3 Investing in research and innovation sustains economic growth and employment in Europe Globally, companies seek out places where it is most beneficial to operate. Industry s participation in the EU research and innovation framework programmes has been declining. In R&D spending, the EU is lagging behind other economies such as the US, China and Japan. A need to increase innovation funding, streamline the research and innovation funding instruments, and make participation for companies more attractive. 3

5 Stronger performance by polysulfide pulping Metsä Fibre will implement an advanced polysulfide pulping process, thereby introducing an entirely new softwood pulp with improved properties for paper and board manufacturing, particularly suitable for tissue. Due to the high content of hemicellulose in cell walls, these new Botnia Nordic+ pulps will have a higher yield, enhanced flexibility of the fibre, improved tensile strength and tensile development in refining, leading to significant cost savings and enhanced softness of the product. The new pulping process satisfies sustainability criteria with respect to both environmental and resource efficiency considerations. 5

6 Fossil-free pulp production The aim is to have the Metsä Fibre pulp mills free from fossil fuels during normal production operations by replacing oil and natural gas by renewable bio-fuels. The new gasification plant at Joutseno mill produces bioenergy from bark bark is a by-product from pulp production bio-gas replaces natural gas at the lime kiln the plant started in 2012 and was inaugurated last week the mill does not use any fossil fuels during normal operation the first carbon-neutral chemical pulp mill in Finland FACT A pulp mill produces 50% more energy than it needs. The excess of that bioenergy is sold to the surrounding community. 6

7 More cartons with the same weight In 2012, Metsä Board received the Unilever Partner to Win award in sustainability for its development of sustainable lightweight packaging. 9 Favourable innovation environment promotes competitiveness Development and innovations in the forest industry are typically built upon the existing activities and mill integrates. Sustainability is of vital importance and a key competitiveness factor for the forest industry. However, the European business environment and regulatory framework must support the global competitiveness of companies. The Bioeconomy Public Private Partnership is an important tool to support joint innovation projects in the value chain, as well as the demonstration activities and commercialisation. 9
