1 Baltimore Leadership School For Young Women #348 8 th Grade Physical Science Course Syllabus Teacher: Criselda Belarmino Room # 508 Planning Period: 2:15PM 3:05AM Classroom Vision: Provide inquiry-based learning that promotes equality, individuality, selfconfidence, and to be more innovative and prepared to be globally competitive leaders after college among students at BLYSW Transform Baltimore, one young woman at a time References: Issues and Physical Science by Lab-aids Materials: Science notebook for the portfolio that stays in the classroom Loose Paper for note taking, quizzes and smart start Textbook Colored pencils, crayons Pencil and pen (blue or black) Post - it Course Description Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum and NGSS At this level, students need to become more systematic and sophisticated in conducting their investigations, some of which may last for weeks or more. This means closing in on an understanding of what constitutes a good investigation and explicitly discussing how explanation relates to experimental design. Even though the main purpose of student s investigations is to help them learn how science works, it is important to back up such experience with selected readings. Scientific explanation of the material world is built on theories and this is a good time to introduce a) an understanding of how theories are constructed and find both historical and modern examples of the theory development process; and b) an appreciation for the explanatory and predictive power of theories. By the end of Grade 8, children will have had multiple experiences applying and practicing all of the listed science skills and processes across the concept areas. Common Core State Standards for 8 th Grade Science Standards work in tandem with the Voluntary State Curriculum to define the college and career readiness line the former providing broad standards, the latter providing additional specificity. Hence, both should be considered when developing college and career readiness assessments. 1

2 Course Overview: This course includes major TOPICS in Physical Science: Studying Materials Scientifically; The Chemistry of Materials; Water; Energy Force and Motion Waves; Environmental Science and Issues. The topics are not numbered and the teacher has the academic freedom to decide what to teach and discuss in relation to Maryland School Assessment. This course will provide the basis for the level of understanding necessary for achievement and success in college, engineering and or related courses after high school. Grading Scale: The following is the BCPSS grading scale. In BCPSS, the passing rate is 60%, however in BLSYW, the passing grade is 70%. Students falling below 70% will receive Academic Warning Notices and request for a parent conference. 3 Grading System: Homework: Expect to have homework every now and then. Spare your extra time in doing your homework. It will help you a lot. Avoid cheating or copying. Be proud of your own work. No late homework will be accepted. Class Participation: We will use the method of Process Oriented Guided Instruction Learning (POGIL), Modeling Physical Science inquiry-based learning to provide more hands-on in 8 th Grade science. Therefore each member has a role in a group to maximize participations and guided by rubrics. Beside the roles in a group, behavior likewise is considered in grading. Behavior: (8 Total Points each day) Each day, you will receive 8 points for: Being On- time = 2 pts Being In proper uniform=2 pts Obeyed classroom norms = 2pts Completed Work = 2 pts Tests/Exams: Tests/ consist of group activities scores, multiple choice, essay questions, and Smart Start. Quizzes When possible, quizzes will be given at the end of the lesson as exit ticket or as the end of the chapter assessment as well as the Smart Start Smart Start: (Part of Classwork) This part will prepare you as take off for every day s lesson. It will be on the LCD projector or on the board at the beginning of the class period. Class work: Worksheet and Cornell notes Laboratory/Project/Portfolio/Notebook: A. Lab Notes: Investigations are the heart of physical science. Don t miss any of it. It may not be possible to have a make-up for unexcused and invalid absences. You will keep all the write-up in your notebook and nowhere else. Provide an assignment notebook different from Science Lab notebook. 3

4 Write-up should have the following parts: I. Date and class period II. The title of the activity III. Objective/purpose of the investigation/problem (In a question form) IV. Dependent and independent variables (If appropriate) V. Hypothesis (Before you do the activity) VI. List of materials VII. Drawing (Diagram/sketch of the set-up) VIII. Procedures (In your own words) IX. Data tables for the results (Design before the lab starts) X. Graph (Properly labeled) XI. Computations (If there is one) XII. Inferences: (Description of the results) XIII. Conclusion/s (Answer/s to the problem) B. Scrapbook/Notebook: All the BEST WORK done on paper such as lectures, quizzes, and researches should be pasted or written on the Lab notebook notebook/portfolio. This syllabus needs to be pasted at the back of the lab notebook. This will be graded and submitted every end of the quarter for 100 points so, reminder treat this portfolio as your personality. You can add pictures, colors, stickers, and art in your scrapbook. Be creative, personalize it. C. Research/Project: ( Researches/Science Fair Projects) -100 Points A research title is to be submitted at the end of the first quarter. I have to approve the science project proposal first to ensure safety and avoid plagiarism. You need to include your resources/references. The final research work is to be submitted/presented following a given format before the final test at the end of second quarter. Late work: Late work will not be accepted unless supported by a document stating a valid and documented reason (sickness or death) upon returning back to class. 0 grade for noncompliance. Make-up work: As soon as you return from being absent with a valid and documented reason (sickness or death in the family) see me to get your missed work. 4

5 Tardiness/Attendance: Lateness will be treated base on the school policy. Be on time. No make-up work for lateness unless the reason is valid and signed by an authority. Please don t be absent. You will lose a lot. Automatic Culture Vulture (CV): The following situations are examples of disservices to oneself or sister (1-2CV), disservice to school (3-4CV) and disservice to society (5-6CV): P Protocol in the morning (5CV) L Late (depending upon the minutes), Loud in and out of the classroom (5CV) OS- Out of Seat (5CV) and Out of Uniform (5CV) E Electronics Use (8CV) or Eating (2CV) points, Elevator Misuse (5CV) R- Rough Housing/Fighting (6CV) Coach Class: Tuesday If you really can t get the concept after exerting all the effort, let me know before you leave the room, and wait for my invite so I can meet you after school. Extra-Curricular Activities: As a member of the BLSYW SeaPerch Underwater Robotics, you are drafted to join field trips and participate in competitions within the school district or in another states.
