1 KING GEORGE V SIXTH FORM COLLEGE JOB DESCRIPTION Course Leader Geology

2 Appointment We are seeking to appoint a committed, highly motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic teacher and Course Leader who is keen to take sole responsibility for the delivery of Geology within the College. The successful candidate will be a Geology/Earth Science graduate with a good honours degree and teaching qualification, having experience of teaching students of 16 to 19 years to A level standard and being fully committed to their subject and to teaching. As sole teacher within the Geology Department you will have responsibility for around 70 students taking AS/A level Geology. The retention rate on these courses is generally very good and a significant number of students develop a keen interest in the subject and apply for HE courses in related fields. The Department enjoys good relations with students across the ability range at A Level and offers a high level of support. The Geology area has a bespoke classroom with adjoining office, store room and a small workroom with facilities for students to work on their coursework, assignments and research. All students follow the WJEC specification, with its strong emphasis on the application of knowledge to assist problem solving in real and hypothetical contexts. The department understands the value of fieldwork and offers a series of day trips in the first year, and a one week residential fieldtrip on the Isle of Arran. We want a Geologist who has the flexibility to teach across the whole specification with the ability to use IT. Above all we want someone who is committed to developing students in this subject. In all, this vacancy offers a real opportunity to make a difference in at an exciting time in the history of the College. Course Leader As a Course Leader, you will be responsible and accountable for the academic performance and progress of all the students undertaking that course. You will be managing all aspects of the students experience of the course. Your key role is to ensure that KGV students have consistent access to high quality provision in this course as measured by the key performance indicators, such as success rates, high grades and value added. 2

3 Specific duties and responsibilities: To have responsibility for the production, implementation and review of the course scheme of work To ensure the course incorporates an appropriate induction, including diagnostic testing to inform on-going individual support for students To keep up-to-date with subject developments To keep up-to-date with developments in learning and teaching and pedagogy, and to ensure the learning and teaching provided on this course provides all students with an appropriate learning experience To work with the College Vice Principal to create an efficient and effective timetable for the course To monitor and actively manage the progress of all students on the course, liaising with the Progress and Learning Managers as appropriate To monitor and actively manage the attendance of all students on the course, liaising with parents or guardians and with Progress and Learning Managers as appropriate To ensure, as required, the accurate and timely reviews of student progress, including the setting of SMART targets Where necessary, to liaise with parents or guardians to ensure all students individual progress To ensure all students have accurate, timely and supportive references for UCAS or other purposes To produce, as required, such reports as are necessary to allow the appropriate and timely review of course performance, such as the annual Self-Assessment Report To contribute, as required by the College Quality Cycle, to Course Reviews To produce, maintain, monitor and review the course level Quality Improvement Plan To ensure staff on the course have appropriate access to CPD To ensure students have access to appropriate enrichment to facilitate their progression on this course, for example, access to trips and visits, enrichment activities and/or other certificated provision, work experience, guest speakers 3

4 To contribute to the annual College Freshers Fair to assist student engagement with the course To work, as necessary, with the College marketing and admissions team, for example on Open Evenings, course discussions and the production of marketing literature To develop appropriate course level links with Partner High Schools To develop appropriate course level links with Higher Education Institutions To liaise with the College exam team to ensure accurate and timely entries for exams and, where appropriate, coursework submissions To ensure course provision and resources meet all relevant Health and Safety requirements To ensure course provision and resources meet all relevant Safeguarding requirements To ensure course provision and resources meet all relevant Equality and Diversity requirements To manage, as efficiently and economically as possible, and account for the course Capitation budget To manage, as efficiently and economically as possible, all resources allocated to the course To ensure all course teaching rooms are maintained as effective teaching spaces, including the reporting of faults or breakages, maintaining and updating displays, including student work, and ensuring an appropriate learning environment 4

5 Duties And Responsibilities Teaching To plan and prepare courses and lessons in the context of the subject s scheme of work to ensure all students are provided with every opportunity to realise their potential and achieve their aspirations and goals To teach, set and mark work appropriate to the needs of students to enable them to achieve the highest possible standards in their agreed learning programme To keep abreast of developments in the relevant subject(s) To assess, record and report the attendance, progress and attainment of individual students through subject and College reviews, parents evenings and progress meetings and references To liaise with other members of staff as relevant, eg, Directors, Progress and Learning Managers, Course Leaders, Progress Coaches, Learning Support staff and Careers staff To liaise with the College exam team to ensure accurate and timely entries for exams and, where appropriate, coursework submissions To ensure students have access to appropriate enrichment to facilitate their progression, for example, access to trips and visits, enrichment activities and/or other certificated provision, work experience, guest speakers To attend and contribute to Staff/Course Meetings/Open Evenings as appropriate To share in and support the discipline, progress and wellbeing of individual students in line with College procedures To encourage full attendance, managing the behaviour and discipline of students in your classes To provide guidance and advice to students on relevant subject matters as appropriate To liaise with Parents, Progress and Learning Managers, Progress Coaches and other relevant College personnel as appropriate To assist with career development as appropriate including providing information and subject specific references for UCAS and job applications To monitor and encourage the involvement of students in a wide variety of extension and enrichment activities 5
