All homework is to be completed online via the CengageNOW! portal. You will need to familiarize yourself early on with the course tools and especially the equation editor that enables you to input algebraic expressions and data into your homework. There are many useful features to the homework assignment, including step-by-step walkthroughs of the problems and tutorial applets. With the homework assignments, you can complete them as many times as you like within a specified period of time. You may also save your progress and come back to your work later. Be forewarned though that the score earned on a subsequent attempt of a homework assignment, whether higher or lower, will replace the previous homework score. In general, no late assignments will be accepted and if you try to submit a late assignment, the CengageNOW! system will not accept it. For the latest information on due dates and times for homework assignments, please consult the course website. DISCUSSION BOARDS There are seven discussion board assignments in this class. All discussion board assignments will be completed online in the Vista web portal. In general, you will have one week to complete a discussion board assignment. For more information on discussion board assignments, please consult the course website. EXAMS There are six exams in this class. All exams will be completed online in the CengageNOW! web portal. Each exam has a different time limit, so pay attention to the details given out on the course website. FINAL EXAM There will be a comprehensive final exam given out during the last week of class (the week before on-campus finals). This final exam will be available online in the

6 6 CengageNOW! web portal. In order to be eligible to pass the course, you must score at least 60% on the final exam. If you score 60% or above on the final, you will receive your cumulative grade for the course. If you score below 60% on the final, you will receive either a D or an F in the course, depending on your cumulative average. Passing the final, however, does not guarantee a passing grade in the course. GRADING BREAKDOWN The grades will be based on the following weighted average: Vista Discussion Board Entries: 10% CengageNOW! Homework Assignments: 20% CengageNOW! Exams: 40% Final Exam: 30% GRADING SCALE The grading scale is broken down as follows: %: A 80-89%: B 70-79%: C 60-69%: D 59% and below: F GRADES Grades will be posted regularly in the grades tab of the CengageNOW! webportal. VISTA & CENGAGENOW! EXPLANATION Make sure you read through this syllabus carefully and understand what is expected of you in this course. Below I will briefly explain how the different course tools function within Vista and CengageNOW! This explanation should not be considered a replacement for the online training sessions and tutorials provided within the webportals.

Enables you to access assignments and tests Allows you to access multimedia study aids (video lectures, practice tutorials, practice quizzes) to supplement your textbook reading. Discussion board postings (but we will not use this discussion board - all postings will be given in Vista) Now that the basic functions of Vista and CengageNOW! have been explained to you, it s time for you to explore them on your own. ACCESSING ASSIGNMENTS & EXAMS Within the Vista and CengageNOW! webportals, assignments are broken down into the following four categories.

8 8 1) Reading Assignments These will be taken directly from the textbook and supplemented with online materials via the CengageNOW! website. You are expected to read the textbook examples and exercises prior to beginning your homework. Although completing these assignments does not earn you any points, you must complete them before beginning your homework. If you do not complete all of the required reading assignments for the week, you will be denied access to that week s homework. 2) Homework Assignments These are to be completed via the CengageNOW! website. Although assignments will vary in length, they are all worth the same percentage value of your grade. You are allowed as many attempts on a homework assignment during the week that it is due, however your assignment score will be based off of your latest attempt and not the best score. You can also log off and log back on as many times as you like to complete a homework assignment. You can only access these assignments once you have completed all of the required reading assignments for the week. 3) Exams All exams, including the final, will be completed via the CengageNOW! website. You will have only one attempt on each exam, so make sure you set aside the time you need for it and make sure your computer is running on a stable connection. Once you begin an exam, you must complete it during that session. You may not log off and log back on during this time. All exams are of equal weight and will contribute equally to your exam average. In order to access an exam, you must complete the homework assignment for that particular week. You will be notified of the time allotted for each exam in the course website under the assignments and exams section. 4) Discussion Board Postings For each discussion board assignment, you will be required to complete a discussion board posting and respond to someone else s post in the Vista web portal. This activity will be graded on effort, timeliness, and quality of your responses. To access certain assignments, you will need to complete the assignments that come before them. For instance, to access homework assignments, you must first complete all of the reading assignments for that week. To access an exam, you must complete that week s homework assignment. There are no exceptions to this rule. If you do not complete the prerequisite assignments, you may not be able to access certain homework assignments or exams. By maintaining enrollment in this course, you indicate that you agree to and are bound by the terms and conditions of this syllabus, which are subject to change at any time, with or without notice, at the discretion of the instructor.
