Michael Sinclair voice mail: ext COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for students majoring in Business, Psychology or other Social or Life Sciences. It is also designed for those students whose last math course is College Algebra. The course competencies includes analysis and interpretation of the behavior and nature of functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, power, absolute value, and piecewise-defined functions; systems of equations, modeling and solving real world problems. Additional topics may include matrices, combinatorics, sequences and series, and conics. PREREQUISITES: Grade of C or better in MAT120, or MAT121, or MAT122, or equivalent, or satisfactory score on district placement exam. STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE TO: Know and adhere to the information contained in this syllabus. Know and adhere to the college policies included in the college catalog and the student handbook. ATTENDANCE: You are to be in class every day it is scheduled. You may be dropped from the class after three absences. You are expected to be in class on time. You are expected to stay the full length of class once you come to class. Arriving to class late or leaving class early can be counted as an absence. If you have a legitimate need to leave class early, please notify the instructor before class starts. If you miss a class, you are responsible for all missed notes, concepts and assignments. Check with your classmates for anything you may have missed. WITHDRAWING FROM CLASS: If you wish to withdraw from this class, it is your responsibility to initiate the withdrawal process. Non-attendance does not automatically result in a student being withdrawn from the course. Do not assume that you will receive a W if you stop coming to class. Any student who takes the Final Exam will not be granted a W for the course. COURSE GRADING: Ranges: A: 90%-100%, B: 80%-89%, C: 70%-79%, D: 60%-69%, F: 0%-59% 20% of final grade: Homework, Quizzes, Class Activities, etc. 60% of final grade: Exams 20% of final grade: Final Exam (comprehensive) CALCULATOR: A graphing calculator is required for this course. The TI-83+ or TI-84+ are strongly recommended. Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those which do symbolic algebra (such as the TI-92 or TI89s) may not be used during class activities, quizzes or exams. Your cell phone may not be used as a calculator during class. You are expected to bring your graphing calculator to each class session. For class activities, quizzes and exams it will vary, at the instructor s discretion, whether or not you will be permitted to use your calculator. Sharing of a calculator during quizzes or exams is not permitted. You will be expected to work the same type of problem with and without a calculator. The Media Center, located in Information Technology Services, has Calculators available for the Semester. Cost is $10.00 cash/check only; students need to bring a printout of their Summer schedule and a Photo ID.

2 2 COMPUTER ACCESS and You will need regular access to a computer in order to complete online assignments. If you do not have a computer at home, you can use the computers on the SCC campus. You will also need a valid address, one that you (and only you) check regularly. STUDENT WORKBOOK: College Algebra, Scottsdale Community College, 3 rd Edition, 2013, Student Workbook. The Student Workbook is required for this class. You are expected to bring your Student Workbook to each class session. Keep it in a three ring binder. Students have the following options for obtaining the Student Workbook: Purchase a printed copy of the Student Workbook from the SCC Bookstore (recommend) or Download for free and print from the online homework site we will be using. HOMEWORK: We will be utilizing an SCC s internet online system called SCC IMathAS for online homework. The homework site is located at Instruction for registering into the site is attached. If you have not registered into the site by the end of the first week, you may be dropped from the class. When working a problem, if you are unsuccessful after three attempts, click on Try another similar question, if you are successful, you will receive credit for the problem. A class calendar will be provided that identifies the due dates for homework assignments. The due dates are also indicated within MathAS. After the due dates, each homework lesson can be utilized for review practice. At Intro click on the triangle. Lesson 0a deals with entering answers into the MathAS problems. Lesson 0b are review questions. If you have difficulty with any of the questions, you might consider reviewing your previous course work. Both Lesson 0a and Lesson 0b are optional and are not included in your class grade. ONLINE LESSONS: Utilize the Online Lessons as a learning resource. The Online Lessons with videos are located at the SCC s internet online system, SCC IMathAS, They include quizzes to test your understanding of the material being presented. Whenever you leave a lesson or return to a previous page, it looses your previous work. Write down your answers as you complete each problem and note which answers were correct. TEXTBOOK: The textbook for this class is not required. A textbook that can be utilized as an online reference is College Algebra, Scottsdale Community College, 1 st Edition OER The book is an Open Source Document. Download for free from the online homework site we will be using. QUIZZES, WORKSHEETS and In-Class ASSIGNMENTS: Expect announced and unannounced quizzes, in-class assignments, and worksheets. There is no makeup for missed quizzes, in-class assignments and worksheets, you will get zero points. EXAMS: Exams will involve a mix of mechanical skills and conceptual reasoning. You are expected to take exams at the scheduled time. If an emergency arises that is beyond your control, you must contact the instructor in person or via or voic on the day of the scheduled exam or prior to the day of the scheduled exam in order to be eligible for a make-up. Makeup exams are at the instructor s discretion and will be considered only for verifiable and/or documented reasons. If the instructor considers the reason significant enough for missing an exam, arrangements will be made for taking an equivalent or more difficult exam than the one missed by a specified time and date, otherwise a zero will be recorded for the exam.

