15 2) CONNECTIVE TISSUES a) Characteristics - cells widely spaced - matrix between cells MATRIX = fibers + ground substance FIBERS = collagen (thick, strong & flexible) elastic (thin & very stretchy) GROUND SUBSTANCE = fluid, solid, or semi-solid material - blood vessels are common 15
