact made with the ba counts as a kick. Scorers shoud record shots made and missed according to the instructions on the entry form/score sheet. It is aso recommended that mutipe scorers be assigned to each goa for scoring accuracy and comparison. A scores shoud be verified before the next contestant is aowed to shoot. The use of video tape recording is not recommended to resove questions on scoring totas. Judges and scorers are given fina authority in verifying a scores and vioations ft 8ft Judges/Scorers/Ba Catchers Judges, scorers, and ba catchers wi be seected by the Soccer Chaenge Chairman at the counci eve, by the district deputy at the district eve, and by the state deputy at the regiona and state eves. The recommended minimum is one judge, two scorers, and a ba catcher at each goa. It is recommended that vounteer parents be utiized in age groups other than the group(s) in which their chid (chidren) competes. The judge wi ensure that each participant receives the proper number of shots on goa and wi point out any kicking vioations (see scoring section). A questions wi be resoved by the judges and Soccer Chaenge chairman. Scorers shoud refer to the scoring instructions incuded on the entry form/score sheet. Page 3

5 Reguations The recommended time frame for the Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge is: Counci Championship September District Championship October Regiona Championship October/November State Championship November Specific dates for Regiona and State Championships are avaiabe from the state program director. A program materia shoud be ordered 4 weeks before your contest to ensure avaiabiity. State officias shoud notify each counci and district deputy we in advance concerning the dates, times and ocations of the regiona and state championships. The district deputy is responsibe for notifying councis of the date, time and ocation of the district competition. The grand knight or Soccer Chaenge chairman shoud notify the counci winners of the date, time and ocation of the next eve of competition. Eigibiity The Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge is open to a boys and girs in your community, ages Age eigibiity is determined by the age of the contestant as of September 1. Proof of age is required. Athetes in high schoo shoud be advised to check with their schoo athetic directors or their state high schoo athetic associations regarding possibe eigibiity conficts. age must accompany participants through a eves of competition. The counci number shoud aso be ceary written on the form. Winners wi progress to the district, regiona, and state competitions. Internationa champions are chosen on the basis of state-eve resuts. Fied/Equipment Each eve of competition shoud be hed on a oca soccer fied or suitabe faciity approved by and under the supervision of a participating Knights of Coumbus counci. Check with your parks and recreation department for avaiabiity and usage reguations. Do this as eary as possibe, because schoo/recreation teams are aso reserving fied space. Age Specifications Ages 9, 10,11 (Boys & Girs Competitions): Use a reguation-size soccer ba (size #4) and shoot 12 yards from the goa. Ages 12,13,14 (Boys & Girs Competitions): Use a reguation-size soccer ba (size #5) and shoot 12 yards from the goa. Entries A competitors must register using the officia Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge Entry Form/Score Sheet (#4578) provided in the Soccer Chaenge Kit or at kofc.org/soccer using the support materias ink. 6 Competition Leves Counci Leve Each contestant receives three practice kicks foowed by 15 consecutive kicks from the 12-yard penaty ine. A age groups kick from the same distance. In the event a tie breaker is necessary, it shoud be conducted as foows: each contestant wi have the opportunity to take 3 kicks from a position three yards behind the penaty kick ine, if the contestants are sti tied then they wi continue to take turns of 3 kicks each unti a cear winner emerges. District, Regiona and State Leve District deputies shoud inquire with their councis to see who is having a soccer chaenge. If ony one counci participates, a district contest isn t necessary. If the district contest is needed, ca to order award medas free of charge. These must be ordered individuay by district deputies. 7 Internationa Leve Internationa champions are determined on the basis of best scores submitted from the state-eve competitions in each age category. The prize is a crysta trophy engraved with the winner s name, counci and city. In the event of a tie both parties are decared winners. NOTE: In the event that a winner in any eve cannot participate in the next eve of competition, the second-pace winner shoud represent the area for that age group. 8 The Soccer Chaenge is fun and easy to conduct. Here are steps to foow to ensure a successfu Soccer Chaenge Championship. Counci Competition The counci Soccer Chaenge chairman shoud foow these guideines: Aways use the program s officia name: Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge. Order the Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge kit (#SC-Kit) using the order form on page 3 of the Counci Report Forms Booket (#1436). Contact schoos, community centers or youth centers and reserve a soccer fied. Ask oca sports teams, coeges or universities to work with your counci on the Soccer Chaenge as part of their community outreach program. Whie September is the recommended month for conducting a counci competition, councis shoud be fexibe and work around the schedues of oca schoo s teams. A oca competitions shoud be hed so that the winners can participate in the district competitions, and district events shoud be hed prior to regiona or state events. If an insurance certificate is requested a 1 day poicy for $1 miion of coverage can be purchased from R. C. Knox and Co. Contact Ha Smuen at Contact the schoos in your area to expain the program. Seek permission of the principas, athetic directors, and superintendents to conduct the program as part of their physica education or intramura program, or ask for an endorsement encouraging students to participate in this community sports program. High schoo athetes shoud be reminded to check with their state high schoo athetic association/athetic director about possibe eigibiity conficts. Contact officias from the town recreation department or oca youth soccer eagues to promote the competition among their payers. Teams and schoos can hod preiminary competitions to determine winners by age groups to advance to the counci competition. Make sure that entry forms/score sheets are distributed in advance to the officias of the eagues or coaches of the teams. Dispay program posters prominenty to generate attention and participation. Ask to dispay posters in schoos, youth centers, church