MAC 1105 College Algebra 3 Credits Description: The major topics in this course are linear equations and inequalities; quadratic equations and inequalities; relations and functions; graphs; systems of equations and inequalities; exponential and logarithmic functions; and applications. A review of algebraic techniques is also included in this course as well as a review of polynomials, factoring, exponents, roots and radicals. MAC 1102 cannot substitute for this course. Prerequisites: MAT 1033 with a grade of C or better, or satisfactory score on the placement test. Co-requisites: None. Degrees Offered: A.A., A.S., A.A.S.. Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to: 1. Use algebraic techniques, including analytical, numerical, and technology-aided procedures, to solve equations and inequalities. 2. Represent algebraic functions and relations symbolically, graphically, and numerically. 3. Apply algebraic techniques, including analytical, numerical, technology-aided procedures, and modeling techniques to solve real-world situations. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of quantitative literacy in solving mathematical problems.

2 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the application of mathematical principles to other disciplines through real-world applications. Course Outline: I. 3 Scientific or Graphing Calculator: Each student must have his or her own scientific or graphing calculator. Cell phones, IPODs, Palm Pilots, or any other PDAs or communication devices may not be used as calculators. Mr. Moore's preferred calculators are the Texas Instruments TI-83 and TI- 84 series of graphing calculators. MyMathLab Access Code Course Grading System: Grading Scale Grade Percent Points A 90% - 100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F 0% - 59% Grade Weights Weights Points Homework 1/3 (max) 100 Test Average 1/3 (min) 100 Final Exam 1/3 (min) 100 Total 300 FN, I, and, W Grade Policy: FN Grade (Failure due to non-attendance): The FN grade indicates that a student has failed a course due to non-attendance. It is calculated as an F in the student's grade point average. For students receiving financial aid, failure for non-attendance may require the student to refund to the College all or part of his or her aid. The FN grade will be assigned by the faculty member at any time following the final withdrawal date for the course. I Grade (Incomplete): The grade of incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor when the student has completed at least 80% of the course with a passing grade. The student must have a valid excuse with documentation and consult with the instructor before an I grade will be assigned. W Grade (Withdraw): A student may withdraw without academic penalty at the Florida State College from any course up to the last withdrawal date published for each session. Grade Calculation: The course grade will be computed by calculating a weighted average of the Homework grade (0 100), the Test average (0 100), and the Final Exam (0 100). Homework Weight = (1/3) * (percent of homework completed by student) Final Exam Weight = Test Average Weight = (1 Homework Weight) / 2

4 Grade = (HG) * (HW) + (TG) * (TW) + (FG) * (FW) HG = Homework Grade, HW = Homework Weight, TG = Test average grade, TW = Test average Weight, FG = Final Exam Grade, FW = Final Exam Weight State Mandate: Students may repeat a course in an attempt to improve a grade previously earned. State Board Rule 6A limits such attempts to courses where a D, F, or FN grade was earned, and limits to two the number of times a course grade may be forgiven. The official grade and the grade used in calculating the GPA shall be the last grade earned in the course. In other words, a student may not repeat a course for which they have received a C or better. A student may have only three total attempts in any course, including the original grade, repeat grades and withdrawals. Upon the third attempt in a course, the student must be given an A, B, C, D, or F. A fourth attempt may be allowed only through a general appeals process based on major extenuating circumstances. On the 3 rd attempt out-of-state tuition is charged which is about four times the in-state tuition Academic Dishonesty: Students found cheating on any in-class assignment, quiz, test, exam, or other item that Mr. Moore expects the student to work on his or her own will receive a grade of F in the course and procedures for expulsion from the college will be followed. Cheating includes (among other things) copying another individual's work (or allowing someone to copy your work), using unauthorized references (cheat sheets or programmed information) on a quiz, test, or exam, or allowing another individual to take a quiz, test, or exam for you. Course Requirements: Homework: Tests: Homework Options: Choose one of the options below 1. Textbook Homework Option 2. Online Homework Option All homework will be assigned after every section in the textbook and is due at the beginning of the next class session. For more more information on the homework consult the homework information and agreement (separate document) Test Study Guides / Practice Tests: The students will be given study guides / practice tests before every in class exam. The student is to work the study guide and turn in the study guide on the day of the in-class exam. Tests are given through the semester and are scheduled on the course calendar (separate document). Each problem on the test is worth 5 points and the test grade is calculated

5 by taking the number of points the student earned and dividing that by the total possible points, give a score from (0 100). These test grades are averaged and this Test Average is used to calculate the final grade. Final Exam: The Final Exam is proctored comprehensive and is worth 100 points. The final exam is mandatory. Course Policies: Make-up Tests: Make-up Exams are given only in extreme situations. The student must provide copies of the documentation for the reason for missing the exam. The make-up exam will be a completely different exam. If you do not take the make-up test you will receive a grade of zero for that test, which will be used to calculate your final grade. The student must contact Mr. Moore regarding the scheduling of make-up exams. Electronic Devices, Cell Phones, and other communication devices: Cell phones, pagers, and other communication devices must be put into a silent mode and may not be used in the classroom. If the need to utilize such a device arises, then the student must leave the classroom. Cell phones, pagers, and other communication devices may not be used as calculators under any circumstances. Attendance: Students are expected to attend every class, to be on time, and to stay for the entire session. If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to: get the class notes from a fellow student, complete the required homework which will be due, get any needed help on the missed information from either the Learning Center or the instructor (outside of class time). If you are late and missed the roll call get with me after class to notify me of your attendance. I will excuse (not count for the purposes of grades) any student absences for reasons such as: military duty, jury duty, death in the family, and illness. me with the reasons for missing class. Additional Information: Institutional Effectiveness: Student work in this class may be collected by the College for the purpose of assessing institutional effectiveness and measuring general education competencies. The artifacts collected and submitted for this purpose will be done so anonymously. Special Accommodations Disabled students and students needing special accommodations need to contact Robin Nicole Dyer ( ) in Disabled Student Services Children on Campus Policy: No children under the age of 16 will be allowed in instructional areas and no unsupervised children in non-instructional areas during scheduled classes or while testing.
