Airnet-Student Airnet-Student is a new and improved wireless network that is being made available to all Staffordshire University students. Airnet-Student has two key advantages over the current Airnet Wi-Fi network. 1. You do not need to login at the beginning of each session. Once you have logged in for the first time, subsequent connections to Airnet-Student will happen automatically. 2. Airnet-Student uses WPA2 Enterprise security which means that all Wi-Fi traffic is encrypted and therefore even when using insecure websites, passwords or other sensitive data cannot be intercepted by nearby computers. N.B. Macs and mobile devices will cache your user information for subsequent connections to Airnet-Student. If you change your Active Directory (Windows login) password, you will need to submit your password again to Airnet-Student. You should be prompted when your device next joins the network. Failure to do so could result in your account becoming locked out. For further assistance with your device please contact the IT Help Desk. This guide lists the procedures for connecting to Airnet-Student on: Windows 8 Windows 7 Windows XP Apple iphone and ipad Apple Mac Android Blackberry 1
Windows 8 1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon 2. This will reveal a list of available Wi-Fi networks. 3. Click on Airnet-Student and then click Connect. 4. You will now be asked for your University username and password. You are not required to enter student\ in this box. This is a student only network. A University owned device may not ask you for your credentials. 5. You may see the following identity verification message. Click Connect 6. You will then be connected to the network. 2
Windows 7 1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray to reveal a list of available wireless networks. 2. Click on Airnet-Student and then click Connect. 3. You will now be asked for your University username and password. You are not required to enter student\ in this box. This is a student only network. A University owned device may not ask you for your credentials. 4. You may see an identity verification message. Click Connect You should then be connected to Airnet-Student. 3
Windows XP 1. Click on Start Settings Network Connections 2. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection and click Properties. 3. Click on the Wireless Networks tab under Preferred Networks, click Add. 4. Enter Airnet-Student as the Network name (SSID) NB. This is case sensitive. Select WPA2 for Network Authentication. Select AES for Data Encryption. 4
5. On the Authentication tab, select Protected EAP (PEAP) as the EAP, then click Properties. 6. Tick the box Connect to these servers and enter airnet-student.staffs.ac.uk Tick the box for AddTrust External CA Root under Trusted Root Certification Authorities, click OK. 7. Click OK. 8. You should then be connected to Airnet-Student. 5
Apple iphone and ipad 1. Select settings. 2. Select Wi-Fi and choose Airnet-Student 3. Enter your username and password. Example: Note: Student\ is not required. This is a student only network. If you change your password, you must change your credentials on this screen to prevent your account from being locked out. 4. Accept the Airnet-secure (UTN-USERFirst) certificate. 6
Apple Macs 1. Go to Systems Preferences Network. 2. Select Wi-Fi, click on the Network Name dropdown list and select Airnet- Student. 3. Enter your username and password, then click Join. E.g. Student\ is not required as this is a student only network. NB. When you change your password, you must change your credentials on this screen to prevent your account from being locked out. 4. Click continue when asked to verify the certificate and provide your credentials to approve the certificate if prompted. 7
Android Mobile 1. Select Settings > Wi-Fi Select Airnet-Student from the list of available networks. 2. Enter your username and password. This is sometimes displayed as Identity and password. Example: Note: Student\ is not required. This is a student only network. If you change your password, you must change your credentials on this screen to prevent your account from being locked out. 3. You may need to accept a security certificate at this point. If so click confirm or connect. You should now be connected to Airnet- Student. Blackberry Select Manage Connections and then Setup Wi-Fi Network. Cancel (Hot Spot) and then choose Scan for Networks. Select Airnet-Student. Select Disabled Server Certificate Validation. Select Connect. 8
