12 Welcome Positio of the keyboard ad mouse Place the keyboard directly i frot of you (1). Keep your forearms horizotal, with your wrists i a eutral, comfortable positio (2) while usig the keyboard or mouse ot at a agle. Let your upper arms hag aturally at your sides. Use the palm rest oly briefly, to relax your wrists whe you are ot typig. Place the mouse at the same level as the keyboard ad use your whole arm to move it. Positio ad viewig agle of the moitor Set the display at a comfortable viewig distace (3). Make sure the display scree is at eye level or slightly lower. Use the display s tiltig feature, if available, to fid the best positio. You ca reduce eye-strai ad muscle-fatigue by adjustig the tilt of the display to the proper positio. Remember to adjust the brightess settig of the display. If you are usig a CRT moitor, make sure that the refresh rate is at a optimal level, that is, at least 75Hz. Furiture ad posture Sit i a chair with good back support (4). Adjust the level of the chair so your feet are flat o the floor. A footrest may make you more comfortable. Sit i a relaxed, upright posture ad avoid slouchig forward or leaig too far backwards. Lightig Choose a locatio where widows ad lights do ot create glare or reflectio o the display. 14 Usig your VAIO computer Shuttig dow your computer safely It is importat that you shut dow your computer properly so you do ot lose usaved data. To shut dow your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Tur off ay peripherals coected to your computer. 2 Click the Start butto. 3 Click Tur Off Computer. The Tur off computer widow appears. 4 Click Tur Off. 5 Respod to ay prompts warig you to save documets or to cosider other users ad wait for your computer to tur off automatically. 15 Usig your VAIO computer Usig the keyboard Your computer is delivered with a VAIO keyboard. The features are much the same a stadard keyboard, plus some additioal fuctios. For iformatio o the stadard keys ad shortcuts, please go to the Widows Help ad Support Ceter. The VAIO-Lik website ( also cotais glossary iformatio to help you use the keyboard. 14 Idicators Light O Off um Lock Caps Lock Scroll Lock Usig the shortcut keys Turs o whe the umber keys i the umeric keypad are active. Turs o whe the letters appear i uppercase as you type. The <Shift> key lowers the case of typed letters whe Caps Lock is o. Turs o whe the scree scrolls differetly (ot all applicatios support this fuctio). Turs off whe the alphaumeric character keys i the keypad area are active. Turs off whe the letters appear i lowercase as you type (uless you hold dow the <Shift> key). Turs off whe the iformatio moves across the display ormally. Depedig o the keyboard delivered with your model, you may be able to use shortcut keys to start your favourite software, without havig to click the shortcut ico o the desktop. Use a <S> Key simply by pressig it. If you wat to, you ca use VAIO Actio Setup to chage the fuctios of the <S> Keys. All the buttos are reprogrammable.

17 Usig your VAIO computer Usig the mouse The VAIO wheel mouse allows you to cotrol the cursor i a umber of ways. You ca poit to, select, drag ad scroll objects o the scree usig the buttos ad the wheel. PCV-RZ models oly: Your computer is delivered with a VAIO PS/2 optical mouse, which uses a light-emittig diode (LED) istead of a ball. Avoid usig the mouse o a piece of glass or other trasparet material, as this ca iterfere with smooth cursor movemet o the scree. The mouse has the followig fuctios: 16 Butto Fuctio 1 Left butto Click or double-click the left butto to select items. To drag ad drop items, hold the left butto dow while slidig the mouse, the release the butto to drop the item. 2 Cetral wheel Tur the cetral wheel to scroll up or dow a page. Press the wheel oce to lock the scroll actio ad cotrol the movemet by movig the etire mouse (the scroll fuctio is available oly with applicatios that support it). 3 Right butto Press the right butto oce to display a cotext-sesitive shortcut meu (ot always a active fuctio). You ca adjust the mouse poiter speed ad other fuctios uder Mouse Properties. To display Mouse Properties, go to the Cotrol Pael, select Priters ad Other Hardware, the select Mouse.

