1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Senior Lecturer-Psychology Job Reference: SCT135a Campus: Hendon School: Health & Education FTE: 1 Grade: Grade 8 Salary: 42,294 to 48,626 Inclusive of Outer London Weighting Period: Permanent Post Reporting To: Head of Department To work collaboratively within the Department to ensure an effective learning experience for students within the strategic direction of the Department, School and University. This will include: Leadership of curricula development Leading the design of learning, teaching and assessment activities A key role in the supervision of students undertaking research Co-ordination of cross Departmental activities and representation of the Department at School Committees Active participation in research and enterprise activity Principal Duties: Teaching and learning (including scholarly activity) To take a leading role in learning, teaching, assessment and the development of new curricula through:- leading and supporting others to design, develop and evaluate learning, teaching and assessment activities and materials managing the assessment process for specific programmes including coordinating the timing, submission, marking, moderating, external assessment processes, conduct of assessment boards and provision of timely feedback to students as well as ensuring an appropriate range of assessment methods to demonstrate achievement of programme learning outcomes. proposing and leading innovative change in order to meet market demands and BPS (re) accreditation activities adopting creative and innovative uses of teaching resources and supporting others to do likewise adopting and encouraging others to use a reflective approach towards the development of learning, teaching and assessment practices To take a leading role in determining and implementing a programme based approach towards student support and guidance through: creating and communicating to the programme team and students, the purpose of the support available to students at different points in their programme and monitoring the effectiveness of this providing a role model for others in giving support and guidance to students to support their academic progress, referring students to support services as appropriate
2 Research, consultancy and business activity To engage effectively with the Department s Research and Enterprise Strategy through:- - individually or with others, undertaking externally funded research, consultancy and knowledge transfer activities - supervising and supporting others to supervise student research, including doctoral research - publishing in your field of psychology at a level which would make you enterable to REF at international level - developing ideas and finding ways to share and disseminate outputs to the community of practice - undertaking personal research that is of national and international interest - individually or as part of a team successfully attract external research and knowledge transfer funding Contribution to the team/department/university To take a leading role in the management of programmes within the Department of Psychology including:- operational leadership of defined programmes or groups of programmes within the Department coordination of academic administration activities of a defined programme/group of programmes and/or other learning activities such as field trips and placements participation in cross School activities, for example by leading tasks associated with student recruitment, induction, organization of learning activities, involvement in assessment boards, curriculum development participation in and contribution to business proposals for developments in learning teaching, research or enterprise. undertaking personal administrative work including use of University data management and communication systems Other expectations Senior Lecturers will:- maintain and contribute to the contemporary knowledge of their subject area -act as a mentor for other staff as required -undertake continuous professional development and participate in staff development and training activities to update and enhance their knowledge, skills and practice. attend meetings and committees as requested by the Head of Department..-undertake any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Head of Department
3 PERSON SPECIFICATION Post Title: Senior Lecturer Campus: Hendon Grade: Grade 8 Criteria Essential Desirable Selection Criteria : Any area of Psychology compatible with our current research and teaching programmes although candidates with an interest in quantitative methods, Organisational/Business Psychology or Counselling will be particularly welcome to apply. 1. Education / Qualifications: A doctoral degree in Psychology 2. Experience Significant experience in Higher Education or relevant professional experience. Record of achievement in undergraduate, professional or postgraduate teaching, research or income generation Curriculum development experience Course leadership undergraduate, professional or postgraduate level. Track record of scholarly outputs Research recognised to be at national/international level. PGCertHE or equivalent Chartered Psychologist Practitioner Psychologist Experience of research degree supervision. 3. Knowledge and Skills 4. Attitudes and behaviours Breadth of subject specific and pedagogical perspectives of the discipline Ability to participate in developing proposals for teaching. Ability to participate in research and/or enterprise Leadership, Management and organisational skills required at departmental and school level Demonstrate understanding of strategic issues related to student recruitment, quality standards and contemporary discipline specific issues. Willingness to undertake leadership or management role within the School. This may involve leading change Potential to operate in cross- University roles.

POST GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN HIGHER EDUCATION Set out below are the conditions which apply to newly appointed academic staff in relation to the PG Cert Higher Education programme: all staff with a contract of more than two years duration and not less than 0.5 FTE are expected to complete the programme unless exempted at the time of appointment; other fractional staff and part-time hourly-paid staff may enrol on the programme subject to the normal University conditions concerning payment of tuition fees; exemption shall be granted to suitably qualified and experienced staff: ie 3 years full-time or equivalent or PG Cert HE or equivalent normally staff should be expected to successfully complete the PG Cert HE programme within 24 months of enrolling on the programme; normally there will be an upper limit of four years to successfully complete the programme. If problems are identified at 30 months every effort will be made to resolve them at a staff development level; failure to complete the programme within four years may result in delayed grade progression within the University from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer and is likely to be considered negatively when candidates in such a position apply for promotion; staff must be given adequate time to complete the programme within an agreed time framework (ie normally within 24 months); staff will normally be given a time allocation of 0.1 FTE in order to participate in the programme; staff who do not complete the programme successfully within 48 months of enrolment without good cause shall not receive a further increment until they do successfully complete the programme; where exceptional circumstances apply staff should have the right to appeal to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor against a decision to withhold increments pending successful completion of the programme within four years.
7 The following qualifications will be considered for exemption of new teaching staff from undertaking the PGCHE : Either Qualified teacher status: e.g. Registered teaching qualification recognised by SEDA, Bed, PG Cert E or further education qualification. DFEE registered teaching number (school based number) Recognised ENB (NURSING) teaching qualification Or Three years full time teaching experience (subject to review following guidelines from ITLHE) Not Accepted General Adult Education cert. not accepted at present as it does not consider theories of learning, knowledge, needs, skills, and principles of learning. NB Regardless of exemption, all new lecturers to the University MUST go through academic induction. Hours: As a professional contract, there are no set hours stipulated. You will be expected to work hours as are reasonably necessary in order to fulfil your duties and responsibilities. Teaching required will be up to a maximum of 550 hours per academic year and will vary depending on local requirements. Leave: Flexibility: 35 days per annum plus six extra University days taken in conjunction with Bank Holidays. Please note that given the need for flexibility in order to meet the changing requirements of the University, the duties and location of this post and the role of the post-holder may be changed after consultation. No Parking at Hendon campus: There are no parking facilities for new staff joining our Hendon campus, except for Blue Badge holders.
