Or Puntos de Partida e-book packet w/connect CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Fundamental skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, including basic vocabulary, grammatical structures and culture within a Hispanic, cultural framework. Emphasis on developing speaking skills. Assessment Levels: R3, E3, M1. Course Title: Beginning Spanish I Course Description: Fundamental skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, including basic vocabulary, grammatical structures and culture. Use Spanish vocabulary words. Employ Spanish grammatical Structures. Interpret spoken Spanish. Learning Outcomes Converse in Spanish with fluency and correct pronunciation at appropriate level. Comprehend text written in Spanish. Express ideas in written Spanish. Demonstrate knowledge of some characteristics of Hispanic cultures. 1
2 COURSE OBJECTIVES You can expect to achieve six major objectives by taking this course: an elementary understanding of the grammatical structure of the Spanish language and an elementary communication via listening, oral, reading, and writing skills. You will also be presented with major cultural topics. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Listening: A student should be able to understand most Spanish spoken at a slower than normal pace, some Spanish spoken at a normal pace, and have the skills and coping strategies for filling in gaps when comprehension is not perfect. Speaking: Student should be able to answer and ask questions on a variety of everyday topics, describe people and places, narrate recurring (present) events, and have some ability to narrate past events. Reading: Students should be able to read almost any simple, culturally nonspecific Spanish text and materials written for native speakers. Writing: The writing skills that students develop will usually be similar to their speaking skills in terms of ability to describe, narrate in the present, and so on. Culture: Students will gain a wealth of nearly firsthand knowledge about the various cultures of the Spanish speaking world. The Grammatical Material Vocabulary Material Ser and Estar, most used irregular verbs. Present Tense of regular verbs ending in ar, er, and ir Present tense of common irregular and stem-changing verbs like tener, preferir, hacer, and poder. Articles (definite and indefinite) Adjectives Numbers (cardinal and ordinal) Prepositions Contractions Interrogative Words Expression of Time Gustar to express likes and dislikes Ir + Infinitive ( immediate future) Greetings, Classroom Objects, Family members, Cognates; Academic Subjects, Domestic animals, Days of the week, and telling time; Clothing, Months, Seasons, Colors, Weather Expressions, Descriptions. LANGUAGE LAB The Languages Lab is located in the Coles Classroom Building, Rooms 106 and 108. The Lab provides language instruction to students enrolled in Spanish, French, and German. The lab provides computerized instruction, review materials, and conversational practice. Students can use computers audio players, videos, and camcorders. Lab assistants lead conversational practice groups which emphasize oral interaction and proficiency. You are required up to 1.5 HOURS PER WEEK in the lab. Your lab assignments will be posted on the bulletin board in the lab. You must spend at least ONE Hour a week practicing Speaking Spanish with 2
3 one of the tutors in the lab. You must sign up in the lab for these sessions. You will not be permitted to enter these sessions late. If the tutors schedule allows, you may sign up for additional time. To receive full credit for lab, you must complete all assignments by the due dates listed and spend at least one and one half hours in the lab per week. No make-up hours unless approved by instructor. Besides the CONNECT Online Homework that complements the main text, the Destinos video series will allow you to hear the Spanish language and experience the cultural diversity of Spanish speaking countries. This comprehension approach for the teaching of Spanish will not only help learn good listening and comprehensive skills but will also complement the proficiency approach that we will emphasize in class in order to enhance the student s speaking and writing skills. Speaking sessions, CONNECT, and videos will provide the students with ample opportunity to enhance their Spanish skills and learn Hispanic culture. Attendance will be taken by the language lab supervisor. I, as the instructor, will be provided with a weekly report of your attendance as well as a breakdown of what material (s) you have used during your time in the lab. The language lab may be used as a study area. All language lab requirements are detailed in this handout. Any questions should be addressed to the lab supervisor. An orientation visit to the lab will be afforded to all students the first week of the course and an individual handout will be distributed. SPECIAL SERVICES Students who have a disability which may necessitate an academic accommodation of the use of auxiliary aids and services in a class must initiate the request with the office of Special Services. Special Services offers programs and support services to assist students in overcoming obstacles to education. Offices are located on the East Campus, Room 188, Harvin Center, STUDENT HANDBOOK/CODE OF CONDUCT You are responsible for understanding the College rules regarding academic integrity; you should familiarize yourself with the code of conduct if you have not already done so. In brief, conduct prohibited by the Code of Conduct includes all forms of academic dishonesty, among them copying another student s exam, not permitted collaboration, and representing as one s own work the work of another. COURSE POLICES: Make-up Policy No make-up of exams, homework, papers or presentations will be considered without a excused absence. Oral examinations cannot be made-up. Attendance Regular and punctual class and lab attendance is required. Del Mar College policy dictates that students who miss an accumulated total of more than one week within one semester and whose academic performance is not satisfactory should drop the course. In the event that an absence is absolutely necessary, please contact me or any fellow student to inquire as to where we are (exactly) and what was covered and / or assigned for the upcoming class. This is YOUR responsibility. 3
4 Class Preparation: This is very important! One cannot cram in a language course. You are expected to have worked on the exercises in the text and to have done all applicable assignments before coming to class so that we can use the time in class speaking as much Spanish as possible. Homework 25% portion of your grade. Oral Activities Students will participate in graded oral activities The activities will be done in groups as determined by the instructor. It will consist of an original dialog and role play activity that will be created and performed by the group. You must be present as this activity cannot be made up. Compositions short compositions typewritten double-space no-less-than ½ page in length on the subjects provided by the instructor. COMPOSITION #1 OF 2 Remember, it is to be typewritten, double-spaced, and no less than half a page in length. Being the first composition, you are to tell me about YOU. Namely your history, to include your family, birthplace, education, etc., etc. Hopefully, you won t run out of things to write because, who knows you better that you?. If when you are finished the comp is less that ½ of a page in length it will not be accepted. If you have trouble putting this assignment together, see me. Remember you are to have a coversheet with a full heading to include name date school class section. The second page is dedicated ENTIRELY to the monograph!!! COMPOSITION #2 OF 2 Write two short paragraphs that answer the two sets of questions below. Remember that a paragraph is NOT a list of numbered answers but a connected composition. Use the following connectors to make your composition more interesting and meaningful: por eso, y, aunque, (although) también, luego, and porque. However do not use porque to begin a sentence; use como (since). For example, the two sentences Hace calor and Voy a llevar un traje de baño can be combined in the following ways: Como hace calor, voy a llevar un traje de baño. OR Voy a llevar un traje de baño porque hace calor Paragraph 1: En qué mes piensa ir de vacaciones este año? Qué día va a salir? Adónde va a ir? Con quién(es) va? Cuánto tiempo piensa estar allí? Va a estar en un hotel o en la casa de unos amigos? 4
5 Paragraph 2: Qué tiempo hace allí? Llueve con frecuencia? Nieva mucho? Hay contaminación? Qué ropa piensa llevar? Qué cosa quiere hacer durante el día? Y durante la noche? En qué fecha piensa volver? Vocabulary Quizzes and written assignments There will be some written assignments required throughout the semester. These may include written exercises compositions, and will be announced by your instructor. These must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day they are due. Students who miss the class on which an assignment is due are responsible for making arrangements for submission, prior to class. When students miss a class, it is their responsibility to find out assignments from a classmate. In addition, there will be numerous quizzes throughout the semester, normally one every chapter of Puntos de Partida. No make-up quizzes will be given. Chapter Exams and Final Exam These exams include all material covered up to the date of the exam, and they involve listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and culture. No make-up exams will be given. Because exams must be taken at the time and date for which they are scheduled, students are asked to plan accordingly.
