1 Fall Semester 2015 Santiago Canyon College: Mathematics & Sciences Division (Room SC-210) MATH 80: Intermediate Algebra (Section Number 10247) Tuesday & Thursday 10:30 am-1:00pm (Room SC-110) Instructor: Vanessa Jones Phone: (714) Jones Office: D Office Hours: Monday & Wednesday 1:30pm-2:30pm Tuesday & Thursday 8:30am-10:00am Text: Intermediate Algebra by Sullivan & Struve 3rd Edition Material Needed: You should have the following with you at all class meetings. 1) scientific calculator (no cell phones or other multi-purpose devices) 2) pencil or pen 3) eraser, white out, or correction tape 4) lined and graph paper 5) binder to organize your homework, quizzes and tests I highly recommend at least 3 different colored pencils, pens, markers or highlighters for this class. I use a lot of color coding during lectures, and many students find this very helpful. Prerequisite: Mathematics N60 or placement into Mathematics 080 on the Mathematics level 2 placement exam and a course equivalent to Mathematics 060. Course Description: A second course in algebra that includes systems of equations: inequalities, graphs and functions; radicals, quadratic polynomials, rational expressions; exponential and logarithmic functions, problem solving. Grading: Exam 1 15% Exam 2 15% Exam 3 15% Exam 4 15% Final 20% Quizzes 10% Homework 10% Point Range Letter Grade 90%-100% A 80%-89% B 70%-79% C 60%-69% D Below 60% F

2 Homework: Textbook homework will be collected a class meeting after each chapter is completed. You will be given a homework list and instructions on how to format your homework. Homework not meeting the specified format will receive a zero. Assignments will be short, but will cover the material presented. Homework is a learning tool. If quiz and test scores are low, it is an indication that more homework should be done beyond what is assigned. In addition, you will also be assigned reflection papers to be completed in paragraph format. These are based on readings and videos in this class and are meant as way to allow you to think about different aspects of the learning process. Late homework is NOT accepted, but your lowest homework score will be dropped. Quizzes: Quizzes will cover material from the last couple of class meetings but may contain older material. Quizzes are open notes, closed book, and individual (no sharing notes or talking). There are no makeup quizzes, but the lowest quiz score will be dropped. Exams: There will be 4 exams given this semester. See the schedule for tentative dates. They are representative of homework problems and problems from your notes. Each test is worth 15% of your grade, and collectively they account for 60% of your grade. There are no makeup exams. If the lowest exam score is between 25% and 70% and all other exam scores are above 70%, then a score of 75% or higher on the final exam will replace the lowest exam score. Final Exam: The final will be cumulative and will be given on the last class meeting. In addition, 10% of your final exam score comes from a final reflection paper, which will be handed out during the 14th week of the semester. The final is worth 20% of your grade and possibly 35% if it is used to replace the lowest exam score. See above for details. There is no makeup final exam. Exam Rules: If any of the following rules are broken, you will earn a zero on that exam. 1. Do NOT look other students desks or paper(s). 2. Do NOT share supplies, which include calculators, writing instruments, and paper. 3. All electronic devices must be turned off and stored out of sight. 4. Do NOT talk to any student (you may ask me questions though). 5. You may NOT leave the classroom for any reason. 6. You may NOT use notes or books for any exam. 7. I do NOT grade scratch paper, so all work MUST be included in the space provided. Supplemental Instruction: Supplemental Instruction is available for this course to assist students in better understanding the course material. The SI program provides peer-facilitated study sessions led by qualified and trained undergraduate SI leaders who attend classes with students and encourage students to practice and discuss course concepts in sessions. Sessions are voluntary and open to all students in this course who want to improve their understanding of the material, as well as their grades. SI sessions will focus on the most recent material covered in class and sometimes exam review. 3 The Math Activities Resource Center: The Math Study Hall (a.k.a. MaSH) is a service provided by SCC that provides students with supplemental learning to the classroom. A math faculty member or an instructional assistant is always on duty to assist students with questions or concerns from their math class. Additionally, computers are available for students to access mathematical software or complete internet-based assignments for a math class. The MaSH is located in room U-80. The hours of operation for Fall 2015 are as follows. August 24-December 10 Monday through Thursday: 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To utilize the MaSH, you must enroll in Math 80L, Section This is a Pass/No Pass, Open Entry/Open Exit lab course. You will need to complete at least 10 hours and 2 study-skill activities in the MaSH within the 16-week semester to earn 0.2 units with a grade of Pass (P). Note, if you have to drop the class, be sure to drop the lab also to avoid a No Pass (NP) in the lab. Note, students are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Math 80L to review, enhance and/or advance students knowledge of mathematics based on their individual need in [beginning/elementary/intermediate] algebra. Attendance is tracked through the sign-in computer so when entering the MaSH, have the assistant slide your student ID card or type in your ID number at the sign-in computer (do not use your SSN, it will not work). When leaving, sign out the same way you signed in; signing out is critical in order to avoid losing any hours completed. