4 Get started with IT The IT Service provides the mai computig ad IT facilities at the Uiversity. After this you ca pick oe up from the Robiso or Walto Libraries. Keep your Smartcard safe A replacemet costs 10 from the Robiso or Walto Library. 2

5 Logi Name & password Before you arrived at Uiversity, you should have received your user ame ad password i a letter or . You ll eed these to log o to campus PCs ad access your Uiversity . User Name Your User Name is the letter b followed by the middle 7 digits of your studet umber (foud o your Smartcard). Problems loggig i? Check you re usig the right password (ot your S3P oe) ad remember it s case-sensitive. If you re still havig problems or you ve forgotte your password, cotact the IT Service Desk o or visit the staffed IT Service Desks i the Old Library or Robiso Library. E.g. If your studet umber is , your user ame will be b Password You re advised to chage your password the first time you log o. Use a miimum of 8 characters ad iclude at least oe UPPERCASE ad oe lowercase letter ad a umber. You ll also be set a separate S3P password; this is oly for the Studet Self Service Portal where you register for your course, pay fees, update persoal details ad select modules. Stay Secure Never tell ayoe your password, eve Uiversity staff. Keep it secret ad chage it regularly

6 , filestore & software Uiversity All studets have a persoal Newcastle Uiversity accout. For iformatio o how to access your o or off campus, or via your smartphoe visit: Remember to check your Uiversity accout regularly. It s used for all official . Your filestore Each studet is give 4GB of persoal filestore (computer disk space) kow as your Home Folder. Whe you use a Uiversity PC your Home Folder is the H: drive or Documets. Lear more at Keep your files safe It s a good idea to always keep a up-to-date copy of your academic work i your Home Folder, i additio to ay copies held o a USB stick or laptop. Access files & software off campus You ca access your files off campus through your web browser usig the Filr service. Visit filr.cl.ac.uk or dowload Novell Filr from your app store. Logi with your Uiversity user ame ad password ad the server: filr.cl.ac.uk The Remote Applicatio Service (RAS) also allows access to your files, Uiversity software ad priters, o matter where you are. Plug your PC ito the etwork poit i your room usig the cable provided. Start your web browser ad go to Follow the olie istructios to coect your PC i Halls. 8 Fid a PC o campus Computer clusters There are over 2,000 IT Service PCs grouped i PC cluster rooms across campus. You may use ay of these PCs if they are ot beig used for teachig. The followig mai clusters have 24hr access: Cluster MG 005, Cookso Buildig Studets Uio, Level 2 NUSU Cetral Old Library Cluster 1.57 Robiso Library (term time) All PCs feature a wide rage of software. Some have additioal specialist software (eg CAD programs). Quick access statios Quick access PC statios ca be foud i may buildig foyers across campus. They allow quick access to the Iteret, so you ca catch up with betwee lectures. Dyslexia ad disability Specialist applicatios are istalled o clusters for use by studets with dyslexia. Magificatio ad scree readig software is available for studets with visual impairmets. Height adjustable workstatios are available i most clusters. Studets ca also borrow small items of assistive techology from our Hardware Loas scheme. For iformatio ad advice visit 6

9 Laptop loas Laptops are available to borrow i the Robiso, Walto ad Law Libraries (for use i the Library oly). You ca register for the scheme at each of the Libraries. 10 Pritig & photocopyig Where ca I prit or copy? Black ad white A4 priters are available i all cluster rooms; larger rooms such as the Old Library Cluster 1.57 also have colour ad A3 priters. Photocopyig is available i the Uiversity Libraries. How much does it cost? Black ad white A4 pritig ad copyig is charged at 4p per side, colour costs 12p per side. Log o to your prit ad copy accout at pritig.cl.ac.uk to buy additioal credits (with a debit or credit card) or to check your fuds. Credits are also available from the Robiso Library Mai Couter, Level 2. Scaig Scaers are available free of charge i most cluster rooms. 8
