1 If you are going into Secondary 5 in June 2015 this is for you!
2 An exciting new opportunity has been created through the Shetland Learning Partnership for Secondary 5 pupils to attend college as part of their school day. Anderson High School and Brae High School are working with NAFC Marine Centre UHI and Shetland College UHI to offer National Certificates with combined SVQ courses in Engineering and Health and Social Care. Each of the courses offered provides the opportunity to gain experience working alongside professionals in engineering and social care during the course of the two year programme. The Shetland Learning Partnership programme is new and offers the opportunity to continue your valuable secondary school education, while gaining professionally recognised qualifications and experience. If you are about to start Secondary 5 in June 2015 and you are interested in studying Engineering or Health and Social Care at college with associated work placements as part of your school work over the next two years, read on... Each of these two new courses will be available as a subject choice replacing two other school subjects. You will study two afternoons a week in college as well as having some time set aside for independent study. You will be matched to an employer appropriate to your course, a work place mentor will be available to you and you will be offered some paid employment during your summer holidays. The courses on offer have been planned with active support from Skills Development Scotland. Both courses reflect Skills Development Scotland s Foundation Modern Apprenticeship programme which is being developed and rolled out across Scotland. Pupil Support Teachers in your own school Mr Peter Moncrieff, Depute Head Teacher, Anderson High School Mr Garry Spence, Depute Head Teacher, Brae High School 1 Shetland Learning Partnership
3 If you are interested, you will need to complete the enclosed application form and return it to your Pupil Support Teacher. The application form is also available at: to print off. You will be asked to complete a choice form for S5 and you will also be asked if you are applying for one of the college courses. The selection process for college courses: Both courses are open to applications from boys and girls. It is expected that selection for these courses will be competitive. You will have the opportunity to speak with key people involved with both courses at the schools Local Opportunities Day on Thursday 26 th February. For Health and Social Care, work experience is an essential part of the course. You may therefore wish to visit some health and social care settings before you apply, to help inform you as to what it may be like to work in that kind of environment before making your final choice. For Engineering your two summer work experiences will be arranged for you with local employers. Your next step will be to complete an application form for your chosen course and return this to your Pupil Support Teacher for Monday 16 th March. If you are selected for interview, this will be held during the week beginning Monday 13 th April. For Health and Social Care you will be invited to attend a group and individual interview at either Brae High School or Anderson High School. Engineering applicants will be invited to an individual interview at Brae High School, Anderson High School or at one of the local employers. School - College Opportunities 2