3 FINAL EXAM: The Final Exam is comprehensive. You must take the exam on the last day of class. 3 MATH/SCIENCE TUTORING CENTER: The Math/Science Center, located in CM441, is a great place to work on math assignments and get help as needed. Utilize the Tutoring Center, especially before it is too late, and several days before any exams. All services are free and on a walk-in basis. DISABILITY RESOURCES and SERVICES: College policy requires that students with documented disabilities be provided with reasonable accommodations to assist them in the learning environment. GENERAL REMARKS: Cell phones and other electronic devices are to be turned off and put away before the start of class. Use of cell phones and other electronic devices during class is considered disruptive behavior. This includes text-messaging. If you have an emergency situation, let me know before class begins. Assume that you are responsible to learn all of the material in each assigned section. Your work should be neat and easily followed. For the most part, answers without work are unacceptable. Your work is your justification for your answers. No credit should be expected for work that is nonexistent, incoherent, or incorrect, regardless of the answer. Networking outside of class with other students and doing homework together is encouraged, but make sure your paper reflects your own work. The classroom is an educational learning environment where students are expected to engage in behaviors which are conducive to their own learning and the learning of their peers. To facilitate this, respect for self and others is mandatory and necessary. Should a student exhibit disruptive behavior and/or use profane language to the extent that it interferes with the learning environment, an academic consequence may be imposed. Any student found by a faculty member to have committed academic misconduct may be subject to the following academic consequences: Warning A notice in writing to the student that the student has violated the academic code. Grade Adjustment Lowering of a score on a test or assignment. Discretionary Sanctions Additional academic assignments determined by the faculty member. Course Failure Failure of a student from a course where academic misconduct occurs. 4 4 Consider the Challenge: Are you able, on your own (w/o tutors, solutions manuals, examples, etc.) to accurately solve the problems given as homework? I hope you have a very enjoyable and successful semester. COURSE COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES: 1. Analyze and interpret the behavior of functions, including end behavior, increasing and decreasing, extrema, asymptotic behavior, and symmetry. 2. Solve polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic equations analytically and graphically. 3. Find real and complex zeros of polynomial functions analytically and graphically. 4. Graph polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, power, absolute value, and piecewise-defined functions. 5. Determine domain and range of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, power, absolute value, and piecewise-defined functions. 6. Use transformations to graph functions. 7. Perform operations, including compositions, on functions and state the domain of the resulting function. 8. Determine whether a relation is a function when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 9. Determine whether a function is one-to-one when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 10. Determine the inverse of a relation when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 11. Classify functions by name when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 12. Determine regression models from data using appropriate technology and interpret results. 13. Read and interpret quantitative information when presented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 14. Justify and interpret solutions to application problems. 15. Compare alternative solution strategies. 16. Calculate and interpret average rate of change. 17. Model and solve real world problems. 18. Solve systems of three linear equations in three variables. 19. Solve systems of linear inequalities. 20. Communicate process and results in written and verbal formats.
