ID:939 VET Teacher or Trainer of the Year SHARAN BERRY Entry Overview I am currently the Leading Vocational Teacher in Hairdressing at TAFE Queensland East Coast. As well as leading a team of hairdressing teachers across the region I also provide support to the beauty teachers as well as coordinating the apprentices and trainees to assist in preparing them for the workplace. As a Hairdressing Teacher at TAFE Queensland East Coast, working with apprentices puts me at the forefront of the hairdressing industry/community on a daily basis. A key focus of mine is to develop a positive learning environment by working with team members and representatives of the hairdressing industry community. I work with industry on a weekly basis to ensure that relevant training is customised to meet employer needs while enhancing their workforce and promoting their immediate and future needs. Main formal qualifications: Master of Education (Leadership and Management), University Southern Queensland Master of Training (Human Resources) - Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Further Education and Training, University Southern Queensland Bachelor of Training, University of New England Diploma of Vocational Education and Training Diploma of Training and Assessment Diploma of Salon Management Diploma of Business Administration TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment Certificate IV in Trichology Hairdressing Trade Qualification Ten years ago, I set out to engage with industry on a weekly basis. Each employer receives a phone call or visit and an update on their apprentices training weekly. This became extremely successful and decreased the number of complaints or miscommunications that could occur if there was limited contact. To date, our employers are returning with apprentices, and our past apprentices are now employers who are sending their apprentices to TAFE Queensland East Coast. The conversations I now have with our employers are very candid and we can call on them to assist with validation/moderation processes at any point. Working within the VET training system over the years, I have worked very closely with key figures within Service skills Australia, TAFE Queensland South West, and Queensland VET Development Centre, to assist with current content of the hairdressing National Training package.

hairdressing National Training package. I have worked closely with TAFE Queensland South West on the further development validation/moderation of hairdressing resources which are currently used by TAFE Queensland hairdressing state wide. I have, and continue to write multiple content and assessment for this most recent and past training packages. I am currently involved with the current development of the new TAFE Queensland online resource development project, of which I am part of the team developing resources online for TAFE Queensland hairdressing. Sharing teaching practices and leadership are clearly demonstrated through my initial development of online resources for hairdressing at TAFE Queensland East Coast. I have worked closely with the online learning team to develop content resources and assessments for Hairdressings interactive teaching and learning instrument where by students learn through a collaborative online practice. Students access hyperlinked sites u-tube videos/interactive virtual reality walk through hairdressing salon. Students, industry representatives and other TAFE s across Queensland have accessed and utilized this innovative training system with great appraisal. A percentage of my resource tool will be utilized in the new TAFE Queensland hairdressing online resources development. Each year I engage with the local schools/universities and industry to gather feedback on current trends within our industry and jobs on a state and local vocation. I have won the nomination for an outstanding achievement award within TAFE Queensland East Coast, and have been nominated for the past four years for outstanding achievement/customer service/innovation and teaching excellence. Criterion 1: Commitment to excellence and innovation To prepare apprentices and trainees for the workplace I revised and updated an online virtual salon application. Working with IT specialists we were able to make the application interactive so the learner could see what the working experience would be before they entered a salon. Feedback from employees show strong support for the virtual application as it had contributed to apprentices being work ready. The success of this has resulted in it being rolled out state wide with the expectation of a nation rollout to follow; other faculties are now reviewing the possibility of this application being adapted for their industry. I have contributed to the development of assessment materials for the National Training Package in Hairdressing and am an active participant in the State Validation process.

I regularly represent TAFE at district schools career days, delivering presentations and speaking with students and parents. I also maintain an active participation in industry as a salon owner and regular invited judge at State and National Hairdressing competitions. I am a member of the Hairdressing Council and International Hairdressing Society, participate in the Hair Expo in Brisbane and Sydney annually and contribute to industry workshops. This allows me to keep abreast of hair fashion trends and techniques and workplace issues such as workplace ergonomics relating to equipment and furniture in salons and how this impacts on employee safety. To ensure lessons are engaging and relevant, I developed online courses accessible anytime with hyperlinks to video resources including YouTube presentations. This is attractive to young learners and the revised content has allowed new styling techniques and contemporary work practices to be included. Peer Assisted Study Groups (PASG) was a university research subject which I undertook for my Master of Education, and implemented into my teaching program. This works in conjunction with fulltime students who don t have the luxury of everyday salon work. I strive to give students the ability to learn, understand and explore both the function and application of hairdressing and customer service, within a guided peer situation. By applying case studies to real-life examples and problems and lead them to understand and appreciate the relevance of client interaction and the application of key indicators, a discipline that traditionally has been regarded as difficult to inspire and motivate students to learn. Our industry representatives have found our fulltime students are more capable now of interactive team involvement due to the PASG program. Criterion 2: Teaching methods With over 16 years experience as a hairdressing teacher, I make learning as accessible, industry relevant and enjoyable as possible to allow each learner to gain the skills needed to fulfil their workplace duties in a safe, productive and creative way. As an industry practitioner I am aware of trends and customer expectations which I incorporate into lessons. In our inclusive society this also means adapting lessons for people with special needs such as disabilities. Recently I successfully mentored a hearing impaired learner through a Certificate III in Hairdressing. This was achieved by adapting lessons and using support applications such as: - extra tutoring sessions, engaging industry to support this student with additional vocational placements. - re-modelled the virtual salon to support needs with subtitles and learning guide/book references. - used a peer style learning

