1 MATH 1314 College Algebra Departmental Syllabus Fall 2010 Catalog Description MATH College Algebra (330) This course is a study of solutions to equations and inequalities, algebraic functions and graphs, theory of equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. Additional topics for discussion include systems of equations and matrices. An instructorapproved graphing calculator will be required. Prerequisites: High school Algebra II and an appropriate placement test score or Math Students who have between 230 and 269 on the math portion of the THEA test should take MATH 0308 or obtain special permission from the mathematics department chairperson. F, Sp, Su ( ) Textbook and Resources College Algebra, Graphs and Models, 4 th Ed, by Bittinger/Beecher/Ellenbogen/Penna, AddisonWesley. An access code to My Math Lab website is required. Course Intent This course is intended for those students majoring in a variety of fields that require further study in mathematics. College Algebra will satisfy the mathematics requirements for students majoring in liberal arts or technical fields. This course will also help students attain logical thinking and problem solving skills. Scope of the Course Unit 1: Introduction to graphing, linear equation and inequalities, linear functions, and applications. Unit 2: Basic functions, algebra of functions, transformations, and variation. Unit 3: Solving various types of equations and inequalities, analyzing quadratic functions, and applications. Unit 4: Graphing polynomial functions, theory of equations, graphing rational functions, and solving inequalities. Unit 5: Exponential and logarithmic functions. Learning Outcomes and Exemplary Educational Objectives The successful student in this course will be able to: 1. solve linear and quadratic equations and inequalities with applications. (I, II, V, VII) 2. model and explore graphs using technology. (I, II, II, IV, V, VI) 3. write the equations of lines and circles given information about their graphs. (II, III, V) 4. organize and analyze data using technology. (I, II, II, IV, VI) 5. graph simple equations and basic functions. (II) 6. identify, explain, and illustrate transformations of basic functions such as shifting, reflecting, compressing, and stretching. (II, III, V) 7. apply the concept of a function. (I, III, V) 8. solve other types of equations such as quadratic form, radical, and absolute value equations. (II, V) 9. graph quadratic, polynomial, radical and rational functions. (II, V) 10. identify and list the real and complex solutions of polynomial equations using various theorems and processes including technology. (II, IV, VI) 11. solve exponential and logarithmic equations with applications. (I, II, III, V, VII) 12. solve systems of linear and nonlinear equations with applications. (I, II, III, V, VII) Learning Activities and Assessment Students will attend and participate in lectures and group work, do homework on paper, and do online activities (homework and/or quizzes). Student outcomes will be assessed by a combination of some or all of the following: homework grades, quiz grades, major exam grades, and a comprehensive final exam. To use appropriate technology to enhance mathematical thinking and understanding and to solve mathematical problems and judge the reasonableness of the results. V. To interpret mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables and schematics, and draw inferences from them. VI. To recognize the limitations of mathematical and statistical models. VII. To develop the view that mathematics is an evolving discipline, interrelated with human culture, and understand its connections to other disciplines.

Additional topics for discussion may include matrices, sequences and series, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem and partial fractions. An instructorapproved graphing calculator will be required. Note about Online Format: Because this is an online course, much of your coursework will be completed on your own schedule while meeting due dates. This will require you to be disciplined enough to do the work without an instructor standing over you. You should spend at least as much time working through these materials per week as you do in other college courses. Getting behind in this course can significantly hinder your ability to succeed. My role as your
4 instructor will be one primarily of facilitator. In other words, I ll be here to answer your questions, provide your learning and testing materials, and monitor your progress. Otherwise, your learning is up to you. Required Texts and Other Materials:  Bittinger, Beecher, Ellenbogen, Penna. College Algebra, Graphs & Models, 4 th ed.  MyMathlab software with student access code. The course ID is: Verheyden _ The 5 digits will fill in the blanks and will change each semester. User needs a variety of plugins installed from  Graphing calculator required. (Instructor uses a TI83 and TI84Plus)  Videos of all the lectures are available to students either as streaming media or as a CD. If you have access to a fast internet connection, then you can view each lecture video from the streaming media link on my faculty website. This website address is: If you do NOT have access to a fast internet connection, then you need to purchase the CD of lecture videos which correspond to the lecture notes for the course, but also include the voice explanation. These are available at the Kilgore College bookstore next to the textbooks in the distance learning section.  PC or Apple computer that is fairly new with a relatively high speed internet connection preferred.  Web browser Internet Explorer or Firefox (preferred). ANY POPUP BLOCKERS MUST BE DISABLED IN ORDER TO VIEW MATERIAL THAT WILL BE DOWNLOADED.  A large, selfaddressed, stamped, envelope must be sent to the instructor for each item you want returned to you. You may mail the envelopes with your assignments if you wish, or you may send several at once at the beginning of the semester. Supplemental Materials Available  Lecture notes from my class of College Algebra on Kilgore College campus will be posted on my web site for each section covered in the text. These notes will be saved as pdf files from my lectures on a SMART board in my day class here at Kilgore College. Online students are free to access these notes by downloading them from my website at Also, note that the streaming media can be accessed from this same web site.  Students can purchase a set of CD s provided by the publisher of the digital video tutor. The digital video tutor is also available through mymathlab online, but will be extremely slow to download for those with dialup. Students may buy directly from the Pearson Education website with address: Course Compass License: You are not to use the access information originally owned by someone else. Course Compass/MyMathLab subscriptions are not transferable. This violates the license agreement: 3. Use of the Information and Materials of the Website The license granted herein is nonexclusive, personal to you and nontransferable. The license is determined by the type of subscription being created through a Preassigned Activation ID/Password or through online purchase. The type of license and the access authority to which it applies is described in Sections College/University Student/Individual Subscriptions. The license granted herein is for single user access to resources developed for students to use in conjunction with course assignments and for selfstudy, selfassessment purposes. One User ID and Password with student authority is issued for the subscriber s use/ this User ID/Password man not be shared.
