Capitalizing on Maine s Assets using the Finnish Bio-Product Mill Model Adriaan van Heiningen University of Maine Paper Days Orono, April 13 th, 2016
Comparison of Finland and Maine Finland Maine Land (M ha) Forest (M ha) 23 7 Forest (%) Population (million) Ownership - Public (%) - Private (%) People/km Average yearly high temperature ( C) 10 Helsinki 11 Millinocket Maine has many similarities with Finland

Timberland by Stand-Size in Acres, Maine 2013 USDA RESOURCE UPDATE FS-16
Pulp and Paper Crisis in Maine Mill Closures Size 1. Bucksport 2. Old Town 550 t/d 3. Lincoln 450 t/d 4. Millinocket 5. Madison
World Demand of Fiber Products The steady growth in the demand for northern softwood pulp on the global market is the main driver for the investment In Aanekoski Kari Jordan, CEO of Metsä Group, RISI s European CEO of the Year for 2016 Niklas von Weymarn, Metsa, 2015
Global Demand for Softwood Pulp Grows Niklas von Weymarn Metsa, 2015
Demand of Bleached Softwood Market Pulp Niklas von Weymarn, VP, Research, Metsä Fibre Oy June 11, 2015
Metsa Aanekoski Bio-Products Mill Ideal location for wood supply
The Current Aanekoski Mill Production start in 1985 at 1000 MT pulp/day Now 530,000 t/a ECF SW & HW pulps on single line In exemplary condition and using BAT Pulps for folding boxboard, tissue & specialty paper Share of exports: approximately 18 % Personnel: 171; Electricity self-sufficiency: 135 %
The Metsa Bio-Product Mill Concept Very large Kraft mill at the core Focus on energy efficiency No use of fossil fuels Highest quality pulp Net electricity exporter Bio-products with partners Center of cluster of enterprises Niklas von Weymarn, Metsa, 2015
Metsa Aanekoski New Bio-Products Mill Niklas von Weymarn, VP, Research, Metsä Fibre Oy June 11, 2015
Kraft Mill With HERB at the Core 4,000 TPD softwood chip fiber line largest in world Largest recovery boiler and lime kiln in Europe Single line recausticizing plant largest in Europe Dried bark provides gasification gas (87 MW) for lime kiln HERB recovery boiler allows mill to sell 1.4 times more electricity than it needs for own operation 7,200 tds/d HERB provides 260 MW e turbine, so electricity sales of 152 Mw e or 1 TWh per year 7 effect black liquor evaporation plant to 85% ds Modern ECF bleach plant 60,000 tons/y of tall oil
Metsa Aanekoski Mill Investment EUR 1.2 billion investment (40% equity/60% debt) EUR 32 million subsidy from Finnish Government Annual pulp production 1.3 million tonnes (currently 0.5) 800 kt softwood Kraft and 500 kt hardwood Kraft pulp EUR 0.5 billion additional export value About 2,500 jobs (of which 200 at the mill) Main markets: Europe and Asia (China mostly) Start-up: third quarter of 2017 Use of m 3 /y softwood/y m 3 /y hardwood/y (~15% of Finland use) (current mill uses m 3 /y) Bioenergy sales increases Finnish renewable energy ~ 2%
Bio-products for Sale 550 GWh/y solid biofuel, i.e. bark 46,000 t/y tall oil 3,200 t/y turpentine 1,050 GWh/y bio-electricity 640 GWh/y process steam and district heat Methanol Sulfuric acid Share of bioproducts other than pulp will be ~ 20% of the mill s total sales at start up
Competitive Position of Aanekoski Mill Lincoln and OTFF both in lower corner of lower left quadrant! Niklas von Weymarn, VP, Research, Metsä Fibre Oy June 11, 2015
Other Developments Shandong Sun Paper, China s largest privatelyowned paper company, wants to construct a softwood pulp mill in the southern U.S. Greenfield project with capacity of 700,000 MT/y Total investment of $1.36 billion. Break ground in early 2017 Startup in early 2019
New Bio-Products Mill in Maine? New softwood Kraft mill of 2000 MT/d Needs m 3 /y softwood harvest Compares to m 3 /y presently harvested softwood in the state of Maine Would produce 1 TWh/y of electricity for sale which is 9% of entire electricity use in Maine! Would not need natural gas or cheap energy! Needs good railroad connection to deep sea port Location?. At shuttered mill? (Old Town, Lincoln, Millinocket, ----)
Considerations for the Future Packaging: Replacing 1% of oil-based packaging to biopackaging equates to $7 billion in turnover. Plastics: Replacing 1% from fossil plastics to bioplastics is about $4 billion of new biobusiness. Composites: Great potential for nanofibrillated cellulose and lignin in biocomposites Total CO 2 emissions since 1750 now 600 x 10 9 MT of Carbon. To achieve + 2 C by 2100 net global carbon emission can increase only by 400 x 10 9 MT 2016 Paris COP meeting: Carbon neutral by 2050! Petri Vasara, head of biofutures at Pöyry
How can the University of Maine Assist? PDC and FBRI co-develops and test new ideas for pulp/paper and bioproducts production at pilot scale Fundamental and breakthrough research on Kraft pulp yield improvement Improved oxygen delignification Methanol recovery and use in Kraft pulping Kraft lignin for polymers and BTX production Use of fibrillated nanocellulose in biocomposites Use of fibrillated nanocellulose in plastics
New Bioproducts from Lignin Invented by Amit Naskar and Chau Tran,ORNL 2016 ABS is a moldable thermoplastic made from Acrylonitrile, Butadiene and Styrene monomers. Light, strong and tough, used for ventilation pipes, helmets, Lego bricks, etc. Replace styrene by nanoscale lignin dispersed in a nitril rubber matrix to produce a melt that is > 10 times tougher than ABS. The resulting ABL is recyclable, as it can be melted.
