3 FACEBOOK TOP NEWSPAPERS 2013 Research Abstract. Facebook and newspapers: the final challenge. New York Times and Los Angeles Times on top. Social presence rise fast Mr. Zuckerberg s announcement about making Facebook the fresh newspaper, followed by the introduction of Hashtags and reader mobile applications that produced the instant boost of the company profit and stocks (an increase of 30% in the same day the company announced the financial performance), is setting the publishers dealing with the next challenge. If Facebook dares to become a digital daily newspaper then, the printed ones have no choice: they have to become a daily social media. Facebook aims to gain growing amount of newspapers readers by increasing advertising, so newspapers have to become more social. They have to open and share their contents to the global audience, trying to promise the readers their quarter-hour of fame like Andy Warhol predicted in the destiny of every human being. Considering this high competitive scenario, Innova et Bella, a strategic consulting company, publishes the annual ranking of the best newspapers on Facebook 2013, for the fourth consecutive year. I&B ranking considers the most popular national newspapers in Europe and US, the rating is specific and has been assigned analyzing newspapers strategic relation best practices. For each country I&B considers 10 among the largest circulated newspapers, for a final research sample of 60 headings. Here is the list of the considered countries: Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Great Britain and United States. Overall I&B research, updated on 30 June 2013, shows 19.6 million Facebook likers compared to a circulation of more than 28.1 million copies. The average growth of Facebook likers, about 7 million, compared to 12.6 million in 2012 (4.7 million in 2011), faces a constant decrease of the average circulation that in 2013 looses 1.5 million copies from 2012, when the total circulation was 29.7 million copies (30.7 million in 2011). Once more, Italy is proving, to be the more social country showing more likers than readers. The ten Italian headings took into consideration show total likers exceeding 4.7 million, while the circulation is of over 1.9 million copies. For each copy circulating in Italy, we count 2.5 likers, 1.0 in France, 1.0 in Spain, 0.7 in the US, 0.38 in Great Britain and only 0.25 in Germany. Overall, Innova et Bella Research in 2013, certifies the trend towards a strong and steady development of relation strategies of all the main competitors, but with a clear difference: overseas, the editorial companies seem to have already found the way to make profits from their social media strategies, while in Europe, editorial companies are still focused on the uncertain profitability of the traditional business, producing a delay in the development of efficient social media strategies.
4 In 2013 newspapers are oriented towards the active co-production of social content: the sharing of comments, suggestions and opinions is no more only matter of likers discussions, the newspaper is now present, promotes and invites the audience, contributes with contents, shows its presence to moderate, answering and liking users comments. Most of the analyzed headings, show a consistent quality increase in content of images, more and more cut for the social news and perfectly integrated into the multimedia context. Researching and developing a deep participation with the audience, means for the newspaper, being able to improve the relational offer with the editorial board, the columnists and authors that are considered as flagship products, designed to the social media audience. The Ranking. At the top of Innova et Bella international ranking, two US newspapers, scoring the rating AAA: New York Times and Los Angeles Times; they represent the excellent benchmark for the global press area. The New York Times is on top, it was at the second place in It shows rich contents and sections dedicated to different subjects; bloggers, columnists and personalities offer the audience the opportunity to participate, discuss and comment on various themes. Finally, New York Times offers a wide range of high quality content of images and videos that make its Facebook page graceful and fluent to the reader. The New York Times shows, in 2013, a rise of almost 1 million likers: 3.1 million facing the 2.2 million in Second place fort the Los Angeles Times, scoring the rate AAA. The newspaper has climbed to the top from the 24 th position of Los Angeles Times best practices are the quality rise, the several subjects and dedicated sections, the great integration with other media and the use of live chats and artistic photo contests for better interact with users. Follow, the Washington Post with rating AA. With its strong and steady social reading App, the WP does not betray the expectations and gains the third place of the international ranking. The newspaper counts 654 thousand likers in 2013, this amount overtakes the average hard copies circulation of about 180 thousand users. Fourth position and rating AA for the British newspaper: The Guardian; the newspaper gains four positions from The Guardian shows a great interaction with likers and offers several Q&A meetings, this means the newspaper considers the importance of a deep and straight relationship with its supporters. The Guardian counts over 659 thousand likers in 2013, they were about 400 thousand in A French newspaper in fifth position: Le Parisien that gives the start to the A rating series. Le Parisien is very accurate and intense in interacting with users, it offers live blogs, social reading, games and photo contests. Over 800 thousand likers in 2013, they were 512 thousand in Follow, at the sixth place the British Financial Times, with rating A. Well integrated with other social media, FT constantly proposes discussions and debate occasions for its likers, with the massive presence of columnists and authors posts. About 600 thousand FT likers, in 2013; 381 thousand in 2012.