environment to support with theory sessions. At TAFE Queensland East Coast I am a member of the Validation team for the hairdressing industry. I plan a schedule to work with industry representatives who review course assessments and examination results, gaining feedback on individual performances and general learning outcomes of the program against industry needs. This is passed on to the learner in individual meetings to prepare them for the workplace. During this process we gain feedback from the learners. Each year we run internal online feedback surveys to gain learner satisfaction with programs and our service delivery. The environment which hairdressing is based around at TAFE Queensland East Coast is our simulated working salon, where we have a fully functioning hairdressing salon, and at one end a classroom-based theory room. I have developed a structured program so that the students have flexibility to undertake their theory sessions, and then go straight onto pre-practical work on Manikins. This gives them the confidence to step into the simulated salon environment to work on our Clientele. On weekly basis I engage with industry representatives who attend our Monday class session to ensure all our students have a clear vision of industry expectations and standards. This is a process which I have built over the years at TAFE Queensland East Coast. I have worked closely with our industry representatives who are now on a rotating roster system, and give their time freely, to visit TAFE. This has ensured that our Certificate III full time students have skills which make them employable at the completion of their 12 month course. Criterion 3: Why you would be a good ambassador As a Vocational Teacher I maintain currency of my teaching skills through ongoing academic training, industry professional development programs and workshops. These include product sponsored workshops detailing new styling and fashion trends, facilitating workshops and participating in the annual Hair Expos in Sydney and Brisbane. I am also an active member of the Hairdressing Council and International Hairdressing Society contributing to the coordination of competitions. The standard of my work has consistently been recognised with nominations for Teaching and Achievement awards within TAFE since 2010; and by my students being nominated for the Queensland Training Awards and WorldSkills Competition. I am also a volunteer coordinator and scrutineer for these events. I hold supportive references from my colleagues at TAFE Queensland East Coast and other TAFE campuses, industry

Queensland East Coast and other TAFE campuses, industry suppliers and employers (see attached). My contributions to learning and teaching has been recognised, in particular the online programs and e-learning applications I have contributed to the development and validation of such as the modified Virtual Salon. As a Leading Vocational Teacher I provide leadership to a small team of teachers, mentoring their professional development and coaching them as required. I guide them on complex matters and sensitive issues such as learners with disabilities, domestic dysfunction or disadvantage. Always maintain an ethical and empathetic approach to handling the matter; in compliance with the Code of Conduct and legislation regarding privacy, discrimination and the obligations of international learners. I am an active member of the community and share my knowledge through community work groups such as promoting the trade in schools and the Try a Trade program. Another example is the look and learn session plan I developed to engage industry with student s development, similar to the big brother mentoring format; salons/employers mentor students for 12 months at TAFE. This has often resulted in job offers at the completion of studies. This was a distinct area under hairdressing audit (2013) that was highly commended. The auditor suggested to Business improvement that the team should be nominated for a Training Award. Audit Hi Grant, Thought I would pass on the auditor s comments following yesterday s audit of the lovely hairdressing team. This team should be nominated for a training award! I have audited many teams in my time and I would say they are one of the best in Australia. This is definitely a good news story that needs to be shared. Regards Jennifer Criterion 4: Links with industry or community I actively participate in program and learning tool development in regional TAFE joint working groups, such as for the development and validation of new resources, and Service Skills Australia and the Queensland VET Development Centre on the Hairdressing National Training package. For the review and revision of online resources I worked with the Leading Vocational Teacher

resources I worked with the Leading Vocational Teacher Hairdressing from the TAFE Queensland South West, these are currently used by TAFE Queensland hairdressing state wide. For this I wrote multiple content packages and assessments. In developing online applications I have worked closely with the epod team to create resources and assessments for an interactive teaching and learning tool where by learners can learn through a collaborative online training practice. They access hyperlinked sites u-tube videos/interactive virtual reality walk through hairdressing salon. Industry representatives and other TAFE s across Queensland have accessed and utilized this innovative training system with great appraisal. Maintaining my involvement with industry, I have been strongly involved in hairdressing competitions throughout the Queensland and nationally. These include TAFE Queensland South West Hairdressing, Judge for the International Hairdressing Society, Scrutineer at WorldSkills Australia and a regional competition organiser and judge. I am currently organising Hairdressing World Skills Regional Competition, I am constantly engaging with industry representatives on a state and national level. I take great pride in the success of my students, in recent years these have included: - 3 students finalists (and place winners) for the region of Cooloola for Hairdressing WorldSkills. - 1 student a finalist at National Hairdressing WorldSkills. - Student winner in 2012 of the Joico Award for Highest Achiever in Queensland - Master Stylist with GHD Award for Best Apprentice Stylist. - IHS (International Hairdressing Society) state competitions 14 highly commended apprentices and fulltime students, nine winners apprentices, 12 runners up-apprentices and fulltime students. - students finalist in the Queensland State Training Awards. Additionally, I have supported our students contributions to the fashion industry through work as Stylists for the Sunshine Coast Fashion Week, Melbourne Fashion Week and Sydney Fashion Week.