5 Using someone else s information to gain entry into the Course Compass companion course violates the copyright laws. You will be reported for FTCC Honor Code disciplinary action. Daily Assignments: Assignments are listed under the Course Documents tab of Course Compass. These will include: online homework corresponding to each section of the book online quizzes over one or more sections for each chapter worksheets over particular sections that cannot be graded online All of the online quizzes will be graded as part of your homework percentage. Although all of the online homework is necessary for learning the material, only some of the online homework will be submitted for a grade as part of the homework percentage. These will be noted in each chapter. The worksheets will be graded by hand. Each of these will count twice in the homework percentage. (See the due dates for all online quizzes, online homework, and worksheets in the weekly schedule planner and on the course calendar). Discussion Board: The Discussion Board feature of Course Compass will be used during the course. This can be accessed under the Communications tab. Students are expected to read and respond to items posted on the Discussion Board each week. Some weeks will be open for questions, while other weeks will have specific problems to be worked and discussed. Other assignments might be made through the Discussion Board as the semester progresses. This Discussion Board component of the course will be graded subjectively based on each student s participation and will count as 10% of the final average. Projects: There will be a graphing calculator project for each chapter. These will count as extra points (from 4 to 8 points) on each of the major tests. (See due dates in the weekly schedule planner and on the course calendar). Submitting Assignments and Projects: Online quizzes must be taken within a certain time frame and have specific due dates. You will have until midnight of the due date to respond with the answers. Failure to respond in the time allotted will result in a grade of 0. Once you begin the quiz, you must finish it. Each quiz will be available unlimited times, and only the best score will be counted. You can access the answers only after the due date. All work, other than online homework and online quizzes, may be submitted to me by hand at my office, faxed, mailed to Kilgore College, or ed through Course Compass. Remember, the US mail takes a few days. I must receive work on or before the day that it is due. Please include your name and course number on all document submitted. Do not miss a due date or wait until too late. If you are working on an online quiz or homework close to midnight of the due date you will be cut off at midnight whether you are finished or not. Even late work caused by technological problems will not be accepted. PLEASE do not procrastinate! If you encounter any computer problems during the semester, you are to contact me immediately by or telephone.
6 Note: I cannot open Works files or Wordperfect files. For , use rtf format. If this attaching option fails, then just copy and paste your work into the message itself; this option always works. Use only gifs and jpgs to send scanner work. Be sure to include your name and course within all documents. Tests: There will be a major test over each of the first 4 chapters. The first 3 tests will be administered at the Testing Center on the Kilgore College campus. Each test will be given in 2 parts: one part to be taken using a graphing calculator and one part without. Tests must be taken on one of the days scheduled. (See test dates in the weekly schedule planner and on the course calendar). You must call the Testing Center ( ) to request a time for your test AT LEAST 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE FOR whichever day you choose. You will be required to show your student ID or some form of picture ID at the Testing Center. If you desire to take your tests at the Testing Center on KC Longview campus, you must notify me at least two weeks in advance of the first test date. I will need to send your tests to Longview and this will take extra time. You also must call the Longview Center ( ) to request a time for your test ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE for whichever day you choose. The fourth test will be administered online. This test must be accessed with a password only on one of the two days it is scheduled. Once it becomes available, you will have until midnight of the due date to respond with the answers. Failure to respond in the time allotted will result in a grade of 0. Once you begin the test, you must finish it. It will be available only one time. Arrangement for off campus proctored exams must be made at the beginning of the semester. The proctor and location must be approved by me. The final exam will be administered during final exam week in the Engineering Science Building on the Kilgore College campus.
