1 Maternity Services at Calvary Preparatin f Frmula fr yur Baby Sheet Maternity Unit Fact Pwered Frmula Preparatin Always wash yur hands befre preparing frmula and ensure that frmula is prepared in a clean area Wash bttles, teats, caps and knives careful attentin t washing is essential and sterilise by biling fr 5 minutes r using an apprved sterilising agent Bil fresh water and allw it t cl until lukewarm t cl t a safe temperature, allw the water t sit fr at least 30 minutes. In places with clean water supply which meets Australian standards, ht water urns such as hydrbils are safe t use fr frmula recnstitutin, prvided the supply f very ht water has nt been depleted. 2 Take care t add the crrect number f scps t the water in the bttle d nt add half scps r mre scps than stated in the instructins Keep the scp in the can when nt in use d nt wash the scp as this can intrduce misture int the tin if nt dried adequately Place the teat and cap n the bttle and shake it until the pwder disslves Test the temperature f the milk with a few drps n the inside f yur wrist it shuld feel just warm, but cl is better than t ht Feed infant any frmula left at the end f the feed must be discarded A feed shuld take n lnger than 1 hur any frmula that has been at rm temperature fr lnger than 1 hur shuld be discarded Frmula that has been at rm temperature fr less than 1 hur may be stred in a refrigeratr fr up t 24 hurs (in a sterile cntainer) discard any refrigerated feed that has nt been used within 24 hurs When a cntainer f frmula is finished, thrw away the scp with the cntainer, t ensure that the crrect scp is used next time Preparing Feeds In Advance Ideally nly ne bttle f frmula shuld be prepared at a time If frmula needs t be prepared in advance (e.g. fr a babysitter r t take t a child care centre) it must be refrigerated (at 5 C r belw) and used within 24 hurs Alternatively, prepared sterilised bttles f biled water may be refrigerated and used as required, first warming by standing bttle in a cntainer f warm water and then adding frmula Refrigerated prepared frmula shuld be warmed by standing the bttle in a cntainer f warm water befre feeding the infant Using a micrwave t heat infant frmula is nt recmmended as heating can ccur unevenly and burn the infant s muth The next date f review fr this dcument is January 2019 Endrsed Wmen and Infants Management Cmmittee February Mary Ptter Circuit, BRUCE, ACT, 2617 P:

4 Transprting Feeds Prepare the feed and put in the refrigeratr Ensure feed is cld befre transprting D nt remve feed frm the refrigeratr until immediately befre transprting Transprt feed in a cl bag with ice packs Use feeds transprted in a cl bag within 2 hurs, as cl bags d nt always keep fds adequately chilled Re-warm at the destinatin (fr n mre than 15 minutes) If the destinatin is reached within 2 hurs, feeds transprted in a cl bag can be placed in a refrigeratr and held fr up t 24 hurs frm the time f preparatin There are a number f special cntainers available designed t carry single serves f infant frmula. It is als recmmended t take ne r mre separate sterilised bttles f cled biled water at the crrect vlume, s the frmula can be prepared at the destinatin. Alternatively, single-serve sachets f infant frmula pwder are available. Manufacturer s instructins shuld always be checked befre use Methds f Sterilisatin f Baby Feeding Equipment Biling Wash bttles, teats and caps in ht sapy water with a bttle/ teat brush befre sterilisatin Place utensils, including bttles, teats and caps in a large saucepan n the back burner f the stve Cver utensils with water, making sure t eliminate all air bubbles frm the bttle Bring water t the bil and bil fr 5 minutes. Turn ff d nt allw it t bil dry Allw the equipment t cl in the saucepan until it is hand ht and then remve it be very careful if children are present Stre equipment that is nt being used straight away in a clean cntainer in the fridge Bil all equipment within 24 hurs f use Sterilising Using Chemicals Fllw the manufacturer s instructins carefully when making up the slutin t ensure the crrect dilutin Discard the slutin after 24 hurs, thrughly scrub the cntainer and equipment in warm water with detergent and make up a new slutin Make sure all equipment is made f plastic r glass; metal crrdes when left in chemical sterilant Cmpletely submerge everything, making sure there are n air bubbles, and leave it in the slutin fr at least the recmmended time Equipment can be left in the slutin until it is needed The next date f review fr this dcument is January 2019 Endrsed Wmen and Infants Management Cmmittee February Mary Ptter Circuit, BRUCE, ACT, 2617 P:
