June 2016 Innventia Research Programme
Innventia Research Programme Innventia Research Programme addresses many of the challenges and opportunities that the industry is facing. We believe that multi-client research is of great importance for building new knowledge and creating tools to benefit from these changes. The work carried out within the Research Programme is focused on improving the existing products and processes as well as demonstrating new opportunities with novel materials, chemicals, and products. By working together in precompetitive projects we get leverage by joining forces and better success in public funding. Through the significant changes that have taken place and continue to take place within the industry and the search for new business opportunities, we have now developed a new model for the Innventia Research Programme which meets our customers wishes for greater flexibility, including between multi-client and single-client research. This new model comprises a mandatory precompetetive part and a selection of applications in each programme area. Programme structure The Research Programme comprises several thematic Programme Areas, each addressing problems of great interest to a consortium of Innventia customers. Such a Programme area operates over several years, three years planned. Some important characteristics for the Programme Areas are that they: consist of several Pre-competitive Themes, thereby developing new knowledge or new combinations of knowledge to be used for new technical solutions and applications in Programme area Pre-competitive one or several oriented research projects, that can give results for further development into industrial implementation together with customers in specific client projects We use the term Pre-competitive Research to mark projects and activities of a more generic nature. The Pre-competitive Research is idea and science driven. It is intended to take advantage of scientific opportunities and provide Innventia customers with cutting edge knowledge and expertise that will enhance the capability for future technical development and applications. A B C Every customer participates in the Pre-competitive Research (leveraged by public funding). You have, however, many possibilities to add further value to your investment by participating in one or more oriented projects or initiate projects by your own. We believe that this model gives a high degree of flexibility between pre-competetive research and application oriented research, both area-based and value chain-based. The programme areas and projects are continuously subject to prioritisations, due to on-going changes for the industry that can affect the direction of R&D investments. Participation in Innventia Research Programme means opportunities to influence areas and content. Intellectual Property Rights The Pre-competitive research is partly supported by public funding and therefore the results will be owned and published by Innventia but publication can be delayed if a patent application is preferable to secure Innventias and customers right to continue to do research or use it in applications. All partners in a Programme area will of course have a non-exclusive free right to use the results. The oriented research projects are kept separate from each other as regards Intellectual Property Rights, and other confidentiality matters. Only partners joining the consortium behind a specific oriented research project have access to all its results. The participating companies can choose to co-own a patent if this is applied for during the agreement period.
Programme areas The modern kraft pulp fibre line Lignin value chain Source efficient paper and board making Innventia Research Programme consists of seven so called Programme areas. A Programme area consists of a number of Themes that together with Innventias pre-existing know-how form the basis for a number of oriented research projects. Participation in a programme area means you get information from all themes and the applications you have chosen. Principle: Pre-competetive oriented research Brave new wood biobased materials Nanocellulose processing for various applications Fibre and stock design Boosting packaging performance Design of advanced tissue products Theme 1 Theme 2 Theme Contact Renewable barriers for packaging Programme areas Separate projects For more information about Innventia Research Programme 2015, please contact Anders Pettersson Senior Vice President Research , anders.pettersson@innventia.com Fredrik Rosén Director Market Strategy , fredrik.rosen@innventia.com The modern kraft pulp fibre line We will look into issues such as non-process elements, cellulose-water interaction, connections between pulp critical characteristics and good solubility, fibre properties and sustain ability aspects in order to increase the effectiveness of the pulp mill. More efficient and sustainable kraft pulp mill operations will be required in the near future in order to compete successfully with other material resources. This programme aims at improv ing the process economy and pulp properties, as well as the availability and capacity in the recovery cycle. Contact: Åsa Samuelsson Process chemistry Model mills and LCA Cellulose characterisation, solubility and water interactions Raw material sourcing and characterisation Kraft pulp fibre line Handling of non-process elements High reactivity cellulose
