Engage yur students in their learning by brainstrming with them the range f Australian sngs and pems they knw abut and encurage them t share their wn experiences and explre with these (they will prbably talk abut Advance Australia Fair, Waltzing Matilda but als encurage them t think mre widely and include ther sngs and pems like I Still Call Australia Hme etc). Discuss with yur students hw these sngs and pems make them feel, the different strategies and symbls they use t evke such respnses and talk abut the task at hand which invlves them reviewing a sng r pem f their chice and perfrming it, r in additin writing their wn sng r pem and perfrming that fr an audience. INVESTIGATE: Find Out Students gather infrmatin frm the Aussie Clue Cracker and ther resurces utlined in this activity, as well as thrugh grup discussin and research. This is small grup r whle class activity. Yu can refer t Wrksheet Advance Australia Fair and analyse the anthem s key messages. Fr instance: Hw d the wrds Australians all wrk t make us feel part f a united Australia? Hw is Australia yung and free? Is all Australia s histry yung? What is meant by glden sil and wealth fr til? Hw is Australia girt by sea? What beauty in Australia might be rich and rare? What is meant by beneath ur radiant Suthern Crss? Wh are thse wh cme acrss the seas and what bundless plains d we share with them?

2 Aussie Clue Cracker Activity The place f sng and petry as icns f what it means t be Australian Identify with yur students the symbls cntained within the natinal anthem and encurage them t find ut mre abut these symbls and what they represent t Australia: Our beaches The Suthern Crss The land Discuss this histry behind the anthem (when it was first prclaimed as Australia s anthem in 1984 and ur fficial anthem prir t this Gd Save the Queen). Yu may chse t undertake a similar analysis with anther sng like Waltzing Matilda written by Banj Patersn and discuss the histry and meanings behind the wrds, such as: What is a swagman, a clibah tree, a billabng, a squatter, tucker and a jlly jumbuck? What is the stry behind the sng and hw might it relate t real histrical events such as the shearers strike f 1894? At this stage, yur students may refine the inquiry questin r fllw a new path that the riginal questin did nt-r culd nt-anticipate. CREATE: Srt Out Yur students rganise the infrmatin they have gathered and synthesise what they have fund. They begin t decide (either individually, in small grups r as a whle class) what the fcus f their perfrmance will be an existing sng r pem, r smething they will create themselves. If yur students decide t create their wn sng r pem, discuss the types f symbls they might include and encurage them t play the Aussie Clue Cracker game t help stimulate their thinking. DISCUSS and Make Cnnectins As yur students cmplete this task, they will be making cnnectins with infrmatin they have gathered and their wn prir knwledge. 2

Thrughut this prcess, encurage yur students t share their new ideas and plans with thers and t cmpare ntes, discuss cnclusins, and share their experiences. When their sng/pem planning has been cmpleted, ask yur students t present their perfrmance t the whle class. EXTEND: Ging further Further explre cncepts, interests and ideas and raise new questins and challenge any assumptins made. REFLECT: Take time with yur students t encurage them t lk back at the questin - Hw des sng and petry help me t understand what it means t be Australian? and encurage them t share what they knw nw.
