1 Wireless Registration Instructions Windows XP How to connect to VUWiFi 1. The first step in setting up your wireless card for VUWiFi is to open your Network Connections window. You can find this by going to the Start menu and selecting the Connect To item, then selecting Show all Connections from the submenu. Once you have selected Show all Connections, you should see a dialog similar to the one below. 2. Right-click on your wireless adapter and click properties. A wireless network connection properties dialog will appear. Verify the Show icon in notification area when connected is checked

2 3. Next, click the wireless networks tab. If you do not have a Wireless Networks tab in your properties box, you may need to start the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. Instructions can be found on page 12 in the section called Enabling the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. Make sure Use Windows to configure my wireless networks settings is checked then click Add o If VUWiFi is already in the list, select it and click properties (DO NOT ADD IT AGAIN) 4. In the Network name (SSID) field, type VUWiFi (this is case sensitive). Choose WPA for Network Authentication and AES for Data encryption. Leave the box This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network box unchecked. Then click the Authentication tab at the top.

3 5. On the drop-down menu labeled EAP type, selet Protected EAP (PEAP). Make sure both check boxes below are not checked. Click the Properties button below the drop box to continue. 6. This window allows you to make your connection as secure as possible. Check both Validate Server Certificate and Connect to these servers then type gconnect.vanguard.edu in the box. It is not necessary to select any of the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities. This will be done automatically in a later step. Be sure that Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities is not checked. Next, on the pull-down box labeled Select Authentication Method select Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2). Uncheck Enable Fast Reconnect. Click the Configure button to continue.

4 7. Make sure that Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) is unchecked then click OK. 8. Finally, click on OK in each of the open windows until you come back to your "Network Connections" window. Windows will then attempt to connect to the wireless network. When Windows XP attempts to connect for the first time, you should see a balloon pop up in your taskbar area like the one shown below: 9. When this balloon appears, click on it and you will see the following window: 10. Enter your Vanguard University username and password (do not and leave the Logon domain blank then press OK

5 11. You will be prompted with another balloon so click it and you will receive the following window. 12. Click OK and you have successfully connected to VUWiFi. 13. Open Internet Explorer and wait for connect.vanguard.edu to load 14. Read and Agree to the Acceptable Use Policy

Once finished, close your web browser, turn your wireless card off and then back on (or disconnect and reconnect to VUWiFi) and you are done.

9 25. Click Download Now 26. Click Run and the installer will launch 27. Click Next and then accept the license terms 28. Choose whether or not you want to join the Customer Experience Program

11 31. Let the updates finish. Once finished, it will automatically start a quick scan 32. Let the quick scan finish and then close your web browser 33. Reopen Internet Explorer and start back at step 13

12 Enabling the Wireless Zero Configuration Service 34. First, cancel out of any wireless dialogs you may have open. Next, click on your Start Menu and select Control Panel. Then from your control panel, double-click on administrative Tools. Then double click Services. You will see a dialog similar to the one below: 35. Scroll down to the very bottom of the list and you will find a service labeled Wireless Zero Configuration. Double-click on this service to continue.

13 36. Change the drop-down menu labeled Startup Type to Automatic. Once you have done this, click the Start button to immediately start the service. Click OK to save your settings. 37. Close your services window and go back to step 3