18 Usig your VAIO computer Settig up the mouse for left-haded users To set your mouse up for left-haded users, proceed as follows: 1 Go to Start, select Cotrol Pael, the click the Priters ad Other Hardware optio. 2 Click the mouse ico. The Mouse Properties dialog box appears. 3 I the Buttos tab, select the optio butto ext to Switch primary ad secodary buttos. 4 Click OK. The ew mouse settigs are ow i place. 17

19 Usig your VAIO computer Usig the disc drives Your computer is equipped with two separate optical drives. Please see the prited Specificatios sheet to see which drives your model has. For istallig software ad usig the VAIO Recovery Disc it is recommeded that you use the upper drive. A DVD±RW drive reads data from ad writes data oto DVD ad CD. A DVD-ROM drive reads data from DVDs ad CDs. A CD-RW drive reads data from ad writes to CDs. A CD-ROM drive reads data from CDs. 18 To isert a disc, proceed as follows: 1 Tur o the computer. 2 Press the appropriate eject butto to ope the drive. The tray slides out. 3 Place a disc i the tray with the label side facig upwards. Make sure the disc is secure i the cetre of the tray. 4 Close the tray by pushig it getly. 20 Usig your VAIO computer Readig ad writig CDs ad DVDs To achieve optimum performace whe writig data o to disc (also called burig ), follow these recommedatios: Oly use circular discs. Do ot use discs with ay other shape (star, heart, card, etc.), as this may damage the disc drive. Do ot strike or shake the computer while writig data to a disc. For optimal writig speed, deactivate the screesaver before writig data to a disc. Memory-residet disc utilities may cause ustable operatio or data loss. Deactivate these utilities before writig data to a disc. Whe usig a software applicatio to bur discs, make sure you exit ad close all other applicatios. ever touch the surface of the disc. Figerprits ad dust o the surface of a disc may cause writig errors. ever put stickers o discs. This will affect the use of the disc irreparably. 19

21 Usig your VAIO computer Playig DVDs To achieve optimum performace whe playig DVDs, you should follow these recommedatios: Close all ope applicatios before playig a DVD movie. You ca play DVDs with the software WiDVD for VAIO. Do ot switch power savig modes while playig a DVD. Do ot use built-i utility applicatios to speed up the access of discs, because they may cause the system to become ustable. Make sure that the screesaver is deactivated. Regio codes idicators are labelled o the DVDs to idicate i which regio ad o what type of player you ca play the disc. Uless a 2 (Europe belogs to regio 2) or ALL (this meas that you ca play this DVD everywhere i the world) is labelled o your DVD disc or o the packagig, you caot play the disc o this player. Do ot try to chage the regio code settigs of the DVD drive. Ay difficulties caused by chagig the regio code settigs of the DVD drive are out of warraty. 20 * ot applicable for all models. 22 Usig your VAIO computer Usig two screes while watchig a DVD film To use the two screes ad chage the DVD playback settigs, proceed as follows: 1 Coect your TV to the computer as described i Coectig a TV (page 40). 2 Go to Cotrol Pael. 3 Click Appearace ad Themes ad the Display. The Display Properties dialog box appears. 4 Click the Settigs tab ad click Advaced O the Displays tab, click ext to the TV butto. 6 Make sure is selected. 7 Click OK whe you have fiished.

23 Usig your VAIO computer Usig the floppy disk drive Your VAIO desktop is equipped with a floppy disk drive. Isertig a floppy disk 22 To isert a floppy disk, proceed as follows: 1 Hold the floppy disk with the label side facig up. 2 Getly push the disk ito the floppy disk drive util it clicks ito place. Removig a floppy disk To remove a floppy disk, proceed as follows: 1 Wait util the LED idicator turs off. 2 Press the eject butto ad pull the disk out getly. Do ot press the eject butto whe the LED idicator is tured o. Otherwise, data may be lost.

24 Usig your VAIO computer Troubleshootig floppy disks My floppy disk drive caot write to a floppy disk The floppy disk is write-protected. Disable the write-protect feature or use a floppy disk that is ot write-protected. Check that the disk is properly iserted ito the floppy disk drive. Your disk may be corrupt. Try to isert aother floppy disk. 23 Usig the modem Your VAIO desktop is equipped with a iteral modem. As described i the prited Gettig Started guide, use the sigle RJ-11 jack to coect the supplied modem cable to the phoe lie. Oce you have coected the phoe lie ad registered with a Iteret Service Provider, you ca take advatage of olie services ad the Iteret, to register your computer ad software olie, ad to cotact VAIO-Lik. 25 Usig your VAIO computer Usig power modes The colour of the power idicator light(s) o the mai uit tells you which mode the computer is i. To set the timer for your computer to automatically eter Stadby or Hiberate mode after a certai amout of time, go to Cotrol Pael, click Performace ad Maiteace ad chage the settigs uder Power Schemes.

