1 Online Course Syllabus MT201 College Algebra Important Notes: This document provides an overview of expectations for this online course and is subject to change prior to the term start. Course Description Prerequisites Course Outcomes Course Outline Required Course Materials Grading Criteria Assignments Course Description This course emphasizes: 1) using the properties of real and complex numbers, 2) applying algebraic notation and operations, 3) understanding the theory of solving various types of equations and inequalities, 4) graphing various functions, 5) applying equations and functions to problem solving, and 6) working with matrices. Prerequisites None Course Objectives Upon completion of the course, you should know and be able to: Use exponents and radicals Use algebraic techniques to simplify mathematical expressions

2 Employ linear and quadratic equations and inequalities in the solution of practical problems Use of functions and the construction of their graphical representations to solve problems Evaluate and use exponential and logarithmic equations and understand their relationship Perform elementary operations on matrices and understand basic matrix algebra. Course Outline MT201 - College Algebra has four major components: 1. Weekly reading assignments (which may include practice problems) 2. Weekly Forum participation in Class Discussion and Class question activities 3. Weekly problem sets 4. Weekly exams These components are based on an eight week design, with one major learning topic completed each week. The course lasts eight weeks. There will naturally be some overlap in assignments from week to week. You will often be working on the next module, while your instructor is reviewing materials from the previous week. But do not fall behind! Eight weeks go by like the wind, and before you know it, you're done. Required Course Materials Required: Aufmann, Richard N., Venron C. Barker and Richard D. Online Course Assignments MT201 Week: This section provides an overview of the weekly requirements for your course. Course Dynamics This course is organized around an eight-week program. Weekly outcomes, assignments, and critical information are organized week-by-week. Typically, each week includes reading assignments, practice problems, forum submittals, a problem set, and an exam. An online course is not a self-paced program. There are weekly deadlines which must be met. Online weeks correlate to a 7-day work week. Each week's work begins on a Monday. Week One begins on the first day of the term, which is always a Monday. Beginning each Monday, start the reading assignments, including the information found in the Week-by-Week section and the textbook. Understanding this critical information is essential to successfully completing your weekly assignments and exam.

4 Forum By Wednesday of each week, participate in the Forum discussions. By Saturday of each week, read other student postings and post responses when appropriate. Your facilitator will provide you with the expectations he/ she has for these activities. Problem Sets Submit your solutions by the date specified by your facilitator but no later than midnight Sunday. It is suggested that you submit your answers by Friday so that you have time to review the correct solutions before taking the exam at the end of the week. You are expected to submit your own unique solutions to these problems, not solutions solicited from other people. Exams Exams are due by midnight on Sunday. Week1 Fundamental Concepts 1.
