University of Plymouth The eduroam Wireless Service Windows XP with Service Pack 2 Setup Instructions In this guide you will learn how to: Configure your network connection Connect to the eduroam Wireless Network at the University of Plymouth 1
About the eduroam Roaming Service The University of Plymouth is participating in the eduroam Roaming Service which has developed from Location Independent Networking (LIN) This provides an infrastructure for guest users to use their home network unique credentials to gain authenticated independent network access at visited JANET connected organisations, without any administrative burden or added complexities - both for the user and the local IT staff. The guest user can then use whatever remote access facilities are provided by their own organisation and whatever facilities are offered by the visited organisation. JANET Roaming is part of the eduroam federation ( in which the UK, 22 other European countries, Australia and Taiwan have collaborated to provide international RADIUS proxy authentication facilities. These pages provide setup instructions for guest users using a laptop PC with Windows XP with Service Pack 2. 2 ILS University of Plymouth, 2006
Connect to the wireless eduroam network Note In order to connect to the eduroam network please ensure you have downloaded the latest drivers for your wireless network card Some wireless network adapters may have their own software to manage its configuration. This guide assumes you are using the standard Windows XP with Service Pack 2 wireless setup see 4 below. Now Do This 1) Many laptops have a switch to enable or disable the wireless network adapter. Ensure that the wireless network adapter you are using is enabled. 2) Right click on the wireless connection icon in the system tray (near the clock), and select Open Network Connections. 3) In the Network Connections window, again, right click on the wireless network connection and select Properties. 3
4) In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, click on the Wireless Networks tab and add an entry into the Preferred networks section by clicking the Add button. If eduroam is already listed in the preferred networks list click the Properties button rather than the add button. Note that the use Windows to configure my wireless network settings box is ticked. 5) In the Wireless network properties window Type eduroam for the Network name (SSID) Select WPA as the Network Authentication method Select TKIP as the data encryption method 4 ILS University of Plymouth, 2006
6) Next click on the Authentication tab Select Protected EAP (PEAP) from the drop down list for EAP Type Make sure that all other check boxes are unselected. Click on the Properties button. 7) In the Protected EAP Properties Un-tick the Validate server certificate check box. Select the Enable Fast Reconnect check box. Click on the Configure button. 8) Un-check the Automatically use my Windows logon name and password check box, and click OK. 9) To complete the configuration of the Preferred network click on the OK button until you're back at the Network Connections window. 5
10) Click on this bubble box to enter your username and password 11) Type in your username and password for your home site. Your username will be of the form e.g. Click OK 12) Once you see this bubble box, then you're connected to the eduroam network. Tips Although the Eduroam wireless network is available in many locations, coverage can only be assured in areas where you see the following sign: In order to connect to the eduroam network please ensure you have downloaded the latest drivers for your wireless network card 6 ILS University of Plymouth, 2006