26 Usig your VAIO computer Usig Stadby mode If you pla to stop usig your computer for a short period of time (ot overight), you ca put it ito Stadby mode istead of turig it off completely. Puttig the computer ito Stadby mode saves eergy ad allows a quick retur to ormal computer use. 25 To activate Stadby mode maually, proceed as follows: 1 Save your work, close all applicatios ad close your Iteret coectio, if applicable. 2 From the Start meu o the Widows taskbar, select Tur Off Computer. 3 Select Stad By. The computer goes ito Stadby mode, idicated by the amber light of the power idicator. To retur to ormal mode, press ay key o the keyboard. You ca leave Widows ruig whe usig Stadby. Whe the computer is i Stadby mode, you caot isert a disc. The computer comes out of Stadby mode quicker tha out of Hiberate mode ad uses more power.

27 Usig your VAIO computer Usig Hiberate mode If you are iterrupted ad eed to leave your computer suddely, you ca put it ito Hiberate mode. This power savig mode saves you the time of shuttig dow i the ormal way. Whe you put your computer ito Hiberate mode: Everythig i the memory is saved to the hard disk. The moitor ad system are tured off. The computer is tured off. The power idicator light turs off. 26 To activate Hiberate mode maually, proceed as follows: 1 Save your work. 2 From the Start meu o the Widows taskbar, select Tur Off Computer. 3 I the Tur Off Computer scree, hold dow the <Shift> key to reveal the Hiberate butto. 4 Click Hiberate. The computer goes ito Hiberate mode, the computer turs off. To retur to ormal mode, quickly press the power butto. Operatio returs to the same state as before. You ca leave Widows ruig whe usig Hiberate. If you press the power butto for more tha six secods, the computer will switch off completely. Whe the computer is i Hiberate mode, you caot isert a disc. Hiberate uses less power tha Stadby ad requires more time.

28 Usig your VAIO computer Usig the media slots As well as the Soy Memory Stick, your VAIO computer also supports other high capacity memory card formats, such as CompactFlash ad SmartMedia. You ca exchage digital data with a umber of compatible products, such as digital cameras, mobile phoes or hadheld devices. Please refer the maual of the idividual devices ad memory cards. Some devices may ot support the formats that this PC uses as stadard. I this case, you may see a message tellig you to format the card. Before you use memory cards other tha Memory Sticks i devices such as a digital camera or audio device, you must format them beforehad o the device which you use to record data. Please be aware that formattig the card will delete all the data o it. The Soy UMH-U HS-XX USB Device ico (or similar) is show i the taskbar whe a USB device is i use. However, it also rus Memory Sticks, CompactFlash cards ad SmartMedia. It is importat that you do ot use this ico to disable these memory cards, as it disables all the slots. If you accidetally remove ay of the cards via this ico, please restart your computer. 27

29 Usig your VAIO computer About Memory Sticks Your VAIO computer is desiged to support the Memory Stick. The Memory Stick is a compact, portable, ad versatile device especially desiged for exchagig ad sharig digital data with compatible products, such as digital cameras, mobile phoes ad CLIÉ hadheld devices. Because it is removable, it ca be used for exteral data storage. Use the flash memory techology to dowload aythig that ca be coverted ito digital data, such as pictures, music, words, souds, movies ad photographs. Please see your prited Specificatios sheet to see which Memory Stick types are compatible with your VAIO ad if there are ay limitatios. 30 Usig your VAIO computer About SmartMedia A SmartMedia card (origially called a solid-state floppy disk card) is a memory card that uses flash memory to store data ad to make it portable amog devices, such as digital cameras, persoal digital assistats (PDAs), ad other hadheld devices. SmartMedia is similar i size to the CompactFlash card (although sigificatly thier), with storage capacities ragig up to 128 MB. This computer supports oly SmartMedia with a capacity of 4 MB to 128 MB uder a voltage power of 3.3 V. The SmartMedia slot is ot for ay use other tha the writig/readig of memory cards. 29 Isertig a memory card To isert a Memory Stick or other memory card, proceed as follows: 1 Locate the appropriate memory card slot o the frot pael of your VAIO. See the prited Specificatios sheet for the exact locatio of the slots. 2 Isert the Memory Stick or other card ito the slot with the arrow side poitig upwards. 3 Make sure the card is secure i the slot. The Memory Stick or card is automatically detected by your system ad appears i the My Computer widow with its ow drive. Always hold memory cards with the arrow poitig i the correct directio whe you isert it ito the slot. To avoid damagig the computer or the memory card, do ot force the card ito the slot if it does ot isert smoothly.