has, ibraries, Boys & Girs cubs, shopping centers, YMCA and YWCA buidings and the counci meeting pace. On the poster indicate the name of the contact person; the date, time and ocation of the competition; and a teephone number to ca for additiona information. Suppement these posters with newspaper ads, radio and TV spots and other pubicity. Additiona posters are avaiabe at no charge from the Supreme Counci office. Preregistration of athetes wi boost the number of participants and save time at the actua event. Distribute entry forms/score sheets to approved ocations. Make sure the teachers know your counci number and contact info. Personay deiver entry forms/score sheets to physica education teachers and coaches when possibe. Try to coect competed forms and proof-of-age documents before the competition to get a genera estimate on the number of participants. Pan the competition based on these numbers. Have an announcement made in schoo or send out a reminder of the competition immediatey before the event. Be ready to accept entry forms/score sheets from wak-in participants on the day of the competition. Don t forget that the Soccer Chaenge presents an exceent membership recruitment opportunity. Set up a tabe at the competition so that attending parents can earn about what the counci has to offer prospective members. Stock it with membership pamphets and Form 100 s to hand out. Make sure you get the phone number of potentia recruits to perform adequate foow-up procedures. Make a fina check of equipment and see that the reguation-size soccer bas are avaiabe and that the 12-yard penaty ines are ceary marked.verify that judges and scorers have been propery advised of their duties and responsibiities. Use the entry form/score sheet to record each participant s score. This form, and proof of age, must accompany each competitor as he or she progresses through the higher eves of competition. A counci-eve participants wi compete during the schedued hours of the competition and under the same conditions as a other competitors. No participants shoud be aowed to compete at any other time. Pump a bas we ahead of event so that the Supreme Counci can repace them if needed. Present Participation Certificates (#4573) to a participants, and Counci Champion Certificates (#4575) to the winners at the end of the competition. The Soccer Chaenge Kit contains 75 certificates for competitors. Tweve champions certificates are aso incuded. The Supreme Counci Suppy Department has paques, prizes, and promotiona items avaiabe which are suitabe for counci champions. These items incude reguation-size soccer bas, paques, and trophies a bearing the K of C ogo. Personaize the sampe announcement on page 10 by adding the names of the counci winners and send copies to oca and diocesan newspapers and radio stations. Immediatey foowing your counci s championship, the grand knight must compete and submit the Soccer Chaenge Participation Form (#4567) found on page 3 of the Counci Report Forms Booket and incuded in the Soccer Chaenge Kit as we as the support materias ink at kofc.org/soccer. This feedback provides vauabe statistics for participation and an overa assessment of the program. Incude the number of participants in the counci s competition as we as the number who participated in any preiminary schoo or eague competitions. Provide the entry forms/score sheets and the proof of age for the counci winners to the district deputy for the district competition. Make sure your counci number is on the form. Inform counci competition winners of the date, time and ocation of the district competition and any other eves of competition to which they are advancing. Be sure that a counci officia accompanies counci winners to a upcoming competitions as they advance. In the event that a winner in any eve cannot participate in the next eve of competition, the second-pace winner shoud represent the area. Page 8

10 Pubicity: Get the Word Out! One of the best ways to make sure your counci s soccer program is a success is to pubicize it. The program must aways be referred to as the Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge. After reserving a soccer fied and setting a date for the competition, use the sampe press reease on the next page to announce the event. Retype it, doube spaced, on counci etterhead, fiing in the necessary information giving who, what, when and where of your counci s schedued Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge. Make sure to incude the name, phone number and e-mai address of a contact person. Ask editors to pubish a reminder cose to the date of the championship and to ist it in the community or weekend caendars. Tak with assignment editors and suggest the competition as a great opportunity for a feature story. Make arrangements for a story about your winners. 11 Contact oca high schoos and coege athetic departments about the possibiity of hoding your Knights of Coumbus Soccer Chaenge prior to a game and then presenting awards to champions during haftime. If there is a professiona or semiprofessiona franchise in your area, contact its pubic reations office to see if arrangements can be made to honor winners of your competition during haftime. Aso, approach teams about the possibiity of getting payers to present awards to your champions. Loca sports teams, incuding sports other than soccer, may aso be wiing to donate uniforms, autographed memorabiia and other simiar items as awards or prizes for your champions. Conduct the district championship according to the rues covered in this booket. Organize entry forms/score sheets by age and gender. Use the entry form/score sheet to record each participant s score. This form, and proof of age, must accompany each champion as he or she progresses through the higher eves of competition. The counci number must aso be ceary written on the form. The state Soccer Chaenge chairman sha provide the name, address, and sponsoring counci, and state-eve scoring information to the Supreme Counci office in December on forms provided by the Department of Fraterna Services. This scoring information wi be used to determine the internationa winners. The deadine for reporting state winners to the supreme counci office is December 15. Internationa Leve Internationa champions are determined on the basis of the best scores from the state competitions submitted in each age category. The Supreme Counci office wi provide the forms to be competed by the state chairmen isting the champions, their scores and other important information. A state champions wi be notified by a persona etter of congratuations from the Supreme Knight Car A. Anderson and wi receive a Knights of Coumbus Internationa Soccer Chaenge Championship Award commissioned by the Supreme Counci and forwarded to the state deputy for presentation. Page 12
