Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Math 99 or higher, or Placement Test. Textbook: College Algebra, 3rd edition, 2013 (Free open content book) Authors: Dr. Stitz and Dr. Zeager Available for free at: We will also use the free open source MyOpenMath for the online part of the class: which is accessible directly from our Blackboard page: Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, students will: 1. Solve polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 2. Solve linear and rational inequalities. 3. Solve systems for linear and non-linear equations. 4. Solve applications involving problem-solving skills. 5. Analyze the graphs of various families of functions. 6. Apply the model and characteristics of various families of functions to scenarios in order to solve real-world problems 1

2 Student Learning Outcomes: At the completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify the characteristics of a quadratic function (i.e., vertex, axis of symmetry, and direction of concavity). 2. Compute roots/zeroes of a polynomial function by factoring techniques. 3. Estimate the roots/zeroes of a polynomial function. 4. Solve polynomial inequalities. 5. Solve systems of linear equations using matrices and determinants. 6. Solve systems of linear inequalities. 7. Solve systems of non-linear equations. Rational Functions: 8. Simplify rational expressions using the division algorithm. 9. Identify points of discontinuity of a rational function. 10. Identify vertical/horizontal asymptotes and end behavior of rational functions. 11. Solve rational inequalities. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions: 12. Define exponential and logarithmic functions. 13. Simplify exponential and logarithmic expressions using their properties. 14. Solve exponential and logarithmic equations. 15. Formulate and apply exponential and logarithmic functions to a contextual situation. The following student learning outcomes (characteristics of functions) will be embedded in the study of the family of functions listed above. 16. Identify the domain and range of a function. 17. Determine intervals on which functions are decreasing/increasing, continuous/noncontinuous, or piecewise. 18. Identify functions from multiple sources of information (i.e., verbal descriptions, graphs, equations, and tables of values). 19. Relate the effect of transformations (i.e., translations, rescaling, or reflections) on graphs of functions and their corresponding equations. 20. Perform operations (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) on functions, including the composition of functions. 21. Decompose a function into a composition of two or more functions. 22. Formulate and apply a function to a contextual situation. 23. Determine the conditions under which a function has an inverse. 24. Identify the inverse of a function from multiple representations. 25. Reformulate a given function into various representations (i.e., verbal, graphical, algebraic, or tabular). 2

4 Clientele for the course: This course is intended for students who plan to major in business, mathematics, engineering, and science. Methods of instruction: Face-to-face lectures, problem sessions, classroom discussions, online discussions, online video lectures. Methods of evaluation: Paper homework will be assigned every week. Online homework will be assigned every week. Face-to-face quizzes every week. Online quizzes every week. Two one-hour face-to-face exams. One final exit exam. Grading: The final course grade will be based on: Paper homework Online homework Face-to-face quizzes Online quizzes Exam I Exam II 50 points 50 points 150 points 150 points 100 points 100 points Letter grade equivalence: The final letter grade is given by: A B C D F To pass this course, you must obtain at least 400 points and pass the final exam. Exit Policy: The highest grade a student can receive, scoring less than 40% on the final exam, is D, in which case the student could be allowed, on appeal, to retake a final exam, provided that he/she is doing passing work during the semester. If the student scores better than 40% on the retake exam, the students teacher will recalculate the final grade, based on the teachers policy of student evaluation. Appeal forms are available at the Department. Active Pursuit of the Course: Students must demonstrate the ability to attend classes regularly, be punctual, do homework, quizzes and exams. 4

5 No Show Policy: If a student registered for the course before the start time of the first class period, but did not attend the first 2 classes, or attended only 1 of the first 3 classes and failed to notify the instructor of his or her intentions to continue the class, the Registrars Office will remove the student from the course. Academic integrity: The City Colleges of Chicago is committed to the ideals of truth and honesty. In view of this, students are expected to adhere to high standards of honesty in their academic endeavor. Plagiarism and cheating of any kind are serious violations of these standards and will result, minimally, in the grade of F by the instructor. Classroom Etiquette: Every class contains students who take their education seriously and agree to learn. This can take place only in a classroom atmosphere that has reverence of learning. The following are rights of the instructor: relocating students in the classroom not tolerating any disruptive behavior such as, coming late, leaving early, constant chatter/interrupting, smart talk, etc. requesting security to remove disruptive students from the classroom. At all times when the instructor or a student is speaking it is obvious that everybody else will be doing nothing but listening. Once in class you are expected to be in your seat until the class is dismissed. Food and beverages are NOT permitted in the classroom. Cell phones and headphones are NOT allowed in the classroom. Make-ups policy: There are no make-ups of quizzes regardless of reason for absence. There are no make-ups of any one-hour exam, in case of medical emergency (with doctors note stating that the student was not able to be in class for the exam) the grade for the other one-hour exam will substitute the missed grade. No make-ups of final exam. There are not earlier exams regardless of reason.