31 Usig your VAIO computer Removig a memory card To remove a Memory Stick or other memory card, proceed as follows: 1 Make sure the idicator light is ot o. 2 Push the Memory Stick or card i to release it, ad the pull it out. You are recommeded to remove the memory card before shuttig dow the computer. If a error message appears whe you remove it, isert the memory card ito the slot agai ad press <Eter>. Wait util the active applicatio fiishes, the remove the memory card. If the message cofirms the ejectio of the card, click OK. Please do ot remove the memory stick whe memory card access lamp is o. Otherwise, the card may ot be detected the ext time it is iserted ito the slot. If the card is removed by mistake ad is subsequetly ot detected, please shut off the power of the computer, wait te secods ad the tur it o agai. 32 Usig your VAIO computer Write-protectig cards Memory Sticks ad SmartMedia are desiged with a erasure prevetio switch to protect valuable data from accidetal erasure or overwritig. Move the tab to the right or left to set or release write-protectio. (O the 128 MB Memory Stick, move the tab up or dow.) Whe the erasure prevetio switch is off, data ca be saved o the memory card. Whe the erasure prevetio switch is o, data ca be read from but ot saved o the memory card. 31 LOCK LOCK LOCK This image does ot apply to the 128 MB Memory Stick, which has a vertical lock. 33 Usig your VAIO computer Usig CompactFlash cards Your VAIO desktop has a CompactFlash slot that supports Type I or Type II cards. CompactFlash is a removable mass storage device. Ad is used to itercoect digital cameras, digital music players, desktop computers, hadheld PCs, persoal commuicators, Palm PCs, digital voice recorders ad photo priters. Its advaced features iclude a high trasfer rate for fast copy/dowload ad a high storage capacity. This slot caot be use aythig except for writig ad readig memory cards or storage device cards. Some CompactFlash cards may require you to disable idle devices durig use. You may ot be able to use some of the card s features with this computer. Troubleshootig memory cards Whe you click Safely remove device (or a similar ico) i the task bar, the computer ca o loger access CompactFlash ad SmartMedia cards. Please restart your computer ad try agai. This also applies to Memory Sticks. Check the write-protect switch o your SmartMedia or Memory Stick. If it is set to o, you caot write or delete data o the card.

35 Usig your VAIO computer PCV-RZ models oly: Usig PC Cards Your VAIO desktop has a PC Card slot o the frot pael that supports Type I or Type II PC Cards. PC Cards allow you to itercoect with portable exteral devices. Isertig a PC Card 34 To isert a PC Card proceed as follows: 1 Ope the bottom pael o the frot of your VAIO. 2 Isert the PC Card getly ito the PC Card slot with the label facig upwards. The PC Card is automatically detected by your system ad the Safely Remove Hardware ico appears i the taskbar. 3 Close the cover flap (uless the PC Card peripheral prevets it). You do ot eed to shut dow your computer whe isertig a PC Card. Do ot force a PC Card ito the slot. It may damage the coector pis. If you have difficulty isertig a PC Card, check that you are isertig the PC Card i the correct directio. See the maual supplied with your PC Card for more iformatio o use. Some PC Cards may require you to disable idle devices whe usig the PC Card. You may ot be able to use some PC Cards or some fuctios of the PC Card with this computer. Make sure you use the most recet software driver provided by the PC Card maufacturer. If the PC Card is operatig abormally, go to Cotrol Pael, Performace ad Maiteace, System, click the Hardware tab, ad the Device Maager. If a! mark appears ext to the PC Card device, remove the software driver ad the reistall it from the istallatio CD that accompaies the PC Card. For some PC Cards, if you alterate betwee ormal power operatio ad Stadby or Hiberate power maagemet modes while the card is iserted, you may fid that a device coected to your system is ot recogised. Reboot your system to correct the problem.

36 Usig your VAIO computer Removig a PC Card Follow the steps below to remove the PC Card while your computer is o. If it is ot removed properly, your system may crash ad usaved data may be lost. If you wat to remove a PC Card whe your computer is off, skip steps 1 to To remove a PC Card, proceed as follows: 1 Close ay applicatios that are usig the PC Card. 2 Double-click the Safely Remove Hardware ico i the taskbar. The Safely Remove Hardware dialog box appears. 3 Select the hardware you wat to uplug ad click Stop. 4 I the Stop a Hardware Device dialog box, select the device, cofirm that it ca be safely removed from the system ad click OK. Some priters do ot fuctio properly without updated drivers. USB priter drivers should be automatically istalled.
