1 Honors Algebra 2 Trig 3 Credit Hours Room 101 Teacher: Linda Wiard-Bauer lindawb@mpls.k12.mn.us Honors Algebra 2 / Trigonometry Available: 3:10-4:30pm M, W, F; and by appointment. Course Description/Purpose This course will focus on elementary functions using multiple representations (graphical, numerical, algebraic and verbal) including linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions, linear systems, matrices, advanced graphing procedures and circular trigonometry. The student will develop advanced algebraic tools that will help them participate fully as a productive citizen in a changing world. We will focus on topics in the curriculum for the IB Standard Level and Higher Level Mathematics exams. UNITS OF STUDY: Patterns and Recursion Describing Data (Introduction to Statistics) Linear Models and Systems Functions, Relations, and Transformations Exponential, Power, and Logarithmic Functions Matrices and Linear Systems Quadratics and Other Polynomial Functions Parametric Equations and Trigonometry Conic Sections and Rational Functions Trigonometric Functions Series Probability Applications of Statistics 1

2 Course Goals/Learning Objectives Students will 1. Document solutions by communicating in writing, each step required to solve problems. 2. Solve problems using advanced algebraic concepts, including application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in unfamiliar situations. 3. Acquire and practice problem-solving skills which can be used in the real world. Prerequisites/Technology Use Prerequisite: Honors Geometry or Teacher Recommendation Use of electronic devices (including cell phones, music players, games, cameras, etc.), includes having them out, touching them, or using them is NEVER allowed during tests and quizzes is ONLY allowed in class when explicitly directed to by the teacher if unauthorized, will result in confiscation of the device! We should be using portable computing technology (cell-phone or ipod Touch) a few times during the year in class / at home. Textbook, Discovering Advanced Algebra, is available at classpass: southwest3 Students are expected to use the Portal to look up grades & missing assignments & keep apprised of their progress in class. Teacher s WebPage ( Bauer_Linda.html ) will include a calendar with assignments and tests, links to textbooks, agendas and more! 2

3 Required Textbooks/Equipment For Class: 1. Textbook: Discovering Advanced Algebra, Murdock, Kamischke & Kamischke, Key Curriculum Press, 2008 (or copy of current section) 2. Tools: Graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84) 3. Supplies: Single-subject Spiral Notebook (alternately, a pronged folder with loose leaf paper) with graph paper; Pencils & erasers 4. Optional: Internet-capable cell phone or ipod Touch (may be used in class 2-4 times during the year) For home: 1. Computer with Internet Access at home (or library) 2. Textbook (hard copy OR on-line version) 3. Tools & Supplies (see above) 3

4 Classroom Procedures/Policies Lesson Procedures 1. Copy the day, date and Agenda each day into your notebook. 2. Take notes and do problems in class and at home, in your notebook. Keep it in date order be sure to put the date at the top of each page. 3. Credit will be given for the work you show. This means that each problem should show step-by-step solutions and work, leading up to your final answer. Expectations 1. Treat people, property, and ideas with respect. 2. Bring necessary materials 3. Be responsible and give it your best. 4. Challenge yourself & have fun! Attendence Procedures 1. Be on time and IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT when the bell rings. Attendance is based on whether you are in YOUR SEAT. 2. If tardy to class, immediately when you arrive, a. With pass: give W-B the pass for her to sign; get it back. b. No pass: write a note to the office saying you were present but tardy (include your name, ID#, date & time); get it signed by W-B and get it back. c. THEN, take the signed note or pass to the attendance clerk in the office on your own time (lunch, before or after school, or passing time). 3. Be in your seat ready to work (notebook & pen out!) when the bell rings. 4. DO NOT line up at the door at the end of the period. 5. If you need a pass, you must write it in ink on the pass page of your planner. No planner, no pass. 6. If absent for a spot check on assignments, you must hand in ALL the completed assignments that the check covered. 7. If absent for a quiz or test, you must make it up within 4 days. 5 D+ 67 D 63 D- 60 F Below 60 Extra Credit: ONLY for Scoring points in a Math Team meet. (1 percentage point bump per meet this will be calculated at the END of each quarter.) Taking the AMC Exam in the Spring. (1 percentage point bump at END of the quarter.) NO OTHER EXTRA CREDIT. To improve your grade: 1. Read the section we will be covering BEFORE you come to class. 2. Pay attention, stay on task, and do not chat with friends (or text, or play games) during the lesson. 3. Remember, credit will be given for the work you show. This means that each problem should show step-by-step solutions and work, leading up to your final answer. 4. Complete and hand in ALL assignments that are collected. (Don t forget your full name & period!) We will have assignment checks some may be spot checks, some may be like open-homework quizzes. 5. If there is something you don t understand, ask the teacher! W-B is available during Make-up/Help times: 3-4:30 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; other times by appointment. 6. Do some math EVERY NIGHT! Even if you finished up your assignment at school, do at least one of each kind of problem or exercise AT HOME THE SAME DAY! It must be the same day to help move the info from short term to long-term memory. 7. Study for the quiz! The way to study for a quiz is not to just read over the notes. DO problems!!! For more information about your rights and responsibilities consult your Southwest Student/Parent Handbook Academic Integrity: Plagiarism/Consequences It is expected that members of this class will observe strict policies of academic honesty and will be respectful of each other. Any instances in which cheating, including plagiarism and unauthorized use of copyrighted materials, computer accounts, or someone else s work is determined, will be referred to Student Services and will be investigated to its full extent. Helping someone else to cheat will be dealt with the same way. See page 10 of the Southwest Handbook. 5