Fibre and stock design Innventia has long experience of characterisation and unique tools for measurement. We will expand these capabilities and develop new knowledge about the use of raw material, stock preparation and property prediction. The CTMP process will also be targeted. We believe that a systematic use and processing of fibre streams and product engineering will lead to more resourceefficient paper and board production. In addition, resourceefficiency will also bring lower energy consumption and environmental impact. Contact: Elisabeth Björk Lignin value chain We will investigate suitable lignin production conditions, lignin product properties and conversion techniques and conditions. The primary target is the development of lowcost carbon fibre for use in structural applications of general performance grade, but the potential in other applications will also be studied. Value-added side-stream products can be of great importance for the industry to stay competitive and viable. The main side stream in the kraft process is black liquor from which lignin can be isolated. Contact: Sverker Danielsson A B C D E Structural carbon fibres Functional lignin applications Optimized strength properties for chemical pulp CTMP strength and bulk Better use of recycled fibres and broke Follow up on external ongoing activities Lignin characterisation Towards green lignin chemistry System analysis and sustainability Source-efficient paper and board making We will exploit the synergies between paper chemistry, paper mechanics and papermaking in order to develop resource- and energy-efficient papermaking processes. This includes the use of nanofibrillated cellulose and the possibilities of sheet stratification. A life cycle assessment performed in the EcoTarget project showed that the most effective way to reduce energy consumption is to reduce the fibre content in the product without deteriorating the production quality. Methods for producing stronger paper and board are therefore needed to facilitate efforts to achieve this. Contact: Magnus Gimåker Chemical additives and fibre modification Retention/formation Web structure Pressing Mechanical properties Bulking Effective use of filler Engineered sheet design Nanocellulose processing for various applications Innventia s pilot facility will be utilised to develop, optimise and demonstrate up-scaled processes for production of nano fibrillated cellulose (NFC). A key focus is to develop charact erisation methods and processes and processing routes to tune and control the NFC properties that meet the demands for subsequent use. There is significant potential for NFC in applications such as nanocomposites, films and laminates, foams and threads, and viscosifiers. This programme aims at making nanocellulose processing both economically viable and technically robust. Contact: Anna Wiberg Pre-treatment Rheology Drying and re-dispersion Characterisation Production Composites Films Filaments and foams Viscosifiers
Brave new wood Bio-based materials Our approach is to take the old forest-based paper components and put them together in new ways aiming at new 3D structures. New material concepts based on wood fibres and, in a longer perspective, also on wood-derived polymers, remains at the centre of our research. This involves, for example, cellulose structures and modification, material identity and sustainability. Industry needs to find new ways to exploit old raw materials. New fibre-based material solutions that allow free shaping could be an interesting possibility and applicable to construction materials or injection moulded products, among other things. Contact: Fredrik Berthold Bio-based binders and polymers Wood pulp fibres modification and applications Complex fibre mixtures Material modelling A Boosting packaging performance Our aim is to develop relevant tools for improved packaging performance and printability, as well as for measuring and predicting perception and handling. We will also explore the possibility of using a printing press to apply barriers, hydrophobic surfaces and optical effects. Predicting packaging performance and consumer experience from physical measurements and material behaviour is of the utmost importance. The benefits are, among other things, materials that perform better in packaging and less waste due to damaged packaging. Contact: Astrid Odeberg Glasenapp B Projects Innventia Research Programme comprises two separate Projects. Each Project is run as a unit and a customer participate in the whole Project. Prioritization is done by the Steering Board before start and continously during the Project. Design of advanced tissue products The most important product properties for many tissue products are strength, absorbency and haptic properties, which together with energy-efficient processing are the areas covered in this project. It will be a combination of laboratory studies, pilot trials and full scale studies. The knowledge aims at better product performance and operation of the tissue machine. Furthermore, examples will be generated on how strength, absorbency and softness can be controlled by placing different materials in different plies and using converting operations of the different plies. Contact: Mattias Drotz Renewable barriers for packaging This project will be devoted to both commercial and novel renewable barrier coatings, including nanofibrillated cellulose and hemicellulose. procedures, food contact safety aspects and the coating composition vs. performance are examples of aspects that will be addressed. The use of plant biopolymers in combination with application technology-driven research allow for a viable solution to replace e.g. aluminium and oil-based plastics as barrier materials. Contact: Peter Rättö Damage mechanics for paperboard Improved printing surfaces Structural mechanics Paper mechanics Printability Printed functionality Psychophysics and perception
