3 Text Our present building opened in With only one minor renovation/ expansion since then, the Commack Public Library has utilized all available space in the Library to best serve the needs of all of our patrons.

5 The Board adopted the following mission statement in 2005: The Commack Public Library is dedicated to providing the community with quality library service to fulfill the informational, educational, cultural, professional and recreational needs of our patrons of all ages by providing traditional, current and popular materials; knowledgeable reference service; and innovative programs in an open and friendly environment.

6 In order to fulfill our mission and in response to the limited space issues in the children s and young adult departments, issues concerning community room space, handicapped access and building systems, the Commack Public Library Board of Trustees contracted with an architect to conduct a feasibility study for a possible renovation of the Library.

10 The proposed preliminary plan that we will be asking your input on has been developed in response to the demands of the community, changes in library services and inadequate space in the aging building facility.

11 Highlights of the proposed preliminary plans include: A separate children s room dedicated to providing an enriching environment for all of our children and families with special, dedicated spaces for computer use, play space and programs Dedicated areas for senior citizens A larger, dividable community room and meeting room space for Library programs and community groups Creation of a designated young adult area for the teenagers All areas of the Library will become accessible to the handicapped as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Quiet rooms for individual and group study More efficient building systems Technologically flexible building for the 21 st century Additional space for public seating and leisure reading

23 Proposed Library and Our Environment Actively pursue environmentally friendly materials for the renovation of your library inclusive of: New carpeting made from recycled materials Low and no VOC paints Low and no VOC adhesives and solvents Actively pursue energy efficient materials and systems to reduce our need for energy and fossil fuels. Installation of efficient types of insulation Installation of a white roof to reduce solar heat gain and heat island effect to the environment at night New HVAC distribution to create the efficient heating and cooling of the library Installation of LED lighting cutting our watts per square foot to 1/3 of what they are now Furniture and furnishings that employ green practices

A high standard of education helps librarians respond to many issues and trends Libraries provide excellent return on investment, positively impact the local economy, and contribute to neighborhood quality of life
