2 Egg Flat Experiment Materials: graduated cylinders, water bwls and tablespns eggs (1 per grup) cntainer f salt (nn idized aka Ksher Salt) Preparatin: While I prvide the eggs, I usually ask the students t bring the salt. 2 cntainers shuld be enugh fr ne class. Lessn: Questin: Hw much salt will be needed t increase the density f the water t a pint at which the egg will have a lwer density and flat? Observatins / Inferences: Eggs dn t flat. Adding mass (salt) t the water will increase its density. Objects with less density than water (r a slutin) will flat. Hypthesis: Students recrd their hypthesis. Prcedures: Remve egg frm slutin. Cmpletely disslve a tablespn f salt int the water. Carefully put the egg back int the slutin. (bserve) Repeat until the egg flats. 4 Nrman Mitchell As a child, I always had truble flating in a swimming pl but was able t flat easily in the cean. Knwing that the cean is salt water and the pl is fresh water, I realized that smething abut saltwater makes it easier t flat. As a 5 th grade teacher, it was my jb t teach abut density and buyancy. I learned that water had a greater density and that explained why I had better buyancy in the cean! Nw my curisity kicked in and I began t wnder hw much salt is needed t cause different bjects t flat. I think it will take teaspns f salt t raise the density f the fresh water enugh t allw the egg t flat. I tested my hypthesis using the fllwing prcedures. First I gt a fresh egg, a large glass jar, 24 unces f tap water, a pund f salt and a teaspn. I tried t flat the egg in the fresh water and fund that it sank. I remved the egg and disslved a teaspn f salt int the water. The egg was placed back int the water and I bserved that it didn t flat. I cntinued fllwing the same prcedure until the egg flated after adding the eighth teaspn f salt. Yu can review my data by lking at the chart n the right. Water Flat? 5 Nrman Mitchell One prblem that I fund was that the water became cludy and it was hard t see the egg. I discvered that I used idized salt instead f nnidized salt. It turns ut that the idine in the salt causes the water t clud. When this experiment is repeated, nn-idized salt shuld be used t avid cluding f the water. My hypthesis was nt prven since it tk abut half as much salt t flat the egg as I had hypthesized. This experiment shwed me that as the density f the water is increased, heavier bjects culd be flated. This cnclusin leads me t think that cean vessels can be mre greatly laded than thse that transprt gds n rivers r lakes. Als, I nw wnder abut the relatinship between the mass f the egg and the mass f the salt added t the water. I wuld like t measure each mass t see if there is a mathematical cnnectin. If there is a cnnectin, wuld using anther substance (such as sugar) with an equal mass t the egg allw it t flat?
