3 Our customers make our reputation Products with the right quality, a worldclass environmental programme integrated throughout the whole processing chain, three modern and efficient paper mills in which we have made considerable investments and knowledgeable and motivated employees. SCA has produced printing paper for more than eighty years, and over this period we have built up strong, long-term relationships with many of our customers. It is with their help that we have improved our knowhow and developed our products. We are a large and successful group with considerable resources. SCA s management has clearly stated that the group is built on three main business foundations: hygiene products, packaging products and forest products. We have a strong position in the European market for publication papers, which we wish to maintain and develop further. SCA intends to retain its position as a major player in the European paper market. To maintain good and close contact with our customers, SCA has a well-developed network of sales offices in the major European countries. These sales offices are our point of contact with our customers, and they have access to the company s total resources to meet our customers requirements. 4 The right paper for our customers products Everything must be right the style, content, text, images, layout, advertisements and the paper. Co-operation with our customers is the highest priority in our product development. With our customers wishes and requirements as our guiding objective, we have improved our existing products step by step while developing new ones at the same time. Our three paper mills are modern, well-invested and efficient plants. With the production of LWC paper and newsprint at Ortviken, SC paper and GraphoNova at Laakirchen and newsprint at Aylesford, the paper mills complement each other in respect of product range, raw materials base and proximity to customers. Everything must be right the style, content, text, images, layout, advertisements and the paper.

5 Customer oriented development work An important resource in our development work is SCA Graphic Research. Around 100 development staff, the majority of whom are researchers and specialists, work at this well-equipped research centre in Sundsvall. Their tasks are aimed, above all, at improving current products and developing the products of the future. SCA s research centre co-operates closely with the Fibre Science and Communication Network at Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall. We also carry out development work at our three paper mills, where the contact with customers and the in-depth knowledge of our production processes is to be found. 6 Environmental consideration a product quality SCA has over a long period integrated its environmental policy throughout the whole value chain and is able today to demonstrate a unique environmental profile. All SCA s publication paper products are produced from pulp that is bleached without any use of chlorine chemicals (TCF). SCA uses a high percentage of recycled fibres in its paper manufacturing process. Energy usage is based, to a large degree, on biofuels and is primarily a combination of electricity and heating production. Our two-and-a-half million hectares of forest in Northern Sweden provide what is perhaps the best raw material in the world for the manufacture of printing paper fresh wood fibres from mature spruce trees that grow slowly. Control of the raw material base allows us to impose high quality standards. By beginning of the 1980s SCA had already established that sustained biological diversity is the most important environmental goal for responsible forestry practice. Since then SCA has further developed its forestry policy in order to find the best balance between profitable high quality timber production and an ambitious environmental policy. Education and training in ecology, practical nature conservation and ecological landscape planning have been important elements in this work. Participation in the work to develop the first national FSC standard Forest Stewardship Council an international independent organisation for responsible forestry which is supported by the major environmental organisations, was a natural step for SCA. SCA s Swedish forestry practices are FSC-certified and SCA is the only company that can supply large volumes of FSC-certified publication paper. FSCcertified paper is produced in Sweden.

7 Full control of the whole chain. We also take an interest in the future life of the fibre. Aylesford Newsprint, which has one of Europe s most efficient paper machines bases its production on 100 % recycled paper. Also in Laakirchen are we using recycled paper in the production process. 25 % of the paper weight is recycled fibres. Close to the many consumers of paper in Europe, we produce paper from recycled raw materials and thereby contribute to the efficient management of resources. The environment is also a key consideration in the transport of raw materials and finished products. The efficient transport by sea leads to lower discharge levels. The carrying of goods on return journeys further reduces the environmental impact. Environmentally acceptable fuel for ships, lorries and trucks and, above all, good transport planning, help to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Paper that runs smoothly through the printing press and that gives the perfect printed result is at the end of a long chain. It begins with the raw materials and continues through the whole production and distribution process. Unlike many other manufacturers of printing paper, SCA has full control of the whole chain.

8 The right reel of paper in the right place at the right time Efficient logistics should be invisible. The products need only to be there exactly when the customer needs them. Our distribution system is designed to transport our products quickly, reliably and safely to our customers. The distribution system consists of transport by sea, rail and truck. Vessels built especially for the transport of paper sail from Sweden to terminals in Rotterdam and Tilbury near London. Other ships from Sweden call at Lubeck in Germany. Paper from Austria reaches the customers in Western Europe within 24 hours of its manufacture. Efficient logistics should be invisible.

9 At your service We are publication paper specialists. Our paper products must meet the professional customer s growing high-level standards and requirements. In order to better assist our customers, we have a technical customer service team with staff who have extensive and in-depth knowledge of both paper manufacturing and printing. Their task is to be able to prevent or rectify customers problems and to assimilate and convey the customers views on products and service. They can also quickly call on the comprehensive expertise of the paper mills or SCA s research resources. We are publication paper specialists.
