1 Summer 2016 Math 125 Intermediate Algebra Section 0179, 5 units Online Course Syllabus Instructor Information Instructor: Yoon Yun yunyh@lamission.edu Phone: (818) MyMathLab: MyMathLab.com Conference Hours: TBA Prerequisite Math 115 with a grade of C or better, or appropriate skill level demonstrated through the Math assessment process, or by permit. Course Description This course will prepare you for the next college-level math class such as Statistics, College Algebra, and Calculus for Business and Social Science. There will be a brief review of concepts learned in Elementary Algebra using more challenging illustrations and examples. New topics include: rational exponents, nonlinear and absolute value inequalities, functions and their graphs, introduction to the conic sections, solving systems of three variables, second-degree systems, and an introduction to exponential and logarithmic functions. General Information Summer Math 125 online class is an 8-week course that combines multimedia lessons along with interactive online learning activities and optional face-to-face learning experience. All students must attend the orientation meeting on June 13, 2016, 4:00-6:00pm in CMS 120. In addition, there are five required class meetings on campus for taking tests and a final exam. Optional review meetings will be offered to help students better prepare for all tests. The course is delivered through MyMathLab, an online interactive educational system. Learning aids including: a series of PowerPoint lecture summaries, tutorial videos, guided Homework exercises, and quizzes are accessible in MyMathLab. All students in Math 125 course need to have a MyMathLab access code to complete all required components to successfully pass the course. You will receive the required MyMathLab course ID via upon enrolling in the course. Please read all the information carefully in this syllabus. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the instructor via or by phone. Textbook & MyMathLab Access Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, by Elayn Martin-Gay, Custom Edition for Los Angeles Mission College, bundled with a MyMathLab access code. All learning resources and assignments that correlate with the textbook are provided in MyMathLab, and therefore, MyMathLab access code is required for all students to complete the course components successfully. If you have taken Math 115 recently at LAMC, you may have bought this book and used MyMathLab to do the online assignments. In that case, you don t need to buy anything for this class. If you didn t buy the book mentioned above, nor used the MyMathLab before, then you may purchase the textbook bundled with the access code from the college bookstore. If you choose not to buy the textbook, you may purchase the access code online through mymathlab.com, and this will give you access to the e-book and the online assignments. Student Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, a successful student will be able to: 1. Solve, graph, and analyze various equations or systems of equations and inequalities. 2. Interpret, graph and analyze various functions. Summer 2016 Calendar and Meeting Schedule This is an 8-week course that begins Monday, June 13 and ends Thursday, August 4. Last day to ADD 8-week classes: Monday, June 20 Last day to drop without receiving a W In person/internet: Monday, June 20 Last day to drop with a W (By Internet Only): Friday, July 22

2 There are six required meetings on campus: one orientation, four tests and one comprehensive final exam. Below is the list of required meeting dates, times, and locations. Optional review meetings will be offered for all tests and the final. You are strongly encouraged to attend these meetings to better prepare for the exams. For summer 2016, all review meetings will be held 2:30-4:00 pm on the same testing dates (listed above). The locations will be announced later. Course Structure The course is divided into 8 weekly modules in MyMathLab. Modules are composed of weekly tasks including various learning resources, assignments, and quizzes, etc. It is students responsibility to complete all course components by the required due dates. The course will follow the attached schedule as closely as possible. Students are expected to spend about hours per week to study the online learning materials and to complete all assignments. Some students may need more time to do well in the course. ONLINE Assignments and Quizzes through MyMathLab In order to access the required homework, quizzes, practice tests and to take the final, students enrolled in Math 125 need to register with MyMathLab online program and enroll in the section with the course ID provided by the instructor. Testing Required Meetings: Orientation: Monday, June 13, :00-6:00 pm Location: CMS 120 Test 1: Tuesday, June 21, :00-6:00 pm Location: CMS 030 Test 2: Thursday, June 30, :00-6:00 pm Location: CMS 030 Test 3: Thursday, July 14, :00-6:00 pm Location: CMS 030 Test 4: Thursday, July 28, :00-6:00 pm Location: CMS 030 Comprehensive Final: Thursday, August 4, :00-6:00 pm Location: CMS 120 & 122 ***All students must bring a photo ID for verification for all meetings. Directions for registering/purchasing the access code are provided in this syllabus. Students are expected to finish their online homework assignments by the due dates. A 25% deduction per day will be implemented for late submission for homework assignments. Since MyMathLab does not grade each step of a student's work, it is important that students write down their solving steps clearly on a notebook in order to identify mistakes. Students are allowed to take the online quizzes with multiple attempts before the due date. The highest quiz score from all attempts will be recorded. However, no extensions will be granted for online quizzes. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. There will be four tests containing all free response questions. The testing schedule is given in the timeline at the end of this syllabus. The lowest exam score will be dropped and there will be no make-up exams. A comprehensive final exam will be given on Thursday, August 4, There are no make-ups for the final exam. For all tests, all work must be shown in a logical manner with easy to follow steps to support any written responses for credits. A sample test will be posted for your practice. You are allowed to use a stand-alone scientific calculator on tests. Cellular phones, IPod, IPad, and graphing calculators are not allowed on exams. Students are not allowed to use notes during tests and final. All tests and final exam are scheduled and proctored in the required meetings. A stand alone scientific calculator is allowed on all tests. Students are not allowed to use notes during tests and final. Cell phones and all electronic devices must be turned off or on silent mode and kept out-of-sight during all tests and final exam. For all tests including the final, in-person review sessions will be offered to help students be better prepared. These review meetings are optional, but students are strongly encouraged to attend. Grading Percentage Distribution Assigned Grade Online Homework 15% % A Online Quizzes 11% 80-89% B In class Tests 48% 70-79% C Final 26% 60-69% D Below 60% F For borderline cases, level of improvement on the final is considered.

3 Withdrawals and Exclusions If there is no online activity including no homework submissions in MyMathLab for a week, you will be excluded from the class. You are expected to log into MyMathLab site several times a week. It is still your responsibility to drop the class officially if you decide not to continue with the class. If you stop attending the class (or wish to drop a class), you must drop the class yourself officially on or before July 22, 2016 (by internet only). Failure to do so may result in a grade of F in the class. A new state policy in effect as of 2012 limits students to three attempts per course. Receiving a grade or a "W" for a course counts as an attempt, regardless of when the course was taken. Withdrawal by the deadline to avoid a "W" will not count as an attempt. For spring 2016, the deadline to avoid a W is Monday, June 20, The procedures for dropping classes are detailed on page 58 of the Los Angeles Mission College Catalog. All students appearing on the grade roster at the end of the semester will receive a grade. Tools A scientific calculator is required. Graphing calculators, cell phones, and other forms of hand held computers are not allowed during in-class tests and final. Cheating Any form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If any students caught cheating, for example, any work that is not the student s or that the student has allowed others to copy, will receive an automatic F for the assignment or the course. The event will be reported to the Math Department Chair who will forward the report to the VP of student services for disciplinary action. Student Conduct Students are expected to adhere to all school policies, and to abide by the standards of student conduct as described in the Los Angeles Mission College Catalog on page 62 to 64.
