1 Course Syllabus Anatomy and Physiology Ms. Catherine Bulahan School Year Course Description Anatomy and Physiology is a two semester course that examines the basic biological concepts of structure and function of the human body and the mechanisms of maintaining homeostasis within it. Include the study of cells, tissues, skeletal, muscular and nervous system. The senses, endocrine, blood, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems as well as the concepts of pregnancy and birth control are included. Special topics may include the disease processes that affect the human body.one laboratory activity for each unit is incorporated for a better understanding of the concepts. Course Objective Every effort should be made in this modern complicated world to send a well-rounded educated youth out to fill their role in society. The study of biology contributes to the general cultural knowledge of the student. Beyond this, a course in anatomy and physiology meets the needs of a more complete understanding of the basic principles of one s own body and its functions. Those students interested in a profession such as nursing, physical therapy, physical education, pharmacy, and public health are introduced to the concepts upon which further study may possibly lead to a life's vocation. Aims Students will be able to: Recognize body parts and function Demonstrate understanding of body mechanics Demonstrate knowledge of diseases that affects the human body Determine the central ideas or conclusion of a text; summarize complex concepts, processes, or information presented in a text by paraphrasing them in simpler but still accurate terms. Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem: narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate: synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. Conduct laboratory activity and write a laboratory report

2 Expectations The students taking Anatomy and Physiology are expected to arrive to class on time, attend class regularly, participate in all exams, quizzes, and assigned discussions, group presentations, as well as hand in homework on assigned dates.this course requires extensive memorization; therefore, it is recommended that student spend some time each day reviewing and studying the course material. There will be two exam and one project assignment each marking period. These projects will count as exams. The student is expected to make up all missed exams, quizzes, and homework within three class days of their return to school. If the student does not make up the missed work by this time, points will begin to be deducted. As with all courses, students are expected to behave with the highest morals, maturity and respect toward the teacher and fellow students. Assignments 1. For students to be able to determine the central ideas of a text; summarize complex concepts, processes, or information in a text, and paraphrase text (Common Core Standards RST , RST , RST , RTS , RST , RST ), they will use the following strategies: Post-It Summaries Pair and Share Highlight Cause and Effect Graphic Organizers Concept Mapping 2. Students will conduct one laboratory activity and write a laboratory report for every unit. (Common Core Standards RST , RST9-10.6, RST , RST , RST , WHST ) 3. Making Science Relevant with Current Events. Three times a week students should read an article that will help them connect key ideas from current events to classroom learning. (Common Core Standards RST , RST ) 4. Student will write one persuasive essay every semester where they will introduce precise claims; develop claims and counterclaims fairly, use words, phrase, and clause to link the major sections of the text; establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone and provide a concluding statement or section that follows from or supports the argument presented.(common Core Standards WHST a,WHST b,WHST c,WHST d,WHST e, WHST ) 5. Students will submit one formal writing assignment called RAFT for every unit where they will assume a role, audience, format and topic of their choice. (Common Core Standards WHST , WHST b, WHST d, WHST e)

3 6. Students will conduct and present a research on diseases and health procedures. (Common Core Standards WHST ,WHST , WHST ) 7. Students will work on one case study analysis for every unit to deepen and solidify their understanding of anatomical and physiological facts, concepts, and principles.
