Sarcoma UK is a young, dynamic and innovative charity that strives to raise the profile of a rare type of cancer that few people have heard of, yet has a devastating effect on families. From our creative On the Ball public awareness campaign through to our accredited high quality patient information, we are committed to improving the lives of people diagnosed with this type of cancer. The charity has taken a big step forward in the past few years. We have a committed supporter base; strategies in place for a sustainable growth in income and expenditure; and a very clear focus on what we want to achieve for people affected by sarcoma. In 2016, Sarcoma UK became 10 Downing Street s charity of the year, providing exciting opportunities to raise our profile. Our Board of Trustees is at the heart of the organisation and plays a vital role in determining our growth and our priorities. We are a dedicated, friendly and supportive bunch of volunteers whose diverse professional and personal backgrounds contribute to the success of Sarcoma UK. We are now seeking to appoint a new trustee with a nursing or allied professional background in oncology, ideally with a working knowledge of sarcoma. 3 Trustee (Nurse / Allied Professional) Sarcoma UK is seeking a new trustee with a nursing or allied professional background in oncology, ideally with a working knowledge of sarcoma, to join our Board of Trustees. About Sarcoma UK Sarcoma UK is the only cancer charity in the UK focusing on all types of sarcoma. Our mission is to amplify sarcoma awareness, inspire involvement, and fund groundbreaking research to transform the lives of everyone affected by sarcoma. Since 2011, Sarcoma UK has increased its impact and profile in the sarcoma community and externally in the wider cancer world. We launched our first strategy Transforming the Landscape for Sarcoma in January 2014 setting out our goals and strategic priorities to A key strategic priority is to initiate change to raise awareness of sarcoma and improve standards of treatment and care. We do this through supporting education programmes for sarcoma specialist health professionals to encourage the development of expertise. We work collaboratively with the National Sarcoma Forum (for sarcoma CNS/AHPs) and the British Sarcoma Group. In addition, we raise public awareness and promote greater knowledge of sarcoma amongst GPs to bring about early diagnosis. Our partnership with BMJ Learning provides GPs with free access to the online accredited education module Lumps, Bumps, and Sarcomas with 3300 modules completed successfully in 2015/16. In the same year, we had face-to-face contact with over 500 GPs at five GP education events around the UK, providing them with education resources including our GP Diagnostic Tool. We have also sent out over 300 On the Ball packs to GPs, promoting the red flag symptoms of sarcoma. In February 2016, Sarcoma UK launched a national Support Line, providing expert telephone and support to patients and their families. The charity s staff team includes two sarcoma clinical nurse specialists who deliver this service in addition to providing sarcoma education initiatives to health professionals. Sarcoma UK s income has grown significantly from 198,000 in 2011 to 1.4million in 2016 (forecast). A robust annual business planning process is in place that sets business priorities and budgets, and monitors progress and impact. The day-to-day work of the charity is delivered by a professional staff team led by our Chief Executive. In five years, the team has increased from two people to the 3

4 current team of 13 staff who deliver high quality work across all our charitable objectives. About our Board of Trustees Our dedicated Board of Trustees provides professional skills combined with an interest in sarcoma. A list of our current trustees is available on our website: The role of Sarcoma UK s Board of Trustees is to govern the organisation in line with our vision, aims and charitable objectives and to provide overall strategic direction. Trustees are responsible for ensuring legal and statutory requirements comply with the Charity Commission guidelines. Trustees are also responsible for ensuring Sarcoma UK has a clear shared vision and strategies to achieve this and that management are efficiently carrying out the tasks that have been delegated to them. Our governance processes are well established and set out in our Trustees Handbook. We also have a Code of Conduct, Trustee Indemnity Insurance and Register of Trustee Interests in place. New trustees have a formal induction with the Chief Executive and staff team. The Nominations Sub-committee is responsible for the process of appointing new trustees. Trustee Role Description This role of Trustee (Nurse / Allied Professional) has the general duties and responsibilities of charity trusteeship, whilst bringing professional expertise and interest from working as a nurse or allied professional. This is a voluntary role. However, trustees are entitled to reimbursement of reasonable expenses including travel to meetings at Sarcoma UK s head office in London. Our trustees are based throughout the UK. General duties for all trustees 1. Determine high-level strategy and policy 2. Appoint the Chief Executive and oversee his/her work 3. Manage the governance process of the charity 4. Identify and monitor risk exposure 5. Approve annual plans and budgets 6. Monitor performance of the charity and progress against strategy and business plans 7. Provide insight, wisdom and judgement 8. Take clear decisions 4

5 Duties specific to this role 1. Provide insights and guidance to the charity s strategic work with health professionals, in particular our education work with sarcoma clinical nurse specialists and allied professionals. 2. Promote Sarcoma UK to relevant professional networks. Commitment The average commitment is around eight days a year which includes four Board meetings a year, plus occasional sub-committee meetings. Trustees are also asked to commit time to studying papers, preparing for and attending meetings, following up on specific tasks with other Trustees, liaising with the Chief Executive or staff, and occasionally representing Sarcoma UK externally at events. Board Meeting timetable March Approval of final budget and business plan: approval of research grants June Approval of research grants Sept/October Approval and signing of audited annual report and accounts December Approval of first plans/budget assumptions for business plan Person Specification General A commitment to Sarcoma UK and its objectives An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as a trustee Good independent judgement and strategic vision An ability to work effectively as a team Willingness to be available to the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team on an ad hoc basis Willingness to offer an opinion and make recommendations to the Board An ability to think creatively In addition, we are seeking someone with: Nursing or allied professional background in oncology, ideally with a working knowledge of sarcoma. Enthusiasm and understanding of the role charities play in supporting nurses, allied professionals and patients. 5
