Instructions for connecting to the LSC-O Secure Wireless Network Wireless computer hot spots are available at various locations around the LSC-O campus. The Academic Center first floor, AHB first and second floor, the Wilson building, the Student Center, and parts of the Green Avenue building are currently accessible. Conditions for Use Connection to the LSC-O Secure Wireless network is contingent on reading and agreeing to the Acceptable Use statements shown on the LSC-O network account activation web page. All conditions and restrictions that apply to the network in general also apply to the LSC-O Secure Wireless network. No peer-to-peer file sharing applications (Kazaa, Bear Share, Bit Torrent, etc.) are allowed. Users must maintain their systems with the latest security updates from Microsoft and keep their systems virus and trojan free. Any violation of these conditions will result in a loss of connection privileges. To connect to these hotspots requires a valid user account on the LSC-O network and a supported operating system. User accounts can be activated through the Web for Students link on the LSCO home page. The currently supported operating systems are Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4, Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or 2 and Windows Vista. Other systems capable of 802.1x network access with PEAP and MSCHAPv2 may also be able to connect but are not supported by the LSC-O Computer Center staff. All systems must have an b or g wireless network adapter.
How to Connect using Windows XP You must complete several configuration steps on your wireless laptop to connect to the network. Start your system and login to the desktop as you normally do. Use a local account on your PC with Administrator privileges to complete the following steps. Navigate to your Network Connections folder. This folder is normally accessed through the system Control Panel. Right click on the wireless network connection and select Properties. Click the Wireless Networks tab and check the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings box. Locate the Preferred networks area lower in the box. You should see a wireless network labeled lsco (Automatic). Select the lsco wireless network and click the properties button. In the lsco properties windows, select the Association tab. Set the Network Authentication type as Open and the Data encryption as WEP. Check the box that says The key is provided for me automatically.
Select the Authentication tab. Check the box labeled Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network. Set the EAP type to Protected EAP (PEAP). The Authenticate as computer and Authenticate as guest boxes should be unchecked. Then click the EAP type properties button. The Validate server certificate box should be unchecked. Set the authentication method to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) then click the Configure button.
For Students: Uncheck the box labeled Automatically use my Windows logon name and password. Click OK on all Windows to return to the desktop. For Staff and Faculty: Leave this box checked to use your LO network account to access the wireless areas. At this point, if you have completed these steps as directed students will see a pop up window near the task bar labeled Wireless network available. Click here to select network credentials or certificate to connect. The exact verbiage may vary with your particular version of Windows and your patch level. Click the window and you should be presented with a network login request box. Enter your LSC-O username and password in the boxes and enter LO as the domain name. Complete authentication may take a minute or two at which time the wireless connection label will be changed to Connected. Internet access should then be available.
Instructions for connection a Windows Vista laptop to the LSCO wireless network. The account used to configure the wireless connection needs administrator privileges on the PC. Start by clicking the Windows start button icon and then the Connect To button. This window opens and if it shows the LSCO wireless network, right click and select Properties. If this window does not show the LSCO network or the properties option is missing, click the link that says Set up a connection or network and add it manually. Once you have it added, go back to this screen, right click and select properties.
This is the properties window. On the Security tab set the Security type to 802.1X, set the Encryption type to WEP. Under Choose a network authentication method choose Protected EAP (PEAP). Once those choices have been made, click the Settings button. Clear all the check boxes on this window. Choose Secured password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) as the Authentication method, then click the Configure button.
Clear the check box on this screen and click the OK button. Click OK on all screens until you return to the Connect to a network window. Select the LSCO wireless network and click the Connect button. You should see a message similar to the one below. Click the box to open the login dialog box Enter you MyLSC-O username and password in the indicated boxes. Enter LO in the Logon domain box. Click OK when ready. If all steps have been met, you will see a message indicating that the LSCO wireless network is now connected.