5 In seventh position a German newspaper: Bild, with rating A. Bild keeps on with the high quality standards of posts and content of images, showing an increase in thematic sections. In 2013, Build counts more than 929 thousand likers, they were 776 thousand in Eight place for the French Le Figaro, with rating A. Le Figaro offers participation and involvement with social reading and the wide range of thematic sections, high quality content of images and a number or infographics. Le Figaro doubles its likers in 2013, they are over 600 thousand. A Spanish newspaper in ninth position: El País, scoring rating A. Scaling the ranking from the 18 th place in 2012, El País shows a good integration with other social media, specially Twitter and Youtube; events and several contests make its Facebook page well shaped. 254 thousand likers for El País, in 2013, they were 142 thousand in The tenth position of the international ranking is taken by the French newspaper Libération, coming from the 14 th position of last year. Integration with other social media and Journal Numérique are the main best practices of Libération. We count 146 thousand likers in 2013, 88 thousand in In Italy, the two leading newspapers are La Stampa, near to reach the goal of 100 thousand likers and Corriere della Sera, with 828 thousand likers, both score the rating A in the international ranking. Third place for Il Fatto Quotidiano and fourth place for Repubblica. We point out the global record of il Fatto Quotidiano that shows 20 Facebook likers (in total are 956 thousand in 2013) for each paper copy. Repubblica, with 1 million 119 thousand likers confirms, in 2013, the quantitative leadership in Italy.

A specific rating has been assigned considering newspapers strategic relation best practices. For the fourth year, the research sample of the annual I&B ranking considers the most popular national newspapers in Europe and US: Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, and United States. Overall the sample of 60 headings considered by Innova et Bella research, updated on 30th June 2013, shows a presence of over 19.6 million Facebook likers and a growth of 7 million, compared to the 12.6 million likers of I&B 2012 research. Besides, the average total circulation of 2013 is 28.1 million copies and shows a decrease of 1.5 million, compared to the circulation of 29.7 million copies reported in 2012 by I&B research.
7 BEST PRACTICES ANALYSIS The annual ranking of Innova et Bella is based on the assignment of a social rating and the analysis of the following 12 strategic relation best practices: 1. Stakeholders management. 2. Development of audience participation and involvement in contents and sharing. 3. Involvement of all the main stakeholders (readers, journalists, staff, companies, institutions, employees). 4. Adoption of Apps to develop the mobile access to products and services. 5. Offering the users a direct connection with journalists and authors, like 1to1 dialogues and customized relation spaces for every single columnist. 6. Listening the social audience, users opinions and interests; analyzing their participation data in order to feed them back. 7. Giving the audience the opportunity to contribute to the editorial agenda by asking and taking into account the most active users suggestions. 8. Feeding contents of images and videos: photos and videos that empower dialogues and sharing among likers, users, editorial board. 9. Enrichment of the like value by offering the audience customized, long-term relations, based on a deep interest. 10. Integration of the editorial strategies with multiple channels: paper copies, web, blogs, apps and other social networking: Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, Google+ 11. Development of themes and collateral social pages related to various subjects and different audience targets. 12. Public enhancement of the relation with the audience. For each newspaper, Innova et Bella has calculated every best relation practice by assigning a value from 10 to 50 (10: the analyzed practice is absent or weak compared to the sector standards, 30: the analyzed practice is in line with the sector standards, 50: the analyzed practice is above standard). The Social Rating is the weighted sum of all the best relation practices values. We notice that the quantitative parameters (practice n. 1 and practice n. 2) do not represent the main evaluation data, having an estimated relevance under 25% of the total evaluation.

11 QUANTITATIVE DATA Innova et Bella has analyzed Facebook relation strategies of a sample of 60 daily headings among the 10 main circulated newspapers in: Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, and United States. Overall I&B research updated on 30 June 2013 shows a presence of more than 19.6 million Facebook likers and a growth of 7 million, compared to the 12.6 million likers of 2012 I&B research. Besides, the average total circulation, in 2013, of 28.1 million copies, shows a decrease of 1.5 million, compared to the circulation of 29.7 million copies we find in 2012 I&B research. In 2013, the phenomenon has been observed also in Spain and France. In Italy, in 2013, we count an impressive 4.7 million total Facebook likers, compared to 1.9 million circulating copies waning from 2.2 million copies in In the US we see a rise in Facebook likers: 6 million in 2013 with an increase of 2.4 million likers compared to We also report a sensible rise of US newspapers circulation that counts 9.2 million copies in 2013, instead of 9 million of In France there are 3 million Facebook likers in 2013, and, for the first time, they overtake the circulated copies: 2.8 million, a slight decrease from 2012 where we counted 3.1 million copies. Great Britain shows a sensible rise in Facebook likers, 1.3 million in 2013, and a circulation decrease: from 8.1 million copies in 2012, to 7.6 million copies in 2013.
12 In Spain we count 1.7 million Facebook likers in 2013 (they were 900 thousand in 2012) that overtake circulated copies: 1.4 million, compared to the 1.7 million in Germany shows 1.3 million Facebook likers, rising from 0.9 million in 2012, with a circulation of 5 million copies, it was 5.6 million in In sum, for each paper copy, in Italy there are, in 2013, 2.5 Facebook likers, versus 1.0 in Spain, 1.0 in France, 0.7 in the US, 0.38 in GB, and only 0.25 in Germany. By considering the international sample, 5 Italian newspapers are still among the top 10 positions in a ratio of likers / circulated copies.
