Level 1 Workbook by Conrad Schmitt Course Description: This course continues instructional areas begun in Spanish I with guided conversations, added emphasis on grammatical forms, an increase in vocabulary, limited composition (carefully supervised), listening for understanding (tapes), and cultural information from reading selections in the basic text. A DVD video series is used for exposure to listening and comprehending in the target language. Course Objectives: By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the content learned in Spanish I while utilizing vocabulary learned. 2. Construct sentences using verbs like gustar to state likes and dislikes. 3. Differentiate usage between the verbs ser and estar. 4. Discuss trips to the doctor s office and pharmacy while utilizing indirect object pronouns.

2 5. Construct sentences using the preterit tense of AR, ER and IR verbs. 6. Recognize irregular verbs in the preterit tense and properly use them in the target language. 7. Recognize and replace direct objects in the sentence with direct object pronouns. 8. Discuss previous vacations in the preterit tense and talk about the weather in the target language. 9. Identify affirmative and negative words and correctly use them. 10. Differentiate usage between the verbs saber and conocer. 11. Utilize demonstrative pronouns with relation to the speaker. 12. Reconstruct sentences using comparatives and superlatives in the target language. 13. Use numbers, currency and dates when discussing shopping trips and birthday trips. Academic Honesty: Any work submitted by the student shall be his/her own. Work taken from others shall be deemed as unacceptable. Any doubts will initiate the completion of an alternative assignment or a zero on the required effort, depending on the severity of the infraction. Class Policies and Expectations: 1. Respect others and their property. (Treat others as you would like to be treated.) 2. Bring all materials to class everyday. You will not leave class to get your materials. The only time you do not need to bring materials to class is if I personally tell you not to bring them. 3. Class will begin after the bell rings. This means that all pencils should be sharpened; class materials and homework should be on your desk and ready to go. 4. Raise your hand and wait until I call on you to speak. Do not talk out. 5. Do not leave your seat without permission. 6. If you have to use the restroom, please do so the first five munutes or the last five minutes of class. If it is an emergency, just raise your hand and ask. There will be a sign out sheet on my desk. Bring your agenda book as you sign out. You cannot leave the room to go anywhere without an agenda book. 7. Please feel free to ask questions when you do not understand something. It is very important that you understand everything especially in the beginning of the year. 8. Homework will be checked at the beginning of each class. If you do not have it, you will be given a zero for that assignment. If you are absent, please turn in your homework when you return to class. It is your responsibility to make up work missed, not mine. Any homework not made up by the allotted time frame, will result in a zero for that assignment. 9. Homework is given 3 4 times per week. It is extremely important to complete all homework as it directly reinforces the material we are learning. 10. If you miss a test, please make up the test as soon as you return to school. You will only have a certain number of days to make up missed tests. This is detailed in the

3 Agenda Book. Any tests or quizzes not made up will result in a zero for that test or quiz. There will be exceptions made for lengthy illnesses. 11. All work (homework included) submitted by the student shall be his/her own work. Work taken from others shall be deemed as unacceptable. Any doubts will initiate a ZERO on the required effort. 12. Extra credit is NEVER given to boost your grade. There are many opportunities throughout the nine weeks grading period to receive bonus points on concepts we are learning, but NEVER to boost your grade at the end of the nine weeks. DON T ASK! 13. Materials Needed for class: Disabilities: Binder 1 ½ 2 - with notebook paper divided into three sections notes, homework, and classwork Folder Writing instrument If you do not have a writing instrument for class, you will not be given one by me. Therefore, any activities that transpire in the class, requiring one, you will not receive any applicable points. If you have a disability that requires special accommodations, you need to notify the teacher no later than the 2 nd week of class. Course Grading Criteria: All quizzes, tests, and projects will be graded according to the Belle Vernon Area School District grading policy. Total points will be accumulated for all evaluated efforts in this class rather than having letter grades per each effort. The grading scale is as follows: A B C D F Emphasis will be on formal assessments. Therefore grades will be weighted in this course. Formal Assessments will account for 90% of a student s grade (quizzes, tests, projects, performance-based rubrics, essays, graded homework, etc.) Informal Assessments will account for 10% of a student s grade (homework for completion, class participation, exit tickets, etc.)

4 Assignments per Quarter: There will be at least 20 homework assignments given during a nine weeks period. There will be a quiz or test given weekly. Online assessments will be used on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with class time given to complete assessment in addition to five to six days outside of class to better assessment scores. Listening exercises will be completed several days per week with a listening assessment completed at the end of each chapter. There will be at least one project given per nine weeks grading period. TOTAL POINTS = 1000 Points (approximate) *Assignments or assessments may vary due to pace of class and individualized instruction. Academic Standards: Students will be reacquainted with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards that have been adopted by the Department of Education, along with the Common Core Standards that are in the process of being implemented nationwide. Students will be made aware of the importance of the standards and the efforts to meet them. Edline: If Grades will be updated every Friday on Edline.
