1 T H E B U C K L E Y S C H O O L Centennial Building Campaign THE BUCKLEY SCHOOL HAS PURSUED EXCELLENCE in educating boys since it was founded in 9. Over the past decade, it has become clear to the Board of Trustees that continuing this tradition of success would require the expansion and improvement of the School s academic facilities. In 0, after a lengthy study of our options, we learned that two adjacent townhouses were available for purchase directly across from the Walsh Building on 7rd Street. We acted quickly on this extraordinary opportunity to acquire space in such close proximity to the School, drawing from our endowment to help purchase the properties, and subsequently made plans to renovate both the new and existing buildings. We believe that the expansive renovations detailed in this brochure will transform the educational experience of our boys. However, the success of this ambitious project depends upon the willingness of every member of our community to give to the best of his or her ability. We ask you to join us in supporting the Centennial Building Campaign at this exciting time in Buckley s one-hundred-year history. On behalf of the Trustees, William von Mueffling 8 President of the Board of Trustees Tom Purcell Campaign Chair
2 ARTS & SCIENCES BUILDING After purchasing the properties at & East 7rd Street in August of 0, Buckley began working with architects to plan the renovations of the new buildings. In accordance with Buckley s Master Plan, the newly acquired townhouses will add more than,000 square feet of interior space to build a dedicated Arts and Sciences Building. This new facility will feature two music rooms, two science labs, two art studios, a crafts room and a technology lab. Construction began in June of 0, and the building is scheduled to open in the fall of 0. MUSIC A larger, acoustically engineered Middle and Upper School music room will enhance ensemble singing and allow for entire divisions to rehearse simultaneously, while also improving collaboration with the drama department. This room will also serve as an event space. SCIENCE Twenty-five- year-old science facilities will be replaced by dedicated Chemistry/Physics and Life Sciences labs. Equipped with stateof-the-art tools, an expanded prep area and increased storage, the new facilities will allow students to pursue more ambitious hands-on experiments. ART Two contiguous art studios will allow for more creative programming, including cross-divisional collaboration and outdoor learning, and provide an improved exhibition space for student work.
3 WALSH BUILDING Relocating the arts and science classrooms across the street will allow Buckley to dramatically renovate more than 56,000 square feet in the Walsh Building. Buckley has outgrown its current facilities, with 5 more boys today than 5 years ago when the north side of the Walsh Building was last renovated. The Middle and Upper School homerooms are inadequate for our students, containing only 7 square feet per boy approximately half of the nationally recommended average. By removing the arts and sciences classrooms, Middle and Upper School homerooms will double in size. Other enhancements will include a newly designed lobby, modernized libraries for the Lower School and the Middle and Upper Schools, an updated auditorium and three dedicated foreign language labs. The building s infrastructure will be upgraded to have a more energyefficient framework, providing a healthier and more comfortable learning environment with modern ventilation and central heating and cooling systems. In addition, the windows, light fixtures, furniture and floors will be replaced in every classroom. LOWER SCHOOL LIBRARY The relocated Lower School library will feature a more flexible reading environment and increased natural light. LOBBY The redesigned lobby will include a brighter and more functional layout with upgraded security.
4 WALSH BUILDING HOMEROOMS Middle and Upper School homerooms will double in size, facilitating small-group learning and one-on-one instruction, as well as full-class instruction, in a versatile teaching environment. FOREIGN LANGUAGE LABS Dedicated foreign language labs will immerse students in their culture of study. 5 MIDDLE and UPPER SCHOOL LIBRARY The library will be divided into spaces for small-group learning and individual study. No longer needed as a primary meeting room, the library will serve exclusively as a modern learning center. 6 AUDITORIUM The auditorium will be renovated to improve its functionality as a multi-use space and to enhance the experience of student performances with advanced sound and lighting systems and tiered seating for improved sightlines. 5 6