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Alicia Frost at Help: I am here to make sure you learn and understand the material. It is your job to let me know when you are having difficulties. Furthermore, it is your job to complete all homework assignments and study at least 15 hours a week. If you fail to prepare, there is nothing I can do to help you. I will do my part by presenting material in a clear and concise manner and answering questions in class, during office hours, and via s. This is a team effort, and we must both do our part in order for you to be successful. Please don t let me down. Messages: I answer s Monday through Thursday. If I receive an by 1pm, I respond to it by 2:30pm that day. I sometimes check my messages Friday through Sunday, but please do not expect a response until Monday if you send it after 1pm on Thursday. I will not respond to s or phone messages regarding homework due dates or homework assignments. It is your responsibility to be in class and obtain that information. Student Learning Outcomes: Students who successfully complete Math 080 should be able to perform the following. 1) Read, define and apply algebraic and functional vocabulary and symbols. 2) Evaluate, perform algebraic operations and solve equations involving linear, rational, radical, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic expressions. 3) Set up and solve word problems involving linear, quadratic, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic expressions, or systems of linear equations in two or three variables. 4) Graph linear, quadratic, absolute value, power, exponential and logarithmic functions, and apply graphing transformations.

4 Department Student Learning Outcomes: Students who successfully complete any mathematics course at SCC should be able to perform the following. 1) Create mathematical models of real world phenomena, apply those models to make predictions about the behavior of the phenomena, apply appropriate problem solving techniques, and critically evaluate the veracity of the obtained results. 2) Clearly communicate mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills using a variety of formats, diverse technologies, and appropriate mathematical vocabulary and notation. 3) Integrate into educational and professional conduct a calm, confident, and ethical approach to mathematical reasoning and problem solving while taking personal responsibility for mathematical successes. Title IX Policy: Santiago Canyon College (SCC) faculty are committed to supporting our students and upholding gender equity laws as outlined by Title IX. Therefore, if a student chooses to confide in a member of SCCs faculty regarding an issue of sexual misconduct, that faculty member is obligated to tell SCCs Title IX Coordinator. If a student does not wish to formally report an incident to a faculty member but wishes to speak to someone confidentially about an unwelcome sexual encounter, the student can speak to the College Psychologist who is not legally bound to report the conversation. The College Psychologist is located in the Student Health & Wellness Center in T-102 or call (714) Academic Accommodation for Disabilities: Students with disabilities who want to request academic accommodations are responsible for informing their instructors and Disabled Stu- dents Programs and Services (DSPS) as early in the semester as possible, or at least two weeks before the accommodation is needed. To have accommodations authorized, students must provide DSPS with verification of disability and meet with a DSPS professional for an evaluation of needs. Students may schedule a DSPS appointment by coming to the DSPS Office in E-105, by phoning us at (714) or by ing us at Academic Honesty Policy: Academic dishonesty or cheating is defined as an intentional act of fraud in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work of efforts of another without authorization. This includes assisting other students in acts of dishonesty or coercing students into acts of dishonesty, whether it is in coursework or on exams. There is absolutely NO tolerance for cheating in this class. Any student caught cheating or assisting another student in the act of cheating, will receive an F grade for the assignment and possibly the class. The Absence/Drop policy: The SCC College Catalog reads as follows: A student may be dropped for excessive absences when the total hours of absence exceed 10% of the total scheduled hours of the class. A student may also be dropped by the instructor when not appearing at the first class meeting. I will drop any student who is absent during the add period or misses 10% of scheduled class meetings. In addition, being tardy or leaving early is equivalent to half an absence. Student Conduct: All students are responsible for maintaining appropriate conduct while enrolled in classes through the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD). Guidelines for student conduct are set forth in the RSCCD Standards of Student Conduct policy. Detailed information regarding student discipline and rights within this policy is available in the college catalog and student handbook. Students who violate the Standards of Conduct are subject to disciplinary action which includes, but is not limited to, warnings, removal from class, probation, suspension and expulsion from all classes and activities within the district. All students will be in violation of the code should you become disruptive in any way, such that you disrupt the teaching of this class. This includes excessive talking with your peers, cell phone usage (texting too), and music devices (earphones too). Penalties that may be invoked include Warnings, Probation and Suspension from all classes and activities within the district.
