Developing the biobased industry in Norway lines to the future Biorefinery competence building in Norway Industrial Biotech Network - Norway Annual meeting Oslo June 19th 2014 Karin Øyaas, PFI (Paper and Fibre Research Insitute)

PFI in biorefinery competence building in Norway Independent research institute within wood fibre, pulp, paper, new biobased materials and biofuels; Biorefinery processes. Subsidiary of Swedish INNVENTIA AB Innventia AB is an internationally leading R&Dcorporation offering services within the areas pulp, paper, -packaging, biorefining and logistics. Established in 1923 long history of R&D related to processing of / products based on lignocellulosic biomass

PFI focus areas Biorefining and bioenergy Fibre and paper Biocomposites Nanocellulose and carbohydrate polymers

Biorefinery competence building in Norway: Historical perspective ~2000: Mainly R&D for the traditional pulp and paper industries From ~2000: Increasing focus on new biorefinery processes. Project examples: (RCN): Cost-efficient production of renewable liquid biofuel and biochemicals from Scandinavian wood materials; PFI, UoB, TFoU, KTH (S) and industries (Nordic Energy Research): New, innovative pretreatment of Nordic wood for cost-effective fuel-ethanol production; PFI, Matis (IS), Innventia (S), SINTEF, VTT (FI), Lund Univ. (S) and industries (RCN): Nanosized cellulose fibrils as stabilizers of emulsions; PFI, NTNU, SINTEF and industries (RCN): LignoRef - Lignocellulosics as a basis for second generation biofuels and the future biorefinery; PFI, NTNU, SINTEF, UMB, UoB and industries (RCN): PROFIT - Profitable bioenergy and paper production through innovative raw material handling and process integration; PFI, Chalmers Univ. (S) and industries (RCN): Bio-oil refinery project; PFI, Aston University (GB) and industries (EU): Biorefinery Mid-Scandinavia. PFI, Processum (S) and industries.

Biorefinery competence building examples: National roadmap «From biomass to biofuel» Completed 2007 PFI in collaboration with Zero, NoBio, Institute of Transport economics (TØI), SINTEF, NTNU, KanEnergi, Bioforsk, UMB, Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute

Ongoing biorefinery competence building - example; NorBioLab; The Norwegian Biorefinery Laboratory National research infrastructure funded by the Research Council of Norway (37,5 mnok) Managed and coordinated by PFI. Collaborating partners: SINTEF, NTNU and NMBU The laboratory will invest in new, advanced research infrastructure, aiming to: develop new processes and products based on biomass verify new technological processes before further implementation Sigurd Rolland Pettersen 8th NTNU NanoLab Symposium, November 12th 2013

NorBioLab structure

NorBioLab C6 and C6/C5 sugar platform: Autoclave reactor lab with acid proof autoclave units and EX-protection. Rapid heating displacement reaktor. Unit for enzyme production and enzymatic hydrolysis Reactor for high dry matter and high viscosity fermentation with in-situ product separation system Multiple autoclave system for catalyzed reactions in liquid phase Biogas platform: Dolly reactors and anaerobic cabinet to complete previous investments at the biogas laboratory Syngas platform: Entrained Flow (EF) reaktor (gasification) Pyrolysis oil platform: Fast pyrolysis pilot plant for pyrolysis oil production Reactor for production of hybrid bio-fossil fuels through coprocessing in Fluidized Catalytic Cracking (FCC)

Ongoing biorefinery competence building - example; NORCEL; The Norwegian Nanocellulose Technology Platform One of five main research projects in the NANO2021 program (RCN). Managed by Paper and Fibre Research Institute (PFI). Three application areas: Paper and packacing. Petroleum industry (enhanced oil recovery, EOR) Tissue engineering Strong consortium of national and international partners with complementary competences: NTNU, UoB, UoS, Østfold Research, NORUT, Innventia (S) and CNR-ISTEC (It) Sigurd Rolland Pettersen 8th NTNU NanoLab Symposium, November 12th 2013

NORCEL structure WP0: Administration (PFI) WP1: Engineering of nanocellulose and nanocellulose systems (PFI) Controlled morphology Controlled chemistry Controlled assembly of 3D structures WP2: Paper and packaging applications (NTNU) WP3: Petroleum industry applications (UoS) WP4: Cell / tissue scaffold interactions (UoB) WP5: HSE and ELSA (Ostfold research) WP6: Dissemination (PFI)

NORCEL Generic competence is built through the research topic activities. The competence is directed towards applications of increasing complexity.

Ongoing biorefinery competence building - example; The Trefiber (wood fibre) project Established by Innovation Norway Aim: to develop the use of wood fibers/wood fibre components in Norway. The project will mobilize to the development of new products and concepts across value chains and sectors Managed by PFI, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Wood Technology (Treteknisk) and Tretorget

Concluding remarks The forest based industries hold significant competence in wood processing/conversion. This represents fundamental knowledge of vital importance in the development of future lignocellulose based biorefinery processes. In the short term it is essential that existing industries survive, and that competence building ensures a successful transition from the traditional pulp and paper products to new products and processes. Complementary competences have been joined in several ongoing research activities, and should be further developed in order to ensure sound development of the sustainable biorefinery processes of tomorrow.

Value creation is much higher for materials and chemicals than for energy carriers Value creation in petroleum based chemicals are in line with the value added in the fuel industry, but uses only a small fraction of the raw material. Transferred to a biorefinery, the potential for value added is clearly greatest in the production of materials and chemicals Source: Smith, 2008
