COURSE INFORMATION Course Name: 6 th Grade Mathematics Course Description: SpringBoard Morse Marshall is one of six schools in MPS to adopt the SpringBoard curriculum for Math and English. SpringBoard is the foundational component for the College Board's College Readiness System, offering a proven Pre-AP program that increases participation and prepares a greater diversity of students for success in AP, college and beyond without remediation. TI MathForward At Morse Marshall, all middle school students are a part of the TI MathForward program. This allows students to investigate mathematical concepts through a graphing calculator. At the beginning of every math class, your child will log-in to the calculator and complete learn checks (a 3 question warmup). Then throughout the lesson, students will complete quick polls (checks for understanding) and investigate in the activity center (an interactive approach to apply concepts). Number Operations SCHOOL SYLLABUS Course Objectives: In 6 th grade, we will begin to: Apply the critical thinking skills needed to be proficient and successful for AP courses in high school. Emphasize higher-order thinking skills that challenge them to aim higher and achieve more Help them personalize and own their learning Encourage self-exploration and the application of learning strategies that work best for them as individuals State Standards: The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. EXPECTATIONS Classroom/School Expectations: Please see the 6 th grade Family Information Letter that was given on the first day of school. Tardy Policy Objective: Students will arrive on time for class, focused and prepared to learn. The classroom is the most important place for students to be. It is imperative that your child arrives on time to class.

3 Tardy Policy Procedures: 1. Students who arrive to class late will be admitted to class and marked late by the classroom teacher. 2. Students who are more than 5 minutes late for class will receive a phone call home from the teacher to inform parents of this behavior, and the teacher will document tardiness in ESIS notes. 3. Students who receive 2 phone calls for tardiness will be referred to an administrator for after school detention. 4. On the last day of each week, administration will identify students who have been late to class 3 or more times within the week. Those students will receive a parent letter informing of them of the tar dies. Discipline will proceed as follows: a. First Offense = Warning and Communication to Parent b. Second Offense = Detention, Tardy List, and Communication to Parent c. Third Offense = Detention, Tardy List and Communication with Parent d. Fourth Offense = In House Suspension, Tardy List, Communication with Parent and Loss of Privileges e. Fifth Offense TBD by Administration 5. Students who are listed on the tardy list will not be allowed hall passes for the following week of school. BE RESPONSIBLE! MATERIALS FOR COURSE/RESOURCES SpringBoard Middle School Math 1 student book SpringBoard Online will be discussed with students once it is ready to be used by the entire school. Every student will be given a log-in and password. 1 inch binder (for this class only) Notebook or loose leaf paper Pen or Pencil Morse Marshall agenda COURSE EVALUATION/EVIDENCE Student/parent friendly success criteria (rubrics) for all assessments Students will create a portfolio in class that holds all evidence and some practice of the standards taught/learned in class

4 PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES Everyday your child will be given practice that will be completed in class or at home. Practice is very important for every student to be proficient on the assessments. When practice is due, we will correct the assignment as a class. It is my expectation that every student makes corrections with a purple pen (given) and asks questions if they are confused. I will collect all practice assignments after corrections are made. A practice assignment is only considered Incomplete if there are no corrections made or if the assignment is not complete. It is my belief that we all make mistakes, but what we learn from our mistakes is what makes us stronger. STANDARDS BASED GRADING Students will be graded on their ability to master the standards at their academic level. All student grades will be based solely on summative assessments. You will be provided a bi-weekly update on your child s progress through the online grade book, Parent Assist. If you do not have access to Parent Assist, please sign up in the main office or on the MPS website. This year all report cards will be based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Each student is expected to master the standards taught in their course. Report cards will be provided quarterly (every 9 weeks) which means there will be (4) interim report cards given throughout the school year. The Academic and Effort Scale that will be used to assess student mastery will be as follows: AD Advanced Exceeding grade level expectations Opportunities for work that exceeds grade level expectations must be given. PR Proficient Meeting grade level expectations PR is the goal for all students in all areas by the end of the school year. BA Basic Just below grade level expectations Student is within a year of grade level expectations; student is on the bubble and should be able to reach proficiency with some effort. MI Minimal Far below grade level expectations Student is more than a year behind grade level expectations, student is working to reach proficiency but much additional effort will be needed. All students at Morse-Marshall per district directives will have proficiency grades converted to letter grades for the school year. esis grade book has been set up to make these conversions into letter grades at the end of each quarter.
