1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: School Technical Manager Ref No: MPA54 Campus: Hendon School: Media and Performing Arts Grade: 8 Salary: 41,054-47,200 (Inclusive of Outer London weighting) Period: Permanent Reporting to: Dean of School Reporting to Job holder: School Technical Staff Overall Purpose: The School of Media and Performing Arts requires high calibre technical staff to support developments taking place in the curriculum and research. The technical staff team are crucial to the quality and standards of teaching delivery and knowledge transfer offered by the School. The post-holder will provide professional leadership and manage a complement of multidisciplinary technical staff across the School; ensuring efficient operations of the studios, workshops and facilities in support of excellence at Middlesex. The technical manager will be responsible for the line management of technical staff, and all aspects of Health and Safety practices within the relevant workshops and studios. The post holder will work closely with the School Leadership Team in addition to the other Technical Managers in Art and Design and Science and Technology ensuring that facilities for students, programmes and research interests across the Schools are appropriately identified, resourced and delivered. The Technical Manager will liaise, as required, with central services including estates, facilities and computing services; taking decisions on behalf of the School as appropriate. The technical manager will be part of the senior team within the School, contributing to developments as well as operational matters with specific responsibility for the technical team and their main areas of service. Principal Duties: TECHNICAL Be proactive in ensuring that technical facilities and services are fit for purpose, and raise concerns, in a constructive manner, when solutions are not within the direct control of the technical team. Be responsible for the effective operation of the studios and workshops, including purchasing consumables, maintaining equipment and deploying technical staff. Take responsibility for all aspects of health and safety practices, legal and specialist compliance issues within the studios and workshops, discharging these through delegation to appropriate specialist members of the team where appropriate. Lead and manage complex technical projects within the school, ensure their completion to deadlines and on budget, including liaising with outside agencies where appropriate and other services within the institution. Take an active part in University committees and task groups, and represent the School and University at appropriate external meetings and conferences.

2 Provide specialist advice to the senior leadership team of the School on technical matters Maintain current knowledge of technical innovations in relevant professional and industry practices. RESOURCES Manage the School s technical staff, ensure appraisals take place and that the CPD development needs of all technical staff are appropriately identified, considered and met where possible. Liaise effectively with all academic staff in the School, particularly with Heads of Department, and in conjunction with Technical Coordinators to develop and manage the delivery of technical support. Be responsible for advising and recommending spending needs and for monitoring the allocated technical budgets including the management of capital bids, ensuring best value and appropriate specification. Maintain an inventory of technical equipment and manage procurements as delegated by the Dean. TEACHING/RESEARCH/KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER Provide leadership on the advice given to staff and students on studio/workshop skills, ensuring staff stay up to date with technical developments and provide a high standard of support on the provision of learning support to students Ensure appropriate technical support is available to support research projects, knowledge transfer activity and the development of professional practice, enabling staff where appropriate to play an active part in research teams. OTHER DUTIES The above list is not exclusive or exhaustive. Working as a member of the School Leadership Team, the postholder will be required to work flexibly and co-operatively with other members of the team Other tasks that may be required by the Dean, with particular reference to major University and public events including productions, lectures and talks, performances, exhibitions, student induction, examination invigilation and graduation ceremonies. The post holder is expected to serve as a role model for students and staff in the ways that technical duties are discharged, demonstrating professionalism in all aspects of the role.

3 PERSON SPECIFICATION Selection Criteria Education/Qualifications: Essential: Educated to degree level in a relevant technical subject, or considerable relevant experience in a technical leadership role demonstrating graduate equivalent skills. Desirable: A postgraduate or professional qualification in a relevant technical discipline. Skills, Knowledge and Experience: Thinking and Acting Strategically Essential: Proven ability/experience in a strategic leadership role. Essential: Ability to manage several complex tasks simultaneously. Essential: The ability to advise and inform the School about technology enhancements to support up-to-date academic programmes. Drive for Results Essential: Ability to analyse and recommend practical solutions to complex business and technical problems. Essential: Proven ability and experience to plan complex projects, identifying contingencies and resolving difficulties. Leading and Developing People Essential: Proven ability and experience in managing, developing, leading and motivating technical teams, co-ordinating resources and setting the service standards of the team Essential: Ability to manage the technical development of staff and co-ordinate activities with staff in other departments, such as end users and external suppliers and contractors. Communicating Effectively Essential: Ability to communicate to all staff and end users at all levels, throughout the University. Essential: Excellent verbal and written presentation skills, with the ability to inform non-technical staff about technical issues in a way they can understand. Essential: The ability to interpret complex regulations and distil essential information in order to give a high level of specialist advice through demonstrations and written documents. Change and Customer Satisfaction Essential: An awareness of a broad range of technical areas, and proven ability to engage with technical staff to deliver an effective service for academic staff and high standards of a student experience. Essential: The willingness to adapt and to acquire additional technical skills as may be required to implement and support the School s and University s objectives.

4 Working Collaboratively Essential: Ability and experience of working with others to achieve effective individual and collective outcomes. Essential: Demonstrate experience of influencing, networking and collaborative working skills and the ability to win the support of key colleagues including those at more senior levels. Essential: Ability to develop links and negotiate with external organisations. Other: Essential: A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant Health and Safety legislation and standards. Essential: Previous experience in an HE institution or industry that demonstrates the breadth required for the role. Essential: Familiarity with current technical developments in professional practice in Media and Performing Arts Working conditions: Hours: Leave: Flexibility: 35.5 hours per week for 52 weeks per annum 30 days per annum plus six extra University days taken in conjunction with Bank Holidays.
