The Wessex Shine Awards recognise excellence in education and training of people to benefit NHS patients and service users in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset and South Wiltshire. The Shine Awards are open to individuals or teams providing healthcare or public health services for NHS patients and service users in NHS trusts, general practice, local authority and independent or private settings including those providing NHS pharmacy, dental and optometry services. All categories are open to people in all professions, staff groups and at all levels. The themes that the judges will be looking for are people and initiatives: where workforce development or education and training have made a difference to the quality of services and patient care and service user experience who uphold the values of the NHS Constitution; demonstrating care, compassion and respect who have worked in partnership across teams, professions and organisations which support the development of cultures of learning. All nominees will receive a Certificate of Congratulations. Finalists will be invited to the Health Education England, Wessex Annual Conference and Shine Awards presentation on Thursday 20 October 2016, Southampton where the winner of each category will be announced. Finalists and commended projects will also be invited to present a poster at the event. You can nominate online via our website at Nominations close on Monday 27 June 2016 so get your nominations in now! Inspiring Educator Outstanding Learner Apprentice of the Year Wonderful Workforce Solution Education and Training Team Hearing the Patient Voice Innovation Champion Chair s Award
1. Inspiring Educator of the Year This award recognises the people who mentor, supervise or train people on the job. Every day inspiring educators help and support the learning of students, trainees, preceptors and colleagues. Inspiring educators not only share best practice and new skills, they are role models for their values and attitudes and use every experience as a learning opportunity. We are looking to honour the supervisors, mentors and tutors who go beyond what is expected of them as an educator. We want to hear your examples of how their extra effort has made a difference to your education and training. If you are a student, trainee or learner and somebody has really gone the extra mile to support, help and inspire you, please do nominate them for this award. 2. Outstanding Learner of the Year This award recognises the importance that the NHS places on the values set out in the NHS Constitution for the current and future NHS workforce. We are looking for all learners: students, trainees and staff undertaking continuing personal and professional development, who have really embraced the opportunities of their education and training programmes. Our outstanding learners shine because through their learning they can demonstrate the importance of good communication, value patient experience and consider patients as partners in their own care. Their energy and enthusiasm for their development is supporting the NHS develop cultures of learning at all levels. This award is open to all students, trainees, and staff who are on programmes leading to formal qualifications. If you are a mentor, educator, trainer or supervisor and a learner has impressed you we want to hear about it.
3. Apprentice of the Year This award is for staff who are recruited as apprentices and for current staff who are studying for apprenticeships. Staff can be in clinical and non-clinical roles. Studying for an apprenticeship can have a really positive impact on somebody personally as well as in their work. We want to shine the light on those development journeys. We are searching for people who have really engaged with the education programme but who have have balanced work, study and home life. We are looking for apprentices who have made a difference and we want to hear about their next steps. Through this award we want to highlight the contribution that apprentices make to the NHS. Apprentices must be completing their course by mid-july Wonderful Workforce Solution of the Year This award recognises the team or individual who has improved patient and service user care through taking a hard look at who does what in a team, unit, ward or practice and applying a workforce solution. This could be through new roles, extending skills, or introducing other new ways of working. The NHS needs to develop workforce models that delivers sustainable skill mix and impacts positively on staff and their career aspirations. However, change can be difficult to implement and hard to quantify. We want to know why and how you did it and what the impact has been even if it is still early days. We want to shine the light on the people or team who have implemented change and made a difference.
5. High Performing Education and Training Team of the Year This award recognises the enormous contribution of people working in and delivering education and training. This team might be a formal team, or a group of people who have come together to deliver a specific initiative. We are seeking a team who through delivering education and training has made a difference to patient and user safety and care, and made a difference for staff. If you are in a team, or know a team, who has devised or delivered education and training in new ways, delivered value for money, constantly looks to improve the quality of education and training programmes, and created a good learning environment, then we want to hear from you. 6. Hearing the Patient Voice in Education and Training 2016 Involving patients, carers, their families and friends in designing and delivering education and training programmes is key to improving quality and ensuring that education and training has the right impact. We want to recognise the team or individual who has made sure that the patient voice is heard in education and training. This award can be for a specific project or initiative, or because there is an ongoing commitment to include patients, clients and carers in education and training. We want to hear how patients and carers have had a positive influence on the education and training of students, trainees and staff. However big or small the involvement and at whatever level.
7. Education and Training Innovation and Improvement Champion of the Year We are looking to recognise an individual or team who has developed an education and training solution to support a service challenge. The innovation or improvement can include the use of technology, simulation or blended learning and be for staff in a clinical or non-clinical setting. This does not have to be an initiative that was invented in Wessex. We know that adapting and adopting an initiative to suit local circumstances is equally commendable. We are looking for measures of success such as enhancing the quality of education and training, motivating and engaging people, the efficient use of resources and ultimately improving patient and service user care. Pilot work is welcome. 8. Chair s Award 2016 Jacqueline Swift DL is the independent Chair, of the Wessex Local Education and Training Board. Jacqueline will make this award to an eye catching or quirky individual, team or project, which perhaps didn t quite fulfil all the criteria to reach the shortlist or number one spot of the other awards, but through education and training, has made an outstanding contribution to improving patient and user experience and care.
Wessex Shine Awards 2016 Guidelines for entries 1. What are the Shine Awards? The Shine Awards recognise excellence in the education and training of staff working in healthcare and public health to benefit NHS patients and service users across Wessex: Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and South Wiltshire. Awards will be made in the following categories: 1. Inspiring Educator of the Year 2. Outstanding Learner of the Year 3. Apprentice of the Year 4. Wonderful Workforce Solution of the Year 5. High Performing Education and Training Team of the Year 6. Hearing the Patient Voice in Education and Training Education and Training Innovation Champion of the Year 8. Chair's Award Who can I nominate? You can nominate any individual or team providing care or services for NHS patients and service users in NHS trusts, general practice, local authority and independent settings across Health Education Wessex including those providing NHS pharmacy, dental and optometry services. You can only nominate individual people for the awards for Inspiring Educator, Outstanding Learner and the "Apprentice of the Year". All other awards may be individuals or teams. Individuals may not nominate themselves, but teams may. Individuals and initiatives are still eligible to enter the Shine Awards, even if they have been shortlisted or won awards in other schemes. 3. What are the criteria? There are broad criteria described in each of the eight categories. However, judges will be seeking individuals or teams in all categories: where workforce development or education and training have made a difference to the quality of services and patient and user care and experience who uphold the values of the NHS Constitution; demonstrating care, compassion and respect who have worked in partnership across teams, professions and organisations which support the development of cultures of learning.
4. What should I put in the nomination? What the project was about and why the initiative was needed? Whether this was entirely new or whether the initiative was adapted and adopted? What the outcome was and how was it measured? (Impact on services, savings in money, time.) What the difference was for patients, users and staff? For individuals: What is their role? What makes them consistently stand out? Are there any specific examples of excellence? 5. Who are the judges? The judges for each category will consist of at least three people to include our Board members and executives from the NHS and our partners organisations. The names of the judges will be published on our website during the summer The exception is the Chair s Award which is at the discretion of Jacqueline Swift DL, Chair of the Wessex Local Education and Training Board. 6. How are the winners announced? The deadline for nominations is Monday 27 June. Finalists and commendations will be contacted by end July/early August and invited to attend the Health Education England, Wessex Annual Conference and Shine Awards Ceremony on 20 October 2016 where the awards will be presented in the afternoon. The posters from finalists and commended projects will be on display throughout the event. 7. What do the winners receive? Winners will be highlighted as areas of excellent practice in education and training in Health Education England. All finalists and poster projects will receive a commendation. All nominations will receive a Certificate of Congratulations. 8. How do I enter? Enter online at by Monday 27 June Any further questions, please contact Jenny Vincent, jenny.vincent@wessex.hee.nhs.uk or phone Good luck!
